Something about Apothecary Diaries and the complexity of what it means to have a mother. Something about Maomao and her only memories of her mother being silence or a pain that has nothing to do with her but is reflected onto her anyway, and yet still engineering things so that Lakan, years later, would come to find and marry her. Something about all of the courtesans in the Verdigris House being like mother figures to Maomao, yet never paying attention to her when she cried. Something about Loulan doing everything in her power to not be a mother - taking drugs to avoid it, knowing that to have a child would be a selfish, cruel thing, even down to 'killing' the children who adore her. Something about Jinshi, and both of his mothers - the one who birthed him and the one who raised him. Anshi, and raising him to be mature and older than he should have had to be to be the opposite of his grandfather, the man who victimized her, and Ah-Duo, unable to be in his life because she chose to give him up. Something about mothers not being unconditional and uncomplicated; something about motherhood being absent, ugly, confined by circumstance or by past pain. Something about not wanting to be your mother; something about being too much like your mother. Something about how your mother haunts you regardless.

What I call irony is that Maomao at first thought that being lowkey and appearing inattentive would grant her a peaceful life. Little did she know that this was the reason why she was noticed by Jinshi.

He was used to being the center of attention, and wherever he went, people would turn their heads toward him. However, there was only one person who was completely lost in her monologue, unaware of his presence, and it was that freckled girl.

He couldn't resist not knowing what this was all about afterward. It turned out that she literally doesn't buy his "sparkly" persona, nor she tolerate engaging with his "sweet-as-honey" fake behavior that most people swoon over. On the contrary, she responds slightly better to him when he literally drops the act and behaves like his real childish self.

I don't think it's only a matter of him liking that she's not impressed by him, I think he feels safe enough that she doesn't have any ulterior motives toward him which as we have seen, many have tried to whether by lacing food with aphrodisiacs or inserting love charms in his closet.

She's not after his beauty, status, or money. If she ever returned his affection, it would be for his true essence. He doesn't have to "sell out" his charm to get what he wants, nor does he need to act older than his actual age with her. Isn't that.... freedom? No wonder he's in love with her. He just needs to work extra hard to get her affection.

This moment is so important. Because as much as these last two seasons have been building to the Shi clan reveal, they’ve equally been building to the moment Jinshi reveals who he is to Maomao. And this messy, in the middle of a battlefield scenario, blurted out by a soldier is not how he wanted it to go. Ironically though, as we know, Maomao is pretty much already aware of who Jinshi is, this moment just allows her to stop denying the reality. Even though she’s finally confronted with it though, it’s equally important to notice that nothing changes.

She now knows he’s the heir and yet her response is to tease him about his looks. And even when he speaks as the Moon Prince, his authority doesn’t scare her, she doesn’t step away from him or look at him any differently, to me this echoes the sentiment she said during the Hunt, that to her he’ll always be Jinshi. This solidifies the dynamic between them being that while Maomao may be fearful of what Jinshi’s status can mean for her, she’s never fearful of him personally 💚💜

I know I might be biased because I prefer reading the light novels to watching the anime, but I really don’t like the way the anime handles some important scenes between Maoamo and Jinshi.

Because how can you go from this?

Where’s the “she wasn’t sure how she knew, but she knew: she was sure she had seen him.”?!

Or her thinking that he migh be there to save her?!

The reunion scene was better, still not as impactful as in the books, but I can admit this is subjective.

Also, I don’t understand why they didn’t include this line when Maomao gave the hairpin to Loulan?

It’s wasn’t fine to not have it returned because she didn’t care that much. It was fine because she thought the hairpin might come back to her like its original owner does.
