i'm still grumpy about the lack of b.enedict's art last season. and i get that he was disillusioned at the end of season 2 and that was a fun and interesting direction but like... it's barely even mentioned in s3 when it's been such a big part of the character since season 1...

the look on his face goes from focused to sheepish when he catches sight of her... it had been the last thing he'd wanted - to be dragged to some tedious house party in the country for several weeks. but here he was all the same. so far, the sole consolation had been the estate's gardens, with their secluded walks and fine prospects. in other words, the ideal place to bring his sketchbook. he had spent all morning in this spot, putting the finer touches on what might be the first sketch in ages that he didn't thoroughly despise. but now - with such company suddenly upon him - he is overcome by the usual discomfort he feels when his art meets the world of the ton. he'd spent years keeping those sphere separate - and he did not intend to change now.

" i'm sorry, " he says, clambering to his feet by way of greeting. his sketchbook is hastily hidden behind his back. " it was rude of me to disappear after breakfast... i know i must appear completely unsociable, " he adds with a rueful smile.

he hated that he knew who the young lady was. not that there was anything wrong with her. it was simply that her name had appeared enough in whistledown - and that he'd heard the columns repeated too often by his sisters - to be able claim ignorance of miss chapel's name and circumstances. he felt a twinge of sympathy. whether she might wish for all the attention or not, he couldn't say. but he knew how it felt to be constantly discussed and dissected so publicly as a marriage prospect. and he could say with certainty that he wouldn't wish the feeling on anyone...

" oh, i'd avoid that if i were you, " he said abruptly, nodding towards the bowl of lemonade on the refreshment table before them. " i heard a rumor that it's been - uh - tampered with... unless that's what appeals to you, of course, " he added, a glint of humor flashing in his eye.

he'd found a perfect hiding place. or so he'd thought.... in the garden, the light from the stuffy ballroom spilled out onto the neatly manicured grass, and the strains of music and laughter mingled together, reaching his ears muffled and distant. after appeasing his mother by dancing precisely one dance, he'd made his escape, ready to embrace the peace and quiet of the evening, unobserved by the ladies - and the mamas - of the ton. that was how he planned to spend the ball - at least until his absence drew too much notice... and it had seemed a perfect plan. until the crunch of a footstep on gravel startled him from his reverie. he stood up quickly and blinked in surprise at the young woman. but after a moment, a rueful smile appeared on his lips. " if my mother has sent you in search of me... what may i do to convince you i was never here? "

i think about it all the time bc since i made this blog, i read the b.edwyn histrom books by mary b.alogh which make w.aterloo a very central, important set piece and i just.... a world where the younger b.ridgerton sons had to actually have professions. a world where ben has to join the army. the clash of an artistic, sensitive and free-spirited personality with the rigidity and structure and violence of that life. the w.aterloo of it all.
