Life in Manual
I've said for a long time that if I ever start blogging, my first post would be about life in manual, so here goes.  Things done in manual are way better than things done in automatic.  Allow me to present my findings:
Things better in manual:
Car transmissions - nobody ever said it'd be easy, but once you learn to drive a stick (my dad sort of taught me), driving becomes a form of entertainment.  The only exception, of course, is the Cruis'n USA arcade game.  Never put that on manual mode.  I promise you will come in 8th place.
Cameras - sure, your fancy, expensive, Canon DSLR that you bought but have no idea how to use will take better pictures for you in automatic mode...at first.  Upon learning how to use light and control aperture, shutter speed and ISO, you'll open the door for the most unbelievable, creative photos you've ever imagined.  The key factor in opening that door is that you have to pick the lock.  As  with all things in manual, there's no cheating to get there more quickly - life in manual takes time.
Coffee - a Chemex coffee maker changed my life.  Well, sort of.  I now consume far more coffee than I used to, which gives me terrible headaches when I miss a day.  I also used to drink coffee with milk and sugar to mask the acidity of the automatic drip stuff I was making.  Now, adding cream and sugar to my manually poured, carefully measured and ground coffee would make it taste worse, not better.
Anyway, this is an incomplete list that I plan on adding to as I continue to experience things that are done better manually.  I'll keep you posted.
