Thomas nodded. “He told me that too, and the why. I get it. It’s not easy…. That’s the spirit you gotta bring along with you. Push the bad memories away, save them but focus on the good.” He told him and smiled as he looked at Sean. Thomas chuckled and shook his head. “Bet it hurt like a bitch though… hey, you’re fresh blood around here, we can always use new people, it gives the people a boost of sorts. You deserve it, Sean.”
Sean gave a small smile. “Is there anything he didn’t tell you....” Again he meant it in a joking manor so he added a chuckle. “I’ve been trying to do that...focus on the good memories...like how dad nearly passed out when Mavy was born. Of course I didn’t witness it in person but Annie telling the story is still hilarious.” He nodded. “It did. I cried but I think mom might have cried more than me. I was like 5 I think. ... I’m excited to learn as much as I can. Nothing is better than hands on experience.”

Thomas had been surprised when Ben had contacted him. They’d briefly worked together in the Navy, so they knew who the other one was. Jack had been telling him about Sean and what he wanted to do, so he had basic info. When he’d arrived at the hospital that morning, he’s spotted the familiar figure sitting on the hood of a car, looking at the hospital. He’d parked in his designated parking spot before he approached Sean.
“Morning, Sean. Jack mentioned a few things that could block your mind a bit.” He spoke with a soft smile as he walked over and leaned on the car next to him. “You know, facing your fears rather than letting them eat at you is a lot better. You push the bad thoughts to the side and see the good and positive things instead. With time the bad things will only live in the back of your head.” He told him. “I know it’s rough to face this place, but really.. the worst things in there? The germs.” He smiled. “You wanna look at some broken legs and arms today, I’m sure. Ligaments out of joint too? Just remember Sean, I’m here to help, if you need to talk, I can listen… I can even find you someone to talk to to help you deal with things.”
Sean wasn’t shocked to hear that his brother had shared with Thomas, he was actually relieved to hear that. “The big one being that I hate this place.” He turned to look at Thomas as he listened to what he said. “My therapist said something similar to that. I haven’t figured out how to master that yet though. But it has been getting easier. Having good memories help.” He chuckled at the mention of gems being the worst thing. The idea of seeing all the things mentioned actually excited him and he nodded. “I’m ready for all of that. I broke my arm once and the bone was actually sticking out. It was neat.” He nodded and slide off the hood of the car. “Thanks. For the offer to talk, and listen. But also for giving me this opportunity. I don’t deserve it but I appreciate it.”

Title: Hospital Day One
Characters: Sean Reagan & Thomas Donovan
Status: In Progress - September 6, 2022
Sean hated this hospital. When his dad had been shot, he recovered here. When his mom died, she had been here. Both Joey and Mavy had been born here too though, and those were happy events, but he still hated the place.
He couldn’t bring himself to go inside. He sat on the hood of Jack’s car, the same car he had learned to drive in and passed his road test in. A car that he was making payments to Jack for. At least that was his plan. His thing here at the hospital was a paid thing but he also picked up another part time job. He glanced at his watch and was relieved to see he still had a lot of time before he had to meet with Thomas. That was another thing he could thank his brother for. Well, Jack and Uncle Ben. They helped set everything up with Thomas. The sound of footsteps approaching on the pavement caused Sean to glance up. Thomas was only a few steps away from him and he gave the older man a smile. “Morning. I’m trying to work up the courage to go inside.” @drthomasdonovan

Ben nodded and gave Sean a smile. “A doctor? So… bound to a hospital or exploring the world as a navy doctor?” He asked curiously. “I considered being a cop, and you know, all the normal boy dream job titles but there was just something about the Navy that I liked and becoming a SEAL was… I got a chance and took it. I don’t regret it, even if it has been hard and at times… I’ve wanted to off myself due to the stress but not it’s worth every second… I’m sure they’re similar and no, I’d not recommend it hungover, or even with breakfast.” He chuckled. “I get that… but your father, grandfather and great-grandfather have all served, they’d understand and it’d be a lot easier to talk to them, wouldn’t it?”
Sean nodded. “Yeah a doctor. I even know what field I want to focus in after Med School. Internal Medicine. I’d much rather see the world while I work to be honest. I never wanted to be a cop. The thought never even crossed my mind. I’ve always wanted to go into something around science.” He listened to Ben talk and was surprised by how open he was being. “You wanted to end your life? Because of what you saw and did? Or...another reason? You don’t actually have to answer that. ... It didn’t help that Grandpa was ready to murder me, I think he added a dozen extra drills to each set.” Sean frowned as Ben brought up the family service. “Uncle Joe did too...I think. But that’s exactly why I don’t want to tell them. They’ll probably try to talk me outta doing it.”

“Now you paint. Let your emotions take control. I’ll leave you to it. Make as many pieces as you feel the need to. Trust me, it will help.”
Sean took the tray and the brush from Annie while she spoke. He waited until he heard the door close behind her before he made any sort of movement. He looked down at the array of colors on the tray and gave a little smile. Annie had included all his favorite darker shades of blues and purples. Colors that they both knew went well together. He still didn’t know how to start. He let Annie’s words resonate in his head. ‘Let your emotions take control’ That should be easy enough. He frowned a moment later and let out a frustrated sigh. He dipped the brush into the darkest shade of blue and brought the brush up to the canvas. He took a deep breath and let the brush touch the canvas and just let his hand direct the brush without thinking about it. He all but zoned out even though he kept enough focus to be sure the paint landed only on the canvas. He wasn’t focused on what was appearing in front of him but he was aware that the frustration he had felt only moments ago was all but gone and he felt calmer.
After a few more minutes Sean put the brush and the tray of paints down on the table beside the easel and finally allowed himself to focus on his work. He was shocked at how dark the canvas was now. It was like it was angry. An emotion, Sean realized, he felt quite often. As he studied the paint strokes he thought about why he was so angry and he switched out the canvas for a fresh one and traded up colors and once again just began to paint.

Ben looked at Sean as he asked his questions. “My parents actually paid for.. I don’t remember if it was 2-3 months before I decided I wanted to join the Navy. A friend of mine actually had joined prior to me and I wanted to do the same thing - he didn’t last long but I ended up loving it and so they paid.” He shrugged and gave Sean a smile. “Yea, there are a ton you can choose between. You can likely ask for a list and they’ll provide it to you” He nodded. “That’s good, bring that along in your backpack and you’re good to go, although, I’ve seen buff men, ‘bodybuilders’ and others that are in normally good shape not managed the first day in training. Besides, your will to help others, your brothers is way more worthy and respected than anything else. Well, maybe try and not be selfish - I’m not saying you are but it’s something you have to keep in mind - try and help others as much as you can.” He looked at Sean in confusion. “Why wouldn’t you tell anyone else? Look, you have my support but… don’t you think it’s wise to at least tell your father?”
“I have money to pay for college. Inheritance from my grandma that’s in an account that her and grandpa created when I was born. Plus I think money from mom, but I don’t know. But I want to become a doctor and Med school is expensive, but I think if I’m committed to the Navy...” Sean explained a little better. “Did you always want to be a Seal or did you just sort of fall into it? I’ve done the NYPD circuit a time or two and I’m sure the two are very similar. By the way, I don’t recommend it if you’re hungover. I think I might have actually died a couple times.” He could find the humor in it all now, days later. “Because everyone will try to talk me out of it and I don’t want that. Dad will be the last person to know if I have my way.”

Ben smiled at Sean and watched Jax leave to find Erin. “It’s fine, he’ll enjoy spending time with Erin anyway. Sure, as much time you need, buddy” He spoke. “They will while you’re on active duty, yes. I’m not entirely sure how that works but I’m sure they do. I believe it’s 100%” He looked at Sean as he spoke and gave him a soft smile. “What’s the Navy like? It’s one of the best workplaces on the planet but getting in is a pain in the ass and more. You’ll want to quit before you even get a day in but hard work and dedication will get you far. I was a terrible teen and young adult - loved to cause trouble around the neighborhood with my friends. When I joined the Navy none of that was accepted, you got punished by exercises and such, you got disciplined and you got to know a new side of yourself. I do recommend you start slowly on your cardio, like yesterday.”
“Yeah Aunt Erin is fun to hang out with. Especially when she’s spilling secrets.” Sean gave a little smirk. He sat forward on the couch as he listened to Ben as he answered his questions. “Did you pay for college yourself then? Or were you not yet in the Navy at the time?” He was storing and processing everything Ben told him. “There are a lot of different career paths you can take within it too right? Hard work and dedication are both things I’m used to between school and all my sports teams. And I run daily and work out at a gym twice a week already. But if you can suggest what else I could focus on I’m all ears. Only two years until I can apply....and I’m going to as soon as I turn 18. I probably won’t tell anyone else about this, except maybe Jack.”

Ben hadn’t minded the quiet dinner, in fact it had been nice to be at a Reagan dinner that wasn’t all about disagreements and arguing, it had been rather peaceful considering. He watched as Jax pulled some records out from the collection and explain as many as he knew. He turned to look at Sean and gave him a smile. “Yea, we’ve been through a few of them already, just looking. A few minutes? Sure.” He looked from Sean over to Jax who just gave a shrug before he continued looking through the records. “Think mom might have some secrets to spoil around the house for you, bud. Go see if she’s interested in spilling them.” He smiled, getting a look from Jax before the boy headed off to find Erin. “What’s up, buddy?” He asked as he turned back to Sean once Jax was gone.
“His best ones are in that box.” Sean pointed to a box still on the shelf behind Jax. He’ll gladly let you borrow any of them.” Sean shrugged. “Maybe a little longer than.” He watched and listened as Ben gave Jax a reason to leave them alone to talk. “He really could have stayed. Does the Navy pay for higher education? Like if I wanted to go to Med School, and enlist would they cover it?” He had been doing some research on the military branches since he had been lectured by Frank and he was very much interested in going that direction once he graduated. And he was leaning heavily towards the Navy. “What is it like?”

Sunday dinner had been a quiet affair with a few empty chairs at the table. Sean wasn’t sure why as no one commented on the absences and he hadn’t felt like asking. It made the after dinner lingering a lot less chaotic and quieter so really it was probably a good thing. He had helped his aunt and Annie with the dishes and now he was on the hunt for Ben. He wanted to ask him some questions and he wanted to do it where no one could just randomly walk in on them. He finally found Ben and Jax downstairs looking through some of grandpa’s records. He sat on one of the couches. “He has some really great music and everything is in excellent condition. Uncle Ben. Do you have a few minutes to talk? I want to ask you some questions but I don’t really want anyone to know we’re talking. Although I trust you Jax if you want to stay.” @benkogan-b1

Mistakes
“Mom, if you were still alive, you would kill me right now.” Sean spoke quietly to the headstone in front of him. He had just spent the last ten minutes clearing the snow off of it and the ground in front of it. He had placed a bouquet of fresh flowers down as well. He glanced to his left at the row of stones that stood for the other members of the family and he made a note to clear them off before he left. He sighed as he reached out to trace the letters of his mom’s name. “I really messed up this time mom. I have to go to court and I’ll definitely end up with community service at least. Grandpa threatened to ship me off to a military style boarding school if I don’t get my shit together. His words even, and you know it’s bad when grandpa swears. He lectured me for over an hour and that was after two hours of an intense workout. I felt like I was dying.” He felt sick just remembering how sick he had been.
“Annie is trying to help me…” Sean paused and mentally kicked himself. “I think…I really think you would like Annie. Be friends with her even if the circumstance of how she came into our lives was different. She doesn’t take dad’s crap at all and she can hold her own at Sunday Dinner.” He frowned and kicked at the small pile of snow at his feet. “But she’s not you and it is still really hard for everyone that you’re not here.” Another pause as Sean gathered the strength to say what was bothering him out loud. “I might have gotten Paige pregnant. I really wish you were here to help me mom.”
