.....it's The Professor i'm mainly talking about the Professor. I know he's a Science Bad Evolution Fake parody man, and I know that because DT literally said it lol, but i'm personally coming at the character from a place of uhhh. "Science is good and helpful, but must be aproached carefully and with good intentions and ethical practices. This guy doesn't do that and that is why he is bad." Yeah.

Also C.harlie A.dler is one of my favourite voice actors in the world and I love when he plays weird, evil little men. (Lifelong S.onic Fan and S.nively R.obotnik Enjoyer over here)

Friends n' Foes

BIG WIP FOR NOW, i’ll update this slowly. My Jim–and by extension the rest of the EWJ cast–is very much a mishmash of different canon incarnations and my own headcanons, so I figured i’d lay out the deetz here.

The Queen

Princess What’s-Her-Name

The Queen of Insectika’s daughter, and disgraced heir to the planet’s throne. A mutant by her people’s standards–that is, having far too much humanoid DNA for her own good–she was never given a name, and was locked away deep in the catacombs of the planet for years by her mother in her efforts to quell any knowledge such an "unpure" being was spawned from the planet's own royal bloodline. Princess is the practical type. Direct, to the point. She is a skilled combatant and shrewd tactician from her years living in exile, fighting off the Queen's guards and finding other Insectikans like her--those banished from society for the crime of simply being born different in a world not meant for them--to lead in revolt against her mother and her reign of terror.

Peter Puppy

Rescued from the Professor’s space station lab by Jim. Formerly a test subject of the Professor, Peter transforms into a hulking, nigh-uncontrollable rage monster in times of anger or stress. Jim (reluctantly) takes Peter under his wing, and over time comes to think of him as something akin to a little brother. Pete has both brains and brawn in spades, though never at the same time. When he isn't chugging the rage-ahol, he and the Princess serve as the counterweight to Jim's tendencies towards both reckless bravado and extreme cowardice.

The Professor

A human man who fled Earth in an act of pure hubris...and to dodge the legal repercussions of his many, many, many highly unethical experiments on man and beast alike. Now residing in a floating space station laboratory, he lends his knowledge and skills to those he deems worthy--and wealthy enough--to bestow upon them. His latest and greatest creation to date is the prototype super suit commissioned by the Queen of Insectika. With the suit now in the possession of a certain subterranean Texan, the Professor is hellbent on retrieving his suit by any means necessary. And a giant, sapient annelid would make for a most intriguing test subject....

Psy-Crow

Deemed "The Scourge of the Space Lanes" by those unfortunate enough to cross his path--or worse, end up on his hit list--Psy-crow is a bounty hunter, one with little qualms about mixing business with pleasure. For as lucrative a career as a hired heel can be, at times it seems as though he's in it for nothing more than the love of the game. Under the Queen of Insectika's orders to assist the Professor in recovering the super suit, this fact is very apparent, because the only thing more tantalizing than a can of worms is a 6 foot long one that can look you in the eyes and beg for mercy.

I think within the OG S.hiny team (as well as the writers of the cartoon) there seemed to be this waffling on whether Jim was an Edgy 90s Action Hero, a Goofy Victim Of Circumstance Protagonist, or just an actual straight-up full-on Manchild sometimes (often) to the point of it just being Uncomfortable and not funny or endearing.

I've gone over a bunch of the media, concept art, comics, eeeverythang, cause Jim's--for better or (usually) worse--one of my Special Interest Blorbos, and I think it's sort of easy to see all the different artists' interpretations of Jim, and also how they all evolved over the production of EWJ 1 & 2, and the cartoon. Even the test reel for the EWJ cartoon had WAAAAY grittier, grosser vibes than what WB eventually came out with. Not that I don't enjoy the cartoon, I just think the tonal shift was...I mean it was certainly interesting.

And with Jim and Princess's relationship, the WB show leaned into the "hypercompetent woman remains clueless about protagonists affections and their relationship he concocted in his head, or even flat-out protests against it until she begrudgingly returns some of the affection" but that was kinda just The 90s. But that coupled with the Manchild bullshit and DT's Conservative Christian insistence/obsession with purity bullshit and Jim being "Childlike" makes their whole thing a thousand fucking times worse. And this is coming from someone who ships them. I just don't fuck with that manchild Pinocchio innocence allegory because i'm not Insane.

Like, Jim may not be "booksmart" across any of his interpretations, there are obviously gaps in his knowledge and understanding of things. Personally I portray him as having some issues parsing written and spoken information that sort of gets "worse" or "better" depending on just..where he's at mentally/emotionally. Sometimes he zones out, sometimes he forgets things. All issues I struggle with myself. And conflating those issues with childishness and innocence or infantilization in general sure doesn't make my almost 32 year old-ass feel very good (Hank Hill voice) I tell ya h'what. (Actually as I was writing this, I went back to Jim's bio and updated it to include that detail.)

ANYWHO, I think Jim's a really good character that ultimately suffers from Too Many Cooks, and one of those cooks gets real fuckin' weird with it in the worst way possible. This franchise is a nightmare. 👍🏻
