Have y'all seen the update of smeyer's website? Nobody seems to be talking about this? This quote down there is from her website:
Tumblr media
It's not from ANY book she has released so far (as far as I know) and sound very much like something Jacob would say. I'm afraid this is a hint for an upcoming Jacob x Rasputin book Y'ALL I'M SCARED I HOPE IT'S NOT WHAT I THINK IT IS

Just out of curiosity, in case the line about blackest night seems familiar to anyone, it's because it's a famous line by Anne McCaffrey, one of the very famous and influential classic fantasy and scifi writers, the author of Dragonriders of Pern. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/345356-the-blackest-night-must-end-in-dawn-the-light-dispel
Incidentally, also one of the inspirations for imprinting!
Imprinting was inspired by two different sources: ducklings and dragons. Imprinting actually exists in nature, but usually between parents and their offspring. I saw a nature documentary about ducklings imprinting on their moms and it always stuck with me. The other inspiration is Anne McCaffrey’s dragon books (which, if you haven’t read them, do so now! Start with Dragonflight). In her mythology, humans and dragons bond so tightly that if one of them dies, the other either suicides or goes mad. They love each other with an absolute and unreasoning love that never falters or changes. I was always captivated by this concept, and I wanted to explore that kind of life-changing and compulsory relationship. (source)
I did read some of the Dragonriders of Pern books ages ago so I don't remember them all that well, but yes, they're classics.
What's strange to me about her inspirations is that neither of these are in any way romantic; she's the one who takes it to the romantic level. I do wonder if that's from the Mormon literature idea of pre-mortal romance. Again, this is literature (fiction) not scripture:
The werewolves of the Twilight books never know when (or if) they will imprint on someone. Once they become a werewolf during adolescence, they may imprint at any time, and when they do, any prior relationship becomes unsustainable because an imprinted werewolf can never turn away from his or her imprintee. Sudden recognition that then lasts eternally? The Premortal Romance. (source)
There was a more in-depth version of this article online years ago, but this summary one gives you the gist. The tl;dr is that we all exist in the pre-mortal realm before we are born, and can form attachments there. Then when we are born on earth, we can find that other soul and instantly and eternally connect. I know I bring it up like once a year, and that it's entirely possible SM didn't read these (much older!) works of Mormon fiction at all, but man, it explains SO MUCH about imprinting to me. I still don't like it personally, and choosing to use this device with toddlers and babies is . . . uh . . . not great IMO, but if she did read these works I can see what she was going for.

Beau vs Bella #1
So I’m at my favorite part (Carlisle/Carine’s story) and here’s Bella’s narration in Twilight
Tumblr media
and now here’s Beau’s:
Tumblr media
Notice the difference? EMPATHY. Beau actually seems to care about the story he just heard, what Carine suffered in becoming a vampire. Now Carine’s version is slightly different than Carlisle’s, but the vampire horror of it is the same. This extra little bit from Beau is so nice! This is what I wanted from Bella! We’re told how good and kind she is, and maybe this is one of the things SM was trying to fix, because Beau nailed it.

I may be biased (I named my kid Elizabeth!) but I cannot get over what a missed opportunity this was.
But, then again, giving your daughter an awful ~unique~ name is a VERY Mormon thing to do, so maybe I'm the fool for ever expecting anything different.
She's not going to be "Renesmee" in public, right?
I mean, the Cullens are supposed to 'blend in.' Giving your child a one-of-a-kind name is not conducive to that. I suppose they didn't know she was going to be immortal but it wouldn't be a bad idea to assume she may be and consider that when choosing a name? It's the one time they could have made a strategic, thoughtful choice about it.
Which, again, Elizabeth is right there. For Edward's human mother whose plea made Edward and Bella meeting possible in the first place, and for Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. It's got a million nicknames that can fit any vibe or aesthetic you want. It makes so much sense. It feels so in character. It matches the other Cullen names, especially Alice, Edward and Isabella (which is essentially the same name as Elizabeth, btw, so 'Elizabeth' could also be honoring Bella, which I think Edward would love!).
'Renesmee' is always going to stick out. She's gotta be going by Ren/Wren or Nessie (tells people it's short for Vanessa) or Carlie or something in public, right?
The Cullens were never very good at blending in as written, but 'old fashioned' grandparent names don't stick out in quite the same way. 'Renesmee' is unique and memorable in a way that's not great for secrecy. I still remember people from my school days who had interesting names.

Twilight AU where religious iconography does repel vampires but how much it repels them is directly in proportion to how many people they’ve killed/eaten.  Thus Carlisle keeps his father’s cross outside his study so his slightly-murdery family won’t interrupt him unless it’s REALLY important because it makes them feel bad to walk past it.
Except Jasper (and maybe Edward? oh the angst!) who can’t get near it at all.

i love when people on here well be like “who DOESN’T want their blood to get sucked ? 🤨” well i hate to break it to you but the average person does not, in fact, want to have their blood get sucked. statistically there is a large amount of people who do not want this to occur. this is shocking and appalling, i know. the world is full of unsettling things

hate ppl that ignore traditional vampire weaknesses purely bc they're inconvenient like no shit there has to be some trade off they're cautionary tales of hoarding wealth and clinging to outdated power structures you can't just let that be cool and go unchecked! bootlicker behavior! this is a subjective post on one vampire fan's personal blog! vampires are supposed to be frozen in time and unable to grow or change! and mirrors not working is an extension of that bc growth requires self-reflection! vampires are fundamentally about the existential horror of permanence! the futility of preservation! but twilight gets a pass because "we don't burn up in the sun we just sparkle but we still don't go out in it bc we don't want to cause traffic accidents" is very funny.

Grandpa Cullen
“Um, there’s some old dude pacing in the hallway outside your office.” Carlisle glanced up from the medical journal he was reviewing. “What?” He listened carefully—no footsteps, no heartbeat. “I’m serious,“ Emmett said, “come take a look.” Carlisle rose from his chair and Edward and Esme followed, preparing themselves for some sort of ridiculous Emmett-style prank. They were shocked when there was indeed an old man in the hallway. The figure glared at Carlisle a moment before finally speaking. “How do you even manage to have this,” he gestured to the cross, “in your possession, blood-drinker?”
“It is nice to see you again too, Father. How have you been?”

Don't know why I'm thinking about the five stages of trauma and the Cullen kids: Alice-Denial; Rosalie-Anger; Jasper-Bargaining; Edward-Depression; Emmett-Acceptance?

Thinking about "convinced they're a monster, terrified of getting close to people because they don't want to hurt them" x "you're not a monster to me but like I'm also a little into it when you get scary ngl" this sounds really specific but I've had several pairs of blorbos like that
