Final reflection
This research has been an absolute whirlwind. I feel proud of what I have made, but like always, I wish I had more time. I was astonished that at the beginning of this week I had 0 books, and by thursday afternoon I had 3 books and 3 slip cases! Goes to show what you can do under time pressure. I ended up doing 422 hours on this project, after keeping an obsessive time management log. I was only 28 hours off! I think if my dad hadn't had his 80th in aus I would have hit my goal.
I will be glad to no longer update this little one note page... it had such a hold over me and I often felt guilty for not doing enough. I'm very ready for a holiday. I'm sure you are too, whoever is reading this :)

Final photos I decided to submit. I wish I had more time to edit them, but I'll give it antoher go for the AD22 website :)
Unfortunately, moments after taking these photos, I dropped the slip case and it broke! I'd like to kintsugi it back together for AD22, so I had to hand in my backup case that still fit, but didn't have the nice effect with the hokey pokey glaze...

As George pointed out, it is definitely very fitting that it would break for my project on imperfections, mistakes and failures. I'm kind of wishing I'd still handed it in. Oh well, it will be a great opportunity to continue to put my ethos into action between now and AD22 and try my hand at kintsugi.

Taking pics for hand in after choosing my favourite case. I really like the honeycomb dribbles - it feels imperfect and expressive and reminiscent of kintsugi - shoutout to sisi for being my hand model and to abbey for the backdrop!

Making the covers: the process was screenprinting a scribble on some bookcloth, making the card cover and then foiling the text on. I wanted to foil the text to ensure more accuracy (also the pt size would haven been very small to screen print)
I ended up making a hard cover for both the sketchbook and the Ethos, as I wanted the books to feel more like a proper collectable series - rather than fully zine-like. I wanted to elevate and celebrate the imperfection to the status of a proper looking book.

Final Week of Making!!!
I ended up having to print the entire first book (both the black and yellow layers) on the riso, because I couldn't get the registration to line up on the uni printers - and the very confused looking guy at warehouse stationery also could not get the printer to print double sided with registration that lined up. A good lesson to go to a professional printer in the future! It ended up giving the first book a great quality though!!
Sizing still working okay after a first bisque of the cases!!!

Week 11 703 SDL : Workshopping the Abstract
Instructions: Read the article about what is a good academic abstract, and past an image of your abstract developments during the class, then summarise and reflect in a 300 to 500 words blog post.
Writing an Academic Research Abstract: For Communication Design Scholars by Dan Wong, Aaris Sherin, Carma Gorman, Jessica Barness
First Copy:
Critiques after reading article:
I think I have "opaque or verbose" language, but then again, I think all academic language is opaque and verbose... even the phrase 'opaque and verbose' is, in fact, opaque and verbose....
I think just glueing together the sentences from the abstract wizard has meant that it feels quite jumpy... I think workshopping it for some more flow would make sense
the abstract needs to include conclusions/findings: perhaps the fact that the only way to shed those perfectionist tendencies is to practice imperfection yourself. It's all very nice looking at what someone else has done and saying 'wow their imperfection looks perfect', without actually doing it. Baptism by fire.
The final outcome after some workshopping^^
Reflection
I still think it's a bit cheesy... unsure as to how to make it seem less... for lack of a better word, floopy?
I think it needs more contemporary/artistic context still
im' still a little confused between an abstract vs an introduction. Perhaps needs some more research
Even though i'm not going to put headings within my abstract, I still want it to be structured in that it still flows.

Rolling out the clay between pieces of calico meant that the clay fired with a 'bookcloth' texture - this felt very fitting for its purpose as a slip case.
Here is the process of making the cases. It was all very made up. I now see why I can't find image of this anywhere on the internet. This whole process was far more difficult thank I anticipated!
Bottom image: I also wanted to test out how the glaze would fire on my prototype cases. Here is a creative way to dry the dipped caess
edit from a week later: they sagged in the kiln and closed up with that much glaze! Back to the drawing board. (I didn't manage to find a picture of this)

Making 10 slip cases (I only need one but am worried about them warping/breaking in the kiln so I thought I'd make extra)
edit from october 28: this ended up being a great idea as the one I chose smashed right before hand in... thankfully I had an army of backups...
The method I ended up going with was cutting up a memory foam pet bed I bought from kmart into different sized rectangles (to account for different amounts of shrinkage). The idea was to roll out the clay and connect it around the sponge, so that when it dried it would be able to slip out.

Week 11 703 Wizard Abstract Tool
I feel like 'wizard' is a strong word here. I thought it was going to change the structure or at least put the raw text together!
Here is what my first draft of an abstract would look like though:
How to make Imperfectly: celebrating imperfection in the creative process
Keyword List
imperfection
design
art
creative process
failure
Area of Research
Research
Practice
(not typing it so it doesn't get pinged for plagarism)
Reflection: I think it needs some work, but it's perfectly respectable in it's current form. So I take back what I said... thanks Wizard!

Week 11 In class Abstract Task
Reflection on this task: To be honest, I found this surprisingly difficult. Iv'e read an. abstract or two in my day, but reading multiple made me realise that they're all structured quite differently (despite containing mostly the same ingredients). I can't tell if it was difficult to identify which aspect was which because they were not written so well, or because I was not understanding it. I assume the latter or they probably wouldn't have been given to us as examples.

Week 11 703 Notes & Reflection
Class notes:
Title: title should be 10-12 words long, slightly poetic
Key words: 5x what people might search to find your work
Problem statement: 1 sentence
Thesis: one sentence - what is the current knowledge around your research?
Methodology (two sentences): how did i go about conducting the research?
Results/Outcomes: What's your practice and how your practice will contribute to an area of knowledge? I answered my research question by producing a publication that looked at xyz
Conclusion: reiterates the thesis/claim, explains how and why your project might be useful to others in the field
Postgrad stuff from our lecture:
Studylink won't give me any more money, so I didn't take in a lot of the postgrad options to be quite honest.
I think in addition to the financial aspects, I don't know how much I agree with the general academic/scholarly realm, so unless I am overcome with some obsessive vision that I must reify in a postgrad setting - I think I'll stick with an undergrad!
Reflection: I feel content with the amount of thinking that's gone into the exegesis; and I think for others who are keen to do Masters, it will be a great segue into the academic world. In all honesty, I'm feeling ready to never read another academic article again, but also appreciative that I've been granted the skills to be able to interpret them - should I ever need to.
Useful Slides on abstract structure:
It seems that the abstract is a cute little mini exegesis; following the same structure as the whole text.
Note: remember to create an introduction to the exegesis stating:
Significance of the project,
Describe each of the chapters,
List the key terms used in the exegesis.

Crit with Aakifa:
She really liked the type experiments! She had barely any criticisms which was really good. It was only minor tweaks here and there. She thought my files were hilariously chaotic. I promise it's only to achieve that effect - the rest of it is tidy!

Getting some pieces out of the kiln. I was able to see how different glazes interacted with each other on my little test pieces and on some brick red clay too. My final decision was to layer hokey pokey (the tan colour) with mirror black to get dribbles and cracks and texture. I like the way the glazes interacted on this bowl:
