@thewinedarksea‘s Mythology Meme: Creatures (½)
Siren(s) - Monstrous sea nymphs that lured sailors to their deaths with an eerie song. They were once handmaidens of Persephone but were given bodies of birds when Persephone went missing by Demeter.

     YOU AND ME AND THE DEVIL MAKES THREE -- DON’T LEAVE NOBODY BUT THE BABY.
      -- Do you like Greek mythology? Do you like deadpan and pretty girls? Mythological lesbians? What about ... BIRDS ? If so, then have I got the OC for you. Meet Lashea ( Shay for short ) . She’s a Siren. You know, one of those bird ladies that sang to Odysseus as he was tied to his boat mast. The same sort of Sirens that lured men to their watery graves and that were cursed with their forms by Demeter in order to search for Persephone when she was taken by Hades. Those kind of Sirens!
       Shay likes literature and privacy. She’s not the easiest to talk to, but hoooo boy ! Once she gets to know you, you’ll never get rid of her. Currently, she’s a librarian in Manhattan. Girl has to make a living somehow!
     If you would be interested in interacting with Shay, please LIKE / REBLOG this post ! It would really help me out considering it has been quite some time since I have written an OC and I’m a bit ... nervous, to say the least. Please and thank you !!

I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE ORIGINAL SIRENS OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY ARE NOT MERMAIDS! REAL SIRENS ARE BIRD LADIES THAT LIVE ON A PILE OF ROCKS AND SEDUCE PEOPLE WITH PROMISES OF WHATEVER THEY WANT AND ITS NOT NECESSARILY SEXUAL. THEY’RE BASICALLY HARPIES BUT UGLIER

Badass Mythical Women and Creatures → Sirens
In Greek mythology, the sirens were beautiful, young maidens with the lower half of their body being that of a bird. Extremely dangerous, these lethal beings lured passing sailors to their deaths with enchanting songs. Before their transformation, they were handmaidens of Persephone before her kidnapping by Hades. In return, Demeter turned some of their body into a bird, so they could assist in the search. The sirens, however, gave up and eventually settled on the Island of Anthemoessa.
They are believed to be the daughters of Achelous and Melpomene although their numbers vary. The most known sirens include Aglaope, Leucosia, Ligeia, Molpe, Parthenope, Peisinoe, and Thelxiope.
The Argonauts sailed by the sirens and were nearly slaughtered, but Orpheus recognized the danger of the lovely siren song, and began to play another song on his lyre. They barely evaded a watery grave. Odysseus also encountered the sirens, but instructed his crew to plug wax in their ears as not to hear anything. This plan worked, and they sailed quietly past the enraged sirens. After these two failures, the sirens are said to have thrown themselves into the turbulent ocean surrounding their island and killed themselves. Some of their bodies have even washed up on the shores of distant states.
