I've already expressed my adoration of both designs of Telltale's Joker. But I just want to break down why they're so appealing to me.

In the game, John Doe goes through huge changes in his life that are expressed in his wardrobe. But the most dramatic change is at the last episode of the series. When he fully transforms into Joker.

Brian Matyas is a concept designer who had worked on both Batman Telltale games. He had posted some of his works on Artstation and Instagram.

[John Doe]

As the game progresses in the story, players will probably take note of how John's wardrobe goes through the most changes compared to everyone else. But the key thing to note that stayed consistent in each episode was his half-fast way of buttoning/tucking-in his shirt and how progressively colorful his outfit was getting.

[Villain Joker]

There's a lot of things to break down about this outfit. First, Brian Matyas stated that Villain Joker was molded primarily by Bruce Wayne. Not Batman. Joker's business tie and fancy suit's purpose was to emulate Bruce's public persona of being a CEO (or, more simply, a person with power). Interestingly enough, Joker's gloves are basically the same kinds that Harley wears in game, as if it were to say now they're equals in their relationship (but obviously they're not). I've heard from others that gloves are symbolic of secrets, which describes how Joker has kept some information hidden from Harley.

The Villain Joker design is probably the most colorful one. His bright green hair, the 80 carpet patterns in his navy suit, the pop of hot pink, and the most disgusting looking dress-shirt I've ever seen. Jack Nicholas' influence isn't lost on me. This outfit screams bold and confident, and most importantly, free.

There are still elements of John Doe. The poorly done tucking and buttoning of Joker's shirt are there. But strangely enough, the strain of hair in front of his head is flipped. John’s was located on the right side while Joker purposely flipped it to the left. And that's not the only thing that's flipped. John's outfit consisted of a purple vest inside and a green/teal shirt outside. Now the pattern is switched with Joker, green shirt inside and dark navy suit outside. Subtle differences like this are led to believe that Joker wants Bruce Wayne to know that he's completely different from John Doe.

The last thing to talk about is his shaved eyebrow. I have no idea why he would do that. People have said it's because he wanted to express how much damage Bruce did to him. Personally, I thought it was like ‘girls making bad hair decisions after a breakup’ thing.

Although his design encompasses both Bruce Wayne and Harley Quinn's impact on his life. It's more leaning into Bruce.

[Vigilante Joker]

There's something about this design that always makes me feel so heartbroken. Not because it's a bad design but because of how much it reminds me how John had faith that if he lived up to Batman's standards that he would be able to maintain their friendship.

Brian Matyas said that he wanted the Vigilante Joker's silhouette to emulate Batman's. It's shown by how his hair and shoulders are curved to a point. Joker's makeup is a lot more gothic and is a lot more menacing than Villain's makeup. It also almost resembles the mask that typically Robin would wear.

Again, there are still elements of John Doe present here. But they are less noticeable than Villain's. Joker's left arm has stitches, (John has been seen wearing a vest that has a different color button then the rest) his shirt's collar isn't properly folded correctly, (John is practically never seen to maintain his dress-shirt collar properly) and he still keeps his vest unlike Villain route. (Although like Villain, there is a color swap with the green shirt and purple vest)

But one thing that jumps out to me is how dull in vibrate color he is compared to Villain Joker's or even John Doe's fourth episode outfit. I had to brighten up my screen in order to identify the smile patterns in his suit. Vigilante design is flashy, but it feels like he's being held back from fully expressing himself.

Joker never really understood Batman's moral code. For players to unlock the Vigilante route, they had to enable John's more violent tendencies. So his outfit only reflects the darker side of Bruce Wayne because that's what Joker believes to be what Batman wants from him.

John Doe is still unneedingly tragic to me... Like, what do you mean this guy has no memories of before Arkham? What do you mean he likely couldn't have been a criminal beforehand because otherwise he would've been sent straight to Blackgate after being cleared by Dr Leland? What do you MEAN his green hair was probably caused by some random freak accident while he was just a civillian (and young, remember Bruce is only at least in his late twenties during the telltale games, and John we can presume is around the same age, and he claimed he'd been a fan of Bruce Wayne for years.)

I dont know... it makes me upset. Because here's a guy who obviously had no friends or family to recognise him after he was put in Arkham or even anyone to claim him missing. And then he was in Arkham, and suddenly he was top dog. And then he was out of Arkham, and once again he was alone, and scared, and confused.

But, there's a silver lining in all this! Because he befriends Bruce Wayne. Now I wouldn't put it past John to have developed a parasocial relationship with Bruce whilst in Arkham. We KNOW he was interested in him, collected photos of him, etc. So everything seems to be coming up sunshine and rainbows, John has a gorgeous girl who is paying attention to him, and a handsome guy who is paying attention to him, and both of them are so different from eachother that it gives him whiplash being around the two at the same time.

Because Bruce is so tentative and caring, but also stern and judgmental in a way that makes John feel cared for, like someone's finally watching out for him.

Harley on the other hand, is mean and demanding, but also accepting and so familiar to everyone John has known in Arkham that its comforting.

And he doesn't know what one he wants more. He knows WHO he should be with, realistically. Harley is out of his leauge but she's so much more similar to him and it only makes sense he'd be with his own kind. But Bruce is just wonderful, and he could help John out, but John can't find it in him to fully believe Bruce would ever be his friend. He sees himself as lesser than everyone around him, and he just doesn't get WHY a guy as great as Bruce even wants to stick around.

Sigh... SIGH. Maybe I'm in my feels but everything from that one post a person working on The Ememy Within made about how John would love if he could be with both Harley and Bruce has me FROTHING at the mouth.

YAYYYY yesyesyes! So honestly I don’t have MUCH of a story behind it other than I kinda wanted this tattoo because 1. Hot 2. Batman 3. Gothic. But I also wanted to see what it would look like on another person and OFC WHO OTHER THAN JOHN?? Anyway I guess the backstory for John getting it would be he got it to tease the Mr. Wayne. He only did it as an innocent little joke but Bruce could NOT stop thinking about it. Hehe

look the fun of batjokes is that joker kills a bunch of people and goes "Haha!!! What're you gonna do about that, Batsy?? Spank me???" and then they chase each other around the city and exchange homoerotic stabbings

whereas the fun of juce is that john doe kills a bunch of people then turns to bruce with big shiny eyes and says 'I'm weally sowwy and it wasn't my fault I pwommy' and bruce laps it up and says 'okay buddy we'll talk about it later', and THEN they chase each other around the city and exchange homoerotic stabbings

GOOOOD ASS QUESTION!! Goddd tbh Idk if I can really pick just one!! I really liked Tiffany and wish they had even more scenes with her just cause I loved her smmmmm, but I also love Harvey Dent because other than John that’s my baby boy :( I also love Vicki Vale because she was written SOO WELL and I felt so bad for her :(

Favorite telltale episode?

Oooh good question!! Hmmmm it probably has to beeee Episode 4: What Ails You from the second game. There’s just so much happening in that episode and it’s just so many choices that really affect you throughout the rest of the game! Plus it’s mostly abt John and his struggles instead of just his fun silly side (don’t get me wrong though I LOVE fun silly John :)

BRUCE AND JOHN HC’s

Bruce is the little spoon!!

Bruce is more obsessed with John than he lets on. John knows this though and eats it up whenever Bruce shows it.

Bruce is a VERY jealous lover.

Bruce and John were both very touch starved before they met each other. 

John brings color to Bruce’s life both literally and figuratively. Him and bruce live/work together and Bruce loves how John incorporates his unique style everywhere. It makes him feel at home. 

Bruce has always wanted kids but thought John wouldn’t be interested in kids—until he sees John being like the super fun uncle every time he’s around any child. It makes Bruce fall even more in love with him :.)

Bruce has changed a lot since John came into his life. He’s become more emotionally mature, more honest, more relaxed and fun. He can’t imagine what he would be like without john.

John and Bruce adopt a cat together and name him Batsy lol

John and bruce love to cook together! (John’s definitely better at it, but bruce loves to learn and just help him any way he can)

John loves to give words of affirmation, Bruce loves gift-giving and they both love physical touch from each other!!

If they get into arguments John usually wants to continue talking through it (because he’s gone though therapy lol) and Bruce wants to bottle it up. John obviously won’t let him. 

They’re super competitive with each other lol (in a healthy way). For example they’ll go to amusement parks and try to go on all the rides without getting sick to see who can handle it the longest haha

John is very clear that he is against extravagant weddings and marriage proposals. He doesn’t mind getting married but he hates how overdone it is. If they were to get married it would be very small and personal <3

(I kinda had a dream about this) if Bruce and John were parents; Bruce would be a very strict and not really the fun dad (obvi lol) John would be the super fun dad who just plays Roblox with the kids because he enjoys it and loves to hang out with them. :.)

Bruce loves summer time—John hates it. John loves winter/rain—Bruce hates it.

No one knows they’re together, not because they’re hiding it but because they just kinda forgot to tell people lol (they wouldn’t feel the need to tell everyone anyway)

Bruce is an old school romantic—holds the umbrella when it rains, pays for everything, gets flowers, gives his jacket when it’s cold. John loves it, he thinks it’s so cute.

John always calls Bruce “Brucie” “Buddy” “Pal” “pretty boy” as cute lovey pet names. Bruce uses “Bud” “Bub” “Handsome” and “Johnny” bc he said it as a joke once but John loved it and wanted to be called Johnny all the time.

John can get a little too obsessed with Bruce sometimes and calls him his “perfect doll” — Bruce likes it but he won’t say that baha.

Bruce NEVER cared to celebrate holidays before John. It was John’s first time celebrating them so it made Bruce see them in a different light.

Bruce’s name for John in his contacts is just John LOL but he has a photo of John smiling that he LOVES. John on the other hand has hearts/exclamation points/CAPS and even a description of Bruce under his contact 💀 and for his photo it’s of Bruce making an annoyed face at someone that for some reason John loves (he thinks it’s super hot) 

Bruce is super patient with John when answering any questions he has about… anything really. Any basic knowledge questions he has, Bruce answers as kindly as he can.
