He puts the kindling in the fireplace. He lights the match. He's going to rid himself of this vice, he swears. But to what end? What good is paper turned to ash, in the face of the unknowable? What good is it in the face of love? He lights a second match. The first has burned his fingertips. He tosses the letters into the fire and knows he's achieved nothing.

John stared the small, gold plates on the bench, vision pulling in and out as Elias' words began to fade. He could see, carved into the soft gold, new names.

Martin Blackwood--surely Martin was dead, wasn't he? That...whatever it was that was locked in the wall had mentioned others. Teasing perhaps but...

"John, please, we need to talk about this--"

Gertrude, speaking into the camera for an office-style mockumentary: “I have reason to believe my current boss, Elias Bouchard, is actually the body-swapped reincarnation of my previous boss, James Wright. In fact I believe he is every head of the Magnus Institute dating back to Jonah Magnus himself. He’s been careful to hide all evidence but I’ve caught him in a key slip up.”

--*camera cut to Elias Bouchard sitting in a library chair, Gertrude filing away books behind him*--

Gertrude: “Oh excuse me James can I sneak through?” Elias: “Oh, yes.” *scoots chair* "Sorry about that."

--*camera cut to Gertrude opening the door to Elias’s office*--

Gertrude: “Excuse me Francis but do you have a moment?” Elias: “Sorry, what was that?” Gertrude: “I was asking if you have a minute, Richard.” Elias: “If it’s quick, I have a meeting in 10 minutes.”

--*camera cut to Gertrude and Elias standing in a Starbucks*--

Elias: And where do we pick up— Gertrude: The table over there. I ordered ahead for us. Elias: *studies the table, lights up subtly and grabs the coffee cup second from the left, camera zooms in on the label that says Jonah Magnus. Elias walks away while Gertrude makes eye contact with the camera.

--*camera cut back to Gertrude*--

Gertrude: “He hasn’t noticed I’m doing it yet.”

Since the chapter was delayed, enjoy a second snippet!

He could see, at the bare edge of the long passage, a shape. A human shape, or at least human enough that his steps jolted with pain lancing up from his leg.

His heart, hammering in his chest, said it was Prentiss.

Mouse.

Michael.

Someone who should not have been there, something that should have been found by the police on their extensive investigation.

Something else--stronger and growing in its desire to know for certain--had him turning the torch light to try and catch it in the weakening beam.
