Life hack my well-meaning but ignorant coworker shared with me yesterday: if cupcakes are vegan, that means they have less sugar because sugar CANE apparently isn’t vegan or organic 🙃 😖 🧁
People don’t know what words mean and it bugs me when this dilemma escapes off the internet.
Sugar cane is, in fact, a plant. Which can be organic. If I turn down a cupcake, it’s not because I can’t eat sugar, it’s because I have to do a lot of math to figure out how much medicine [insulin] I need first, and I wasn’t given any numbers with which to do said math, because the small independent vegan? bakery that made the cupcakes didn’t give any nutritional information along with the cupcakes.
Yes, this applies to ALL foods with ANY carbohydrates (including but not limited to sugar), including breads, all fruits, some vegetables, some cheeses, freaking condiments, and a whole lot more.
If you know someone who has type 1 diabetes and you want to make them feel included when you’re doing something that involves food, literally all you have to do is make sure there is accurate nutritional information available (specifically the carbohydrate count per serving size! And, you know, the serving size used to calculate that).
This means store bought brand names are often actually much easier than homemade or bakery-bought foods because everything is standardized and labeled per the FDA. (Also make sure to not then TEAR said label in half right over the carbohydrate info when you open the container. Please and thank you 😊)

^The difference between a torn nutrition label and an intact label.
Foods like fruits are also much easier to calculate for than, say, pizza or your aunt’s famous lasagna, because they contain roughly the same amount of carbs per serving, so the only numbers we’re missing then is the size, which is much easier to guess. If you’ve got a whole entire recipe to guess, especially at BOTH the ingredients used AND the specific amounts, it is much much harder to correctly guess all those numbers.
Sometimes I would rather skip the cupcake than do a surprise math test where the grade is my health.

Sleeping as a diabetic is just: *wakes up low* *eats food and goes back to sleep* wakes up high and gives myself a shot and downs a bottle of water* *goes back to sleep again* *wakes up again because my cgm is about to die because I forgot to charge it* *goes back to sleep* *wakes up to pee bc I downed an entire bottle of water earlier also my blood sugar is high again so I’m giving myself ANOTHER shot* and it just goes on like that forever…

11 January 1922 – insulin was first used in a human to treat diabetes
In January 1922, Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old boy dying from type 1 diabetes, became the first person to receive an injection of insulin. Within 24 hours, Leonard’s dangerously high blood sugar levels dropped, but he developed an abscess at the site of the injection and still had high levels of ketones.
Collip worked day and night on purifying the extract even further, and Leonard was given a second injection on 23 January 1922. This time it was a complete success and Leonard’s blood sugar levels become near-normal, with no obvious side effects. For the first time in history, type 1 diabetes was not a death sentence.

I spend at least a quarter of every day stressed out about what new part of my body is going to start falling apart because I can’t manage my diabetes perfectly. Every bad blood sugar reading is another nail in my coffin and reinforces the intrusive thoughts I have about myself. Are my teeth going to fall out? Am I going to go blind? The guilt and anxiety I feel is paralyzing and I don’t know how to overcome it.

Help a disabled trans guy afford an insulin pump:
Hi my name is Björn (pronounced beyourn), and I need help with affording an insulin pump.
I'm type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed 6 years ago and it has taken me that long to get approved for a pump because of fatphobia and ableism I have faced with the doctors I was seeing previously.
An insulin pump would not only be a great improvement to my health but also would vastly cut down on my insulin prices as I would be switching from Kwik Pens back to vials.
I probably don't have to tell most people how expensive it is to be diabetic in the US, and insulin pumps are very high up on the list of expensive assistive devices. Currently as it stands, the pump I was approved for is being covered at 80% by my insurance, which leaves me at owing a little under $900 and this is $900 I cannot reasonably spend.
You can support me at: venmo @ bjornkram paypal @ paypal.me/bjornkram kofi @ Ko-fi.com/bjornkram
Any and all support is greatly appreciated, if you cannot afford to help I'd appreciate it if you could reblog this so others can see it!
If you donate send me an ask and I'll doodle you a little bear doing something fun, you can request something or leave it up to me!
