Entry 2: Guest lecture
As There were no seminars that week, I thought I’d a write a bite about the lecture covered in the second week. The lecture was about the “Future of Media Industries: Industry Insight”. We were joined by the head of Media training at the Mentor Communications Consultancy, Dave Mason. He gave us a guest talk about the potential futures of the global media industries. He introduced a number of key ideas that I found to be potentially very helpful for my proposal later. He talked about the impacts of global media on real life situations. I found this to be very interesting information also useful for my proposal. After the lecture we were asked to look into a few questions related to the lecture and a reading of Dwayne Winseck’s book about “The Political Economies of Media: The Transformation of the Global Media Industries.” The questions included: How might digital technologies be used to shape the future of the media industries?, How do you see the consumption practices for media evolving in the future?, Where do you anticipate the production of media developing next? I found these to be quite challenging to investigate as it involved researching about technological advancements in the field of media, which I knew little about.

Media Blog Entry 1: First Seminar
First Seminar
I found that today’s first media cultures and concepts seminar really helped me understand the basis structure on which this module is built. I was introduced and familiarized with the term globalization and what it represented. We were then informed about the first assignment, which was to write a project proposal, related to the following blog posts. I found that the blog posts would be a good way of gathering information I could later use when writing the proposal. During the rest of the seminar, we went through a list of new terminology. We were asked to identify the term cultural homogenisation’ and think of examples. On the web, cultural homogenization was described as an aspect of cultural globalization and refers to the reduction in cultural diversity through the popularization of cultural symbols, physical objects, customs, ideas and values. In my words, I defined it as something that occurs naturally when the society emphasizes or de-emphasizes aspects of your identity. Examples of homogenization would be the fast food industry. Other definitions included, standardisation and top down globalisation, which luckily I already knew about thanks to a article I read a few weeks ago. We were also asked to perform group discussion on the topics of global commercialised culture and universal culture. All in all, a good way to understand what the first term would cover.
