Hello, I'd love to join but I have no experience Roleplaying on Tumblr. Are there any references or sites you can provide to clarify the formatting that will be taking place here?
I can do you one better and write you up a quick guide friend, (I’m sure there is a better, more in depth post out there on all this but we struggled to find one.)
I read somewhere on this site that tumblr is hard to rp on but I couldn’t disagree more. It’s pretty simple actually.
There are four formats one may rp in…
Gif rp. Gif rp is quick and dirty, you have a very brief paragraph describing what your character is generally doing and saying and you add a gif to do the heavy lifting in describing what the character’s face and or body language is doing. This is the easiest to start with as it allows you to get across a character’s personality the quickest. One person will make a post, open to all or just for one or two other people and then it will get reblogged back and forth. You’ll want to maybe start doing this most often, just to get a feel for dynamics before you move on to…
Para RP. This is where the deep stuff happens, you get into describing setting, motivation, mindset and more. Para gives you the most control over the scene and is the best way to do more action oriented type plots. This type of RP is more work but also more rewarding. More so than Gif, you’re gonna wanna plot this out. Again, this is done in a reblog format, one person posts and the other reblogs are the story trudges along. Do some selfies. Self paras are short stories about your character and yours alone, so they are the most ideal for doing character development. You make one post, long or short, developing your character’s world, setting up plots, establishing things. These tend to be the hardest to get done because you don’t have a dynamic to work with obviously but they are the format I most encourage because they enrich any dynamic you have. The more selfies you do the deeper their inner world gets. Out of these formats you will probably do this least, even less than…
Tumblr chat and Asks in character. Some RPs will even do ask memes, we don’t but it is a popular way to spark interactions. You can use the chat format, a script looking kinda thing to simulate the feel of texting, you can also use the ask box or submit to send “letters” or “voicemails.
Long story short, there is a type of post on tumblr that is perfect for any sort of RP. The basic thing you have to remember is that it’s all done in a pattern of reblogging that we call a thread (they probably call this a thread on other sites as well, I just dunno). To organize your threads you can use tags and to call someone’s attention to a thread you can “@“ their blog. When I first started tumblr RP I was a little lost but it’s surprising how quick it just sinks in. The best way to learn is to jump right in, you can expect to be supported and cheered on and we’re eager to answer any questions you may have!
