For this blog post, I’ve decided to review a movie I haven’t seen before. I decided to look up a few Native American directors and take a look at some of their work. I stumbled upon Native American director Chris Eyre, a director from Portland, Oregon. He has a few films under his belt but for this report I decided to take a look at the one titled, Edge of America. Within the film the cast does feature people of a few different ethnicities such as African Americans, Caucasians, and Native Americans. Even though these races do have a spotlight in this film, most of the cast however features Native Americans. Within this film a few themes that are featured are, change, self-assurance, discipline, and community. In the film an African American basketball coach helps a female basketball team bring change to their losing team and their reservation. He helps the young women on the team build confidence within themselves. He brings these young ladies together and teaches them discipline and how important it is to have it. Within the film there were a few stereotypes that were present. Most of the time if they were present it was to add comedic humor to the film. For example when asked why people on the reservation sometimes hang around a certain area, it was assumed by the black man that, it was because it had sacred meaning to the people. This was added in order to take away the serious tone of the movie. The Native American man responded by saying, “No, it's just some piece of rock.” One of the less comedic stereotypes in the film is how stagnant the reservation is in which the story takes place. The whole ore of the town and how no one ever leaves in itself to me was a stereotype. I would consider this film to be very successful. I liked how the film had a mysterious aspect that kept you guessing the entire movie. This feature made it hard for you to not keep watching. There was also multiple themes within the movie itself that helped it be more relatable to everyone. It was smart for appealing to different types of people so that it can bring in a wider audience of viewers. There were multiple stories lines within the movie that kept you on your toes. The fact that the multiple backstories were all connected, came together and helped everything make sense. I stand by this statement because it won eight awards and had nine nominations total. It won best film at the American Indian Movie Awards and was nominated for best daytime Emmy. On the IMDB website the film was given 7.1 out of 10 as far as ratings go, which to me is a good rating.
