In his post - war verse, Madara lost his connection to Indra’s soul upon his revival via Obito’s Rinne Tensei. It was for this reason that he was so easily swayed by Hashirama’s words of caution against the path he was taking. Without Indra’s hatred &&. vengeance sewn into his very soul   —— —   a soul that was now solely &&. utterly his own   —— —   Madara realized that he had lost much of his will to fight   (   specifically Hashirama, but in general as well   )   .

The gravity of his actions dawned on him in full clarity. He could still understand why he did it all, why he’d felt the way he’d felt, &&. most importantly what he’d hoped to achieve, but now that he was not so blinded by a rage that was not his to begin with, he could comprehend why it was wrong.

Madara was overcome with guilt &&. regret after the fact, so much so that he fell into a deep depression upon his return to the village. At one point he had even tried to sacrifice himself by performing Rinne Tensei himself in order to bring back the lives he had taken, but he had lost every ounce of trust from the world &&. was prohibited from performing any manner of jutsu for a very, very long time. This was enforced through a seal placed on his stomach that locked his chakra, preventing him from using it entirely. The seal is still there, allowing for most of his chakra to be used, but accessing it is purely at the discretion of the one who placed it there.
