It’s wolf awareness week!

Many wolf/wildlife/nature centers and parks are holding events during this week, so check your local organisations!

Wolf awareness week is celebrated anually, in the third full week of October. 2015 is the only year that diverges - this year it is held the second week of October, from October 12 till October 18.

Hiyas! I'm studying Wolves to be sort of a minor expert on the subject (obviously I have a ways to go). You seem to know what you're talking about on the subject so I would like to ask two questions about a Wolf's vision: are Wolves color-blind? And can they see in the dark? I've heard contradicting answers to these questions so I was hoping for a little clarification. Thanks in advance!

Hi! The answer to these questions are tough to explain without covering some basics of biology etc., so I hope it is understandable. I got most of the information below out of the book “Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation” by L. David Mech and Luigi Boitani -  I’m guessing that book might be of great interest to you! :) 

Wolves, like humans and a lot of other animals, havesomething called cones in their retina, which are colour receptors. Wolves,like all canids studiedto date, are known to have two cone systems; one sensitive in the bluerange (429 nm) and the other in the green range (555nm). (There are three types of cones that differ in the photopigment theycontain. Each of these photopigments has a different sensitivity to light ofdifferent wavelengths, and for this reason are referred to as “blue,” “green,”and “red”.)

Dogs can discriminate colour best on either sideof 480 nm (blue-green), the wavelength to which both cone types are equallysensitive. Colour discrimination then deteriorates rapidly toward both blue andred. A large drop in colour acuity above 520 mn indicates little ability todiscriminate colours in the green to red range. Reports that dogs and wolvescan discriminate red and yellow as colours still need to be evaluated withproper controls for brightness; in theory, red should appear as a fainter shadeof green to a canid possessing only blue and green cones.m

The canine cone system is only 1/30 assensitive as that of humans. Thus canines’ colour vision provides a coarserpicture with fewer hues, and is limited to brighter illuminations, than humancolour vision.

About nightvision: wolves have a high ratio of rods (grayscale receptors)to cones (color receptors) in their retina; in fact, about 95% rods. Thisabundance of rods aids the wolf in the ability to see at night. Although they lose colour vision andsuffer further deterioration in accuracy at night, they can still discern thefeatures of nearby packmates. In particular, the white facial patterns of manywolves may facilitate visual communication at night, and could and could alsoplay an important role in coordinating group attacks on prey, enabling wolvesto keep track of packmates without shifting their gaze from the prey.
