Jake laughs at something Jill says, and the sun shines gold and bronze in his hair.  Chris can’t take his eyes off him.  His mouth is stained sticky red from the snowcone in his hands, and he can’t resist the urge to lean over and kiss the syrup off his lips, tasting artificial strawberry and Jake.  

“What was that for?” Jake asks, his cheeks glowing with a soft pink blush.

“I wanted to,” is all he says, and it earns him a smile, just as bright and soft, just for him.

He kisses him again, tasting sugary-sweet, and they both grin as their lips get stuck together for a second.

“Pombinhos,” Carlos teases them, like he isn’t draped over Jill’s shoulders, his chin resting on the top of her head.  

Jake sticks his tongue out, even more red than his lips or his cheeks, and tucks himself closer.  Storm-blue eyes look up at him through a curtain of blond bangs, and he huffs softly in Chris’ arms.  He’s a riot of colors now, tie-dyed shirt and purple-and-gold shorts and bare feet stained with fallen blackberries from picking them in the woods earlier.

“What are you looking at?” he asks, smiling with those strawberry-red lips.

“Just a pretty rainbow,” Chris says, and kisses him again.

“Dork,” Jake says, his sun-pink cheeks turning brighter when he blushes, but his eyes go from stormclouds to sunny skies as he smiles.

“You said you were raised by a priest,” Quatre says carefully, and Duo can’t help but look away, already regretting his invitation. Already knowing what Quatre found. “Church of the Sacred Heart…the Maxwell Church…is that where you got your name?”

He looks down at his feet. “Yea,” he says flatly, trying to keep his voice flat even as that familiar longing, that grief wells up within him.

“Oh, Duo,” Quatre whispers, reverently, like he can feel his sorrow. It must show on his face. “I’m sor-”

“It is what it is,” he interjects, very much not interested in having this conversation, even though he’d told Quatre he could ask. He wipes a hand across his face. “I don’t want a pity party about it. What’s done is done.”
