There’s a real nice ride through some trails to get to the station. There’s a lot of sun when I get there, waiting for the train back to Portland. I’m camping in a friends garden when I get back to the city so I can feel like the trip is still alive.

I wanted to get a shot of my Motel but don’t think I could have done a better job than the postcards they gave out at the front desk.

I could live in Olympia.

I woke up the next morning to two flats, after riding around the city the night before. Lucky this town has some good bike shops, my rear quick release lever had been sheared right off somewhere on the road. Motel bike workshops are some of the best.

I treated myself to a final meal from the vegan place a block away.

I headed out pretty early from Schafer State Park to avoid the mid day heat, but as I’m getting further from the wilderness of Olympic State Park the trees are getting thinner and the roads are getting busier.
At around 2pm I have to duck out into a park in Mcleary. I waited for an hour for it to cool off, but it kept getting hotter. I think it was around 4:30 before I left the shade of that tree, in that tiny town and even then it was still sweltering. My skin was getting leathery from not having used sunscreen once, and my lips were permanently dry from thirst. My water supply was down to a couple of sips by the time I reached Olympia.
After stopping for Tacos and Horchata in the shadow of a food truck, I headed for the cheapest motel I could find. They had one room left and as soon as I got my bike through the door it was all over. No more thirst, or punishing heat. No more water rations or burning skin. My gear exploded all across the floor and those small things that you’ve been rationing in your kit no longer matter.

One last night of camp tacos were worth the extra weight.

This would be the last night in my hammock before heading into Olympia, where I’d planned to stay at a Motel in the city. Gonna miss falling asleep looking at this beauty.

It was a hot day but I finally feel like I’m getting good touring strength back. I could have ridden for hours, but the shade in Schafer State park was a nice place to end the day.

I’ve never been so hot. Water rations are at an all time high and lay-by shade is at a premium.

I haven’t come across many other cycle tourers on this trip like the last trip I took down the West coast. Maybe it’s too early in the summer. It is really hot.
I met Patrick and Joe back in Elwha when I snagged their camping spot but didn’t think I’d see them again. As I was pulling into Humptulips I heard someone call me name, and saw two bikes leaning against a the Gas station.
They were father and son team, celebrating Joe’s 58th birthday by riding down to coast to Portland. We filled up on gas station coffee together and rode together for a while down a back road to avoid the 101 and it’s logging trucks. They still found us, and I nearly killed them when I pulled over to get a shot of this beheaded dear lying by the side of the road. That’s another reason photographer’s travel solo.
We split up when they headed for Aberdeen and I went for a swim in the river.

You’ve sometimes got to remember to stop and enjoy where you are when you’re cycle touring. It’s easy to forget it’s not all about the miles racked up, and forget to enjoy the places you’re passing through.
The camp vibes at Quinault were so great. Stoked I chose to spend the day here, especially in this relentless sun.

The Washington State Parks have a really hard system to get a camp site. It took me four visits to the Parks and Rec office to get this pass.
