New VADD Fic— Weaver's Aeternum

Summary: Aeternum: to be perpetual, eternal, everlasting. Penelope Eckhart's torment has no end. Even in death, she is cast into agony.

No, because I fully agree with this. While watching the progression of SUOL-nim's artwork throughout the seasons, I can't help but feel that we lost that stylized touch that allowed for better expressivity. I've joked to a lot of people that I miss Derrick's twink era from early in the manhwa but I genuinely think that if SUOL-nim had kept the body shapes some of them had early on, it would've been more distinct and unique, rather than giving most of the MLs the same body shape(save for Callisto, whose extra muscular from the shirtless pics, and for Eckles, whose lean physique is an integral part of his identity as a slave). While her art style has definitely improved a lot from the initial chapters in terms of detail and cleanliness(likely due to the existence of a team to help her), I can't help but feel that there is more repetitiveness in expressions and poses— for example, the panel of og!Penelope in chapter 133 in the cage is identical when Derrick and the Duke are talking about her when waiting for news when she went missing during the Competition(chapter 75). Even then we see some repeated shots or panels, which do sometimes have meaning(such as flashbacks) but as the story progresses, more and more panels are being reused or traced over. This isn't anything against VADD or SUOL-nim, as I know she has to meet certain deadlines and sometimes the manhwa chapters' point in the plot may be predetermined by her superiors. But I feel like at this point VADD is a blatant cash cow and it's being milked aggressively(and honestly, this isn't a reason for why VADD should be dragged along with shorter and shorter chapters with filler. I've been in fandoms who are still pumping out merch and collab cafés years after all adaptations have been done— novel, manhua, animation, live-action, audio drama, etc— looking at you, MDZS). I, personally, would rather wait longer for chapters, maybe one every two weeks(or even longer) if it meant that we would have chapters with more plot and less repetitiveness in them. Of course, I'll still read the chapters as is, but I really hope that SUOL-nim takes care of herself while giving us so much good art. If this is the compromise we get if she is forced to stick to her current, hellish schedule(she herself has mentioned how she barely finishes on time often) for a new chapter each week with periodic breaks, then I'll take it.

@an-angel-so-called-satan made a post about how and why she feels about VADD lately and I 100% stand whit the feeling, but with different reasons.

There's the same push as in 'the villainess is a marionette' for making almost every panel a very detailed work of art and it comes with a price. Personally I don't find the story dragging, instead the artwork stopped being diverse so it's just not registering if that makes sense.

The more simple art slyle that where present in the first two seasons gave SOUL the possibility to play with the characters more. There where more faces, angles and interactions. It was about how to draw the story. Now that time seems to be spent on drawing details and copy-pasting is just necessary to make it before the deadline.

I understand that more high quality panels means there are more merch that can be made, but the difference in the maze chapters and the birthday one (for example) is astounding if you pay attention. SOUL is not only a good artist, but an amazing storyteller and we have been robbed of it in the past seasons.

Thank you so much for Eckhart mansion series loving it! I wanted to tell some information that you mention which is confirm by novel.

1-duke office is on first floor

2-derrick office was located on the west side of the mansion, opposite the one where the Duke's office is located. ( penelope said derrick office looked very desolate and restrained it show his cold-blooded nature.

3-Penelope room is in second floor.

4-Ivonne room is at third floor ( It was the floor where the least amount of people walked around, and it was also because it was the floor that connected to the pathway to the attic ) penelope said even tho her room was pretty good, but the Ivonne room was different from the size of the door. It wasn’t offensive or upsetting.

This isn’t novel but if you see ch 123 you see a lot of Eckhart mansions and…..it looks like palace of versailles……penelope lives where marie antoinette once live…..

Hi! It's a bit confusing, but Shrike is actually a rewrite of Parhelion. The original fic was supposed to be a crossover, but because it got so confusing, I dropped it. Shrike is basically Parhelion minus the crossover, so that's why there's so much worldbuilding. So they're the same fic, just reworked heavily.

Welcome to an Incomplete Tour of the Eckhart Estate!

I thought I'd post everything I know about the Eckhart estate since one, I'm desperate for a tour myself, and two, I wanted all this stuff in one place.

I'll break this into 7 posts; general observations, Penelope's room, Duke Eckhart's study, Derrick's study, the dining room, the attic, and the greenhouse, respectively because I can't post more than 30 photos in one post.

Let's Start!

First: General Observations!

We were only introduced to a few places that were a part of the Eckhart duchy and I don't think we got a picture of the full exterior of the building either. I only have the following two images:

I spent a crapload of time trying to put these two images together, but can't, so all imma say is that the estate most likely has 6 floors if we judge by these images: the attic at the top, the floor below that, which is shown in the first image, the second floor, which is below that and also the floor the second picture was taken at, the first floor, which is below that, and then the main floor, where the plants from the second image are. That's five. The sixth is their basement, which, I'm pretty sure Eckles was said to have been locked up in for interrogation later in the story.

I'm referring to the first floor as the floor directly above the main floor since Reynold called the highest floor the third floor and in some regions, it works that way.

I'm not saying 'floor' again for a month after this

Ivonne's room is on the floor shown in the first pic, since the staircase leading to the attic is accessible from there.

Penelope's room is on the floor directly below (in theory) and Reynold's is underneath hers and one of the windows shown in the second image.

Speaking of Reynold's room!

We've only been inside Penelope's bedroom, but looking at the following image:

We can say that his room probably has the same theme as Penelope's since he has the same window color as hers (a shade of brown/gold, but the lighting is probably affecting it at the current moment) and everything in every other room we've seen matches. Penelope's room is brown, gold, and red, but we'll get into that later.

If Reynold's room is the same theme as Penelope's... maybe the rest of the household members also have the same layout?

Lastly, we have their corridors!!

This image shows one of the halls leading to Duke Eckhart's study. Penelope often takes this path.

Looking at this picture in detail, we can see Penelope crossing a door (it's on her right). Considering how Derrick is always around, like seriously always when Penelope is going to visit Duke Eckhart's study, I estimate that this room is probably Derrick's study. Is that too random a guess? I thought it was kinda logical 😅

These last pictures, and the first one too, suggest that the entire first floor has a dark theme; all these corridors have a dark purple wallpaper with gold outlines and we've also seen that the two studies are a dark blue theme.

P.S. I'm not going to talk about anything outside the building like the training area for the knights

Oh and one more thing I forgot to add: there are a lot of windows.

I just want to. hold Penelope!SJ in my hands. YOU'RE DOING GREAT HONEY. I feel like with SY's obliviousness he doesn't really fit into the Laila role, and aus are aus for a reason anyways, they don't have to follow the original spirit of the au too closely.

I also don't think our Shang hamster would be capable of writing stuff like that... sorry hamham, but from what we know of you and PIDW, you're not the type to write secret horror twists

To be honest, I'm kind of rooting for SJ returning to the modern world(because Siyeon didn't, and I got so fucking disappointed,, like. girlie. you're just gonna give up? like that?? damn. no wonder I latched onto OG!Penelope as my favorite character) because he actually has friends! The game is just made of caricatures of his own friends(and incomplete ones, too), and it's very much "knife in heart" type of feelings for him.

As for Roxana!SJ, I LOVE the moth change, but I always thought that keeping the butterfly motif would be a good metaphor, especially with the demon butterflies. Beautiful, seemingly fragile, yet so dangerous and predatory at the same time. It's doubly true if he keeps the backstory of not being exactly in good health as a child(aka slavery/abuse), growing up to be more willowy and slender rather than the absolute units that YQY and LBH are in canon.

A way to make it work could be like the bamboo is representative of his inner self?? And the butterflies work as an additional metaphor of glamour which covers up his inner self, just like how in canon he covers up his slave heritage and time as a demonic cultivator with the mask of a "lazy, spoiled young master".

Of course, all up to you, I just brainrotted for a bit and word vomited onto the post.

I personally think that the og story would've worked if it was og!Roxana who regressed into a baby(someone on some forums said that our transmigrator was also og Roxana in her first life?? not sure) albeit her information might be a bit limited. Still, it would've been nice to see Roxana still being the puppetmaster she was, and it would've been a greater usage of her butterflies and capabilities if she gathered a lot more information rather than just relying on the novel's omniscience.

oh you have no idea how long ive waited to talk about them. this mayyy get a bit long so ill leave it under the readmore.

disclaimer: i intend on finishing these fics so what im going to be talking about is inspirations and unfinished / abandoned ideas and other ideas i have for the works instead of anything relating to the plots themselves

for svadd, sj is a lot more complicated than he appears to be on the surface. im not so sure if what i have written currently is what i /want/ exactly because i know i want his character to go a certain way. the relationships between him and his modern-day friends is one meant to parallel the in-game "shen qingqiu" sj compares himself to and in much the same way, mirror the way that sy contrasts himself with sqq in canon: but instead of being condescending and viewing sqq as a one dimensional character, sj is able to appreciate his nuance while still being rightfully angry over his actions

to me, sj is supposed to be an unreliable narrator who constantly enforces his own thoughts. he tells himself over and over that he misses his home and that he wants to go back, that he absolutely needs to- but then, he turns the other way and finds himself being sucked even deeper into this different one.

i also really wanted to explore how sjs dynamic with a lot of the characters would be affected knowing that they were "based off" his real friends, but again im not very confident with how it came off lol

there was a lot of points in the story where i attempted to add in foreshadowing for the ending i want the story to take... in any case, it definitely wont go the same way as vadd, though i did toy with the idea of a "version" of sy being the main villain haha

(it might still happen for shits and giggles)

as for the roxanna au there are a lot of things ive wanted to do with this au and its good that i havent posted because it means i can keep revising til i come up with something good lol

its a liujiu au with some bingyuan / cumplane thrown into the mix (the cumplane is overwhelmingly toxic btw bingyuan is the healthy one out of the two here 😭) where yes sj is xana !!! he really just makes such a good manhwa villainess haha

i had been puzzling over what i wanted his motif to be-- after all, sj is typically associated with the simplicity and calming bamboo so the glittering butterflies wouldnt work with him- but after some deliberation i decided with using moths for him :3c still subject to change ofc but i think im happy with this as is

the story is somewhat similar to how roxanna goes but surprise sj isnt the transmigrator here! (and honestly, roxanna wouldve been sm better if xana hadnt been a transmigrator... or maybe i just think that because it was only used as a convenient plot point for her to know crucial info. sigh.)

my outline of how the roxanna au goes is basically this:

lqg fucks around and finds out

sj who has been seeing dreams of the "book" sy read knows what will happen to his family if lqg dies

etc

at the same time: sy, transmigrator, attempts to make sure his only surviving older brother lives to a long happy life and the only way he can secure this is by fucking up that hack author

also i killed off qi-ge and idk if i want him to come back. he'll be like the stereotypical dead anime mother for this au lmao

OG! Penelope Eckhart Headcanons: A Life Before the Eckharts

Part 6!

This one was uh... it took a while. While some may remember Shrike's version of Penelope's parents, who are perhaps the best parents she could ask for... the reality, I think, will be much darker.

Studies, like Bywaters et al. (2022), which is a critical review of research papers in the period between 2016-2021 that compiles evidence and analyzes them together, show that food insecurity, low income, unemployment, and other factors in relation to poverty lead to a higher chance of childhood neglect.[1]

Given that from canon, we know that Penelope's father is dead or at least presumed so— "Her widowed mother was a poor traveling merchant"[2]— it's reasonable to assume that he's just not in the picture.

From Part 4, if you recall, Penelope is a World Catalyst where her world is expressed as a romance-genre dating simulator. I'll definitely elaborate on this in another part, but suffice to say, Penelope's life is pretty much written to be tragic no matter what.

Thus, isn't it fitting to give her a just-as-horrible childhood before the Eckharts?

It would certainly explain why she was so desperate for love, despite the seemingly-obvious idea that she misses the love of her biological family.

The Father— Aleksander

Aleksander is a Greek name meaning "defender of the people", with this particular variant can be traced to Central and Eastern Europe.

Aleksander is from the Northern territories of the Eorka Empire, near the borderlands with treacherous, eternal winter. He moved from the North to warmer lands when he became of age.

He had three siblings, but his older sister died shortly after marriage. On the other hand, his younger brother died in childhood from sickness and a particularly harsh winter.

His father disappeared one day while hunting for prey in the forests, and his mother was beaten to death for stealing from a noble household.

Aleksander has classic, deep magenta curls (think old Hollywood). The color is so dark that it looks black.

His hair is left somewhat lengthy, reaching his mid-back and tied back with a ribbon.

In addition, his eyes match his hair but have an orange glow to them instead.

He has a slender physique, not necessarily muscular or very strong.

Aleksander is extremely religious.

He has a pleasant smile and a gentle disposition, but that doesn't mean he's weak or useless.

He knows how to wield a small dagger, but that's it.

Aleksander was a doting father and loving husband, content with a simple life with his family.

Originally, he left the church he was a part of to follow his wife, but left and returned to his religion and the North when he found out that Penelope had mana.

His religion actively pursues wizards and those of Ancient Wizard blood, and his daughter is no exception.

It's unclear what happened on the day he found out. All his wife knows is that when she returned from her daily trip to the marketplace to sell her wares, her husband was gone, with blood on the bed.

Penelope was holding her neck, terrified.

In the aftermath, he became obsessed with tracking down wizards to "atone" for not having killed Penelope, torn between the guilt of attempted silicide and also the regret of not having snuffed out an Arcani's life.

He feels similarly torn with Nilar, reasoning that since he can never be a descendant of those filthy traitors who served Laila(the Ancient Wizards), then Penelope's magic must have come from his ex-wife.

Aleksander's fate is unknown, but evidently kept out of the capital and surrounding territories, staying in the outskirts. Penelope never met him again.

Edit: ok I didn't mention his third sibling but his mother had the baby when he was away studying to be a priest. It's not clear what happened to the child, but it died before he could meet his sibling.

In truth, Aleksander HAS Ancient Wizard heritage, ironically — his sibling was killed because flowers started blooming around the infant in the middle of winter. Like, summer flowers in the crib, growing out of the mattress.

His mother, terrified, suffocated the infant. Truly, like mother, like son.

The Mother— Nilar

Nilar is a female name of Burmese origin meaning "Sapphire", with the origin having NOTHING to do with my characterization of Penelope's mom. I left the choice up to @eloise175 in a blind-box situation.

If it had any bearing, it would be that Nilar was born in a foreign land but is Eorkan by blood. Her parents just settled down in a foreign land for a bit to ride out the pregnancy.

She was part of a merchant ship crew that docked frequently in the port city of Tratan. By extension, it's near Soleil Island, which is Laila's hideout.

She has abandonment issues due to her parents' mysterious disappearance when she was young. While traveling, she met Aleksander and fell deeply in love.

Nilar is an accomplished Arcani(One who uses mana and is of Ancient Wizard descent). However, her love for Aleksander blinded her, causing her to seal her own powers so he wouldn't turn on her.

Nilar's mother's powers were primarily water-based, which is why they were seafaring. Her powers are Earth-based.

Nilar's hair is naturally a bright pale turquoise-green with darker roots, ending around her mid-thighs. The ends of her hair shift according to her mana. It'll turn from a burnt-sienna color to a pale blonde when uses her powers.

As a civilian, her hair is kept in a low bun.

Nilar's eyes are bright green, near-glowing in their saturated hues. She passed them onto her daughter, though Penelope's eyes tend to stray more turquoise.

She has a soft expression as her default, but her face is naturally stern, which is where Penelope's default "villainess expression" stems from.

In addition, she has a strong physique, from her years as a mercenary in addition to being a merchant. She didn't just settle in Eorka but traveled all over the world before meeting Aleksander.

Had she never settled down with Aleksander, she might've been hired as an Imperial mage, or even an Archmage to fight for the Empire.

Nilar's love blinds her to the red flags surrounding her husband.

After she had Penelope, she became more frail as a result(Giving birth to a World Catalyst, especially one so connected to the world, takes a toll).

When she found out that Aleksander left with her daughter injured, Nilar kind of shut down. She tried to take care of Penelope but found herself spiralling into self-doubt, especially since her daughter looks just like her missing husband with the hair and smile.

As Penelope grew older, Nilar worsened in health, especially since she could no longer easily support two people and pay for expensive medication. She didn't unseal her mana, deluding herself that Aleksander would come back. Poverty made things worse, and the neglect and abuse began to worsen.

Nilar would always cry and apologize to Penelope but it became so frequent that Penelope began to doubt her. Her health and mental state deteriorated to the point where her own mana was lashing out against her, worsening her condition.

Eventually, she died of sickness, a mere three months away from Penelope's 10th birthday.

Life as a Street Orphan

Penelope wandered for many months between villages and towns, hitching rides on merchant carts in exchange for some labor.

She would take refuge in abandoned houses, sheds, and as she got to larger settlements, brothels.

The ladies there cooed over her magenta hair and sparkling eyes, giving her at least a warm bath and clean(if a bit shabby) clothing.

When she got to the capital, Penelope, again, stayed in some of the brothels. She acted as a messenger girl and was groomed to be one of the upcoming new flowers(essentially, she would've started working at the brothel when she was fifteen).

However, an incident with an unruly customer who tried to touch her made her lash out and stab the customer to death with a sharp hairpin.

She fled the brothel, living on the streets as she continued to wander further and further away. She lived in a dilapidated shed amongst the rest of the shacks. It was barely standing with one wall completely broken down.

During the rainy season, Penelope dragged herself back only to find a woman collapsed in her shed, clearly dead.

At this point, she was too weak and hunger-starved to drag the body out, so she stayed inside with the body.

Eventually, this was how Duke Eckhart found her.
