One little Slam Dunk mystery finally solved

You know that scene where Mitsui and his gang are heading to the gym/basketball courts to pick a fight? Here's a little mystery I never quite understood until recently.

So they run into Yohei and the oldest, strongest fighter in the gang (Tetsuo) tries to kick Yohei.

Yohei blocks easily it with his schoolbag and I never understood why it looked so effortless. I mean, that looked like a pretty potent kick! How did he do it?

The answer came to me in the form of a doujinshi (see here), where Haruko notices that Yohei's bag weighs a lot. She discovers a teppanyaki metal plate inside and asks why he's got that. Yohei gives her some BS reason ("so we can have teppanyaki anytime..." LOL) but of course it's just a cleverly hidden "shield". Very handy for delinquents!

(A Japanese friend and fellow Slam Dunk fan later confirmed this; back in the day some delinquents would stick teppanyaki plates inside their bag for exactly this reason.)

Considering the fact they’re basketball players who have to condition (even on the off-season), I thought this would be fun to think about :). And also i go to the gym and i see boys like them all the time there

slam dunk boys at the gym

rukawa

• One thing about Rukawa, he is going to the gym ALONE. Like it’ll literally be him, his airpods, a towel, and a fat waterbottle against the world. I don’t think he’d hate working out with someone, but he’d prefer to workout alone since he can stay focused and go at his own pace.

• He’d have both his AirPods in at full volume and go CRAZY on the machines/weightlifting bars. I think for his stamina, he would use the Stairmaster at full speed and go on it for as long as he could.

• I’d say that he does workouts for all of his body, but his favorite workouts would be arm ones, just because he’ll be able to put more power into his basketball shots.

• I don’t think he’d be approached by anyone at the gym since he’s always super focused on his workout and looks VERY intimidating, but if you went up to him and asked him for help, he’d do it.

• BUTTTT If he was in a bad mood that day, he might just put his AirPod right back in and ignore you 😂. However, after he cools off, he’d feel kinda bad. And then sigh and go up to you like “What did you need help with?”

• HE’D DEF BE ADMIRED BY ALL THE GYM BADDIES!!!!!

• Ok I feel like his level of productivity would depend on who he’s at the gym with. If he’s with Mitsui, those two are gonna try and compete with who could lift heavier weights 😂. But if he’s with Sakuragi, aint NOTHING getting done.

• He will take a ton of gym photos and mirror selfies and post them like “Hitting the gym today ✅” on Insta/Snap. AND HE’LL SEND THEM ALL TO AYAKO 😂😂😂. His gym fits will be coordinated asf too!!! He will go over there dripped out!!!

• I think if he goes alone he’d be really focused. He wouldn’t look intimidating or anything but he’d keep to himself and put on some music (def rnb like bryson tiller or brent faiyaz) and do his workouts. If the gym had a track area, he’d walk around and jus think about life and whatever happened throughout his day.

• Now if Ayako tagged along with him to the gym one day… HES GONNA ACT A FOOL. Like he will literally just stand by her the entire time as if he’s her mf bodyguard. And if a man even TRIED to talk to her, he would instantly shoo him away 💀

• His productivity would also depend on who hes with 😂

• If he’s with his lil gang… they getting into BIG trouble. Those idiots would fool around and try and swing around the weightlifting bar and hit eachother with it. They’d cause a big commotion and then get escorted out the gym by mf security.

• I think he’d go alone alot lowkey… especially after rehabilitation, he’d go there to do light workouts to prepare himself for basketball practice.

• I f he doesn’t know how to properly use a machine, this mf is NOT ASKING NOBODYYY for help 💀. Like he will stand there and stubbornly try messing with it until either he figures it out, or one of the gym’s staff sees him and offers him help

• I feel like he’d be very popular with the elderly people at the gym. Like in the mens’ locker room, the old men would look at him and be like “Back in my day, I was a lot like you, son,” and be hyping him up on his muscles and big build. AND HE’D ACT ALL OVERCONFIDENT but he’d lowkey be smiling about it for the rest of the day. He’d smile and make a peace sign whenever he sees one of the elderly regulars there. And if they asked him for help, he’d help!!!!! He’d have a whole community of uncles and aunties at the gym

• In terms of people around his age tho.. it’s a different story. If someone is using a machine or area he’s trying to use, he’s gonna be SOOO inpatient. Especially if whoever is on it isn’t using it. If it’s a girl, he’d ask politely, but if it’s a guy, he’ll mean mug tf outta them, until they get intimidated and walk away 😭

• If he and Ryota are at the gym together, those two will take SO many pictures. Half of the time they’d jus be talking and talking, and wouldn’t get ANYTHING accomplished

• Ok, one thing about Mitsui, he is NOT going to the gym alone. Like he will hit the whole mf team up and ask them to go with him. Even Akagi.

• I think he’d go frequently though, especially in order to build up his stamina. Rukawa would show him the Stairmaster machine and he’d go CRAZY on there. Like by the end, it’ll say he walked up 200 flights of stairs 😂

• He’d lowkey have so many gym crushes. But he wouldn’t approach ANY of them 😂😂😂. He will just admire, sigh, and then go on with his workout. I think some of the gym baddies would think he’s cute but they wouldn’t approach him

• The reason why he’d be scared of being alone at the gym is because it’d be jus him and his thoughts. AND FOR MITSUI, THATS SCARY ASL. However… I think going to the gym alone from time to time would end up being a way for him to destress and reflect.

Hey there Tumblr, long time no see! I'm currently working on another essay about dialogue in Slam Dunk. Will probably finish it in a week or so.

I also finished this drawing of Pyonkichi Fukatsu Kazunari not long ago. I've got a long way to go, but I'm still proud of myself for completing him :)

We will be getting lots of gifs from the movie soon since the DVD is going to be released in like 2 days in Japan (? if I remember correctly). Hope to see a lot more Slam Dunk content from everyone !

Thanks for your ask and I'm happy to hear that you like my stuff! Sorry I haven't been active these days since I'm so busy with other stuff and it's hard enough already to keep up with my other social media accounts lol.....

But I will be writing another essay on Inoue's use of dialogue very soon. It's such a shame that the English speaking community largely ignores this masterpiece just because it's a sports manga. I really don't know how to persuade my animanga gang to give it a try. At one point, I even begged them, but their reaction to it is still lukewarm at best.....sigh....

Younger animanga fans do know of Haikyuu!! or Daiya no Ace for example, even Free! for goodness' sake! but they refuse to read Slam Dunk cuz the animation is outdated. Goddamn, sometimes I just want to pull my hair out arrggghhhhh

An Analysis on Sannoh

"There are quite a few reasons why Shohoku’s battle against Sannoh is undeniably an iconic “final boss fight” of sports genre. Being the greatest match of the whole series, the game is jam packed with intense moments of thrilling actions, as well, it showcases Inoue Takehiko’s masterful portrayal of character developments and interactions. In this short analysis, I would like to focus on another aspect which contributes to the greatness of Shohoku vs Sannoh showdown, that is the biggest differences between the two teams."

My thoughts on The First Slam Dunk part 2

NOT spoiler-free

So I said the movie was really well thought out in part 1, Ryota's backstory gives his character a lot of depth and also brings us a new understanding of his struggles. I like how Inoue portrays his relationships with other regulars in the movie as well (Hanamichi, Akagi, particularly Micchi, and even Yasuda)

But then, Rukawa stood out like a sore thumb.

Before I saw the movie, I did read some spoiler-free reviews on Twitter and Tumblr. And a lot of people complained that Rukawa didn't have a lof of screen time, which struck me as odd cuz I didn't think so at all. But then, after I sat with it for a few days, I finally realized what the problem was.

It was because there is zero chemistry between Miyagi and Rukawa. Now in the manga it makes sense since Rukawa doesn't talk to anyone, and this also serves as a subplot for the story (that Shohoku, as a team, has to learn to work it out to improve their tacit understanding). We understand who Rukawa is THANKS TO Hanamichi's pov. Because Hanamichi is the protagonist, we see very clearly what Rukawa is trying to say (to Hanamichi), why he says it that way (Hanamichi is dumb), why he does certain things (to help Hanamichi)

But because Hanamichi isn't the protagonist in the movie, Rukawa is alienated in Ryota's pov (Rukawa and Ryota really have no chemistry lol). They tried to add ONE conversation between the two, however, this conversation does very little (in which Ryota only says that he wants to see Sawakita's face when he's defeated, and Rukawa says, me too). It cannot be compared what Ryota/Akagi or Ryota/Micchi share. So an audience might have a hard time connecting with Rukawa ("he's barely in it" simply because he doesn't contribute much to Ryota's story).

Of course he does have the final showdown with Sawakita, but this is cut down to bare minimum (which is understandable, the movie can't be 5 hour long). All of important stuff about how he has to learn to pass is left out (the kind of player he was prior to joining Shohoku, his conversation with Sendoh, AND him asking coach Anzai for an advice). Not only that, his smile (Sawakita's smile for Rukawa as well) was changed (I will talk about this in part 3 or 4). These two smiles are actually SIGNIFICANT but because the movie has to focus on Ryota so we don't get to see the importance of Rukawa and Sawakita's smiles for each other.

In short, Rukawa is the one that suffers the most from this change in pov because he is the deuteragonist counterpart TO the protagonist Sakuragi Hanamichi, and not Ryota or any other character.

My thoughts on The First Slam Dunk (part 1)

So this is long overdue lol, I saw the movie about 2 months ago but I've been too lazy to write anything. It's semi spoiler-free but I may go off on a tangent, just a heads-up.

At first I was skeptical of the colors and how Ryota always had the most screentime on the trailers (lol, I did not expect that he's the protagonist of the movie!) But really, everything looks great, like all 'em boys look SO FUCKING HOT. Inoue Takehiko knew what he was doing lol. And their movements look semi-realistic too! I was mindblown by the way they walk, wipe their sweat, high five, run, score etc. I really love how it feels just like a real match, Inoue nailed it when it comes to the pace of the game !

Regarding the story, you can see VERY clearly how Inoue has matured as a storyteller. it's fascinating! He deployed A LOT of symbolism and subtext in this movie (I will be writing an essay or two about this later). Ryota's backstory is well written, and actually, his backstory bridges the gap between the movie and the manga quite well too. I like how we get a glimpse of his relationship with Akagi (before Mitsui returns, and Rukawa, Sakuragi join the team), and especially his interactions with Mitsui, how Ryota and Mitsui are too busy dealing with their own pains, so they forget about others' struggles and vent their frustration out onto one another.

Ryota's backstory really did him justice. I do think the movie did a good job of helping the audience connect with/relate to him at least. On my sixth viewing, I was even emotional near the end of the movie, when he gives his mother the red wrist band.

I have a lot more to say, but I think I will stop here for now. Perhaps I will talk about the biggest minus of the movie in part 2

Hye. first of all, I want to say thank you for sharing your analysis on SD. you give me lot of insight and details that I didn't notice in the manga. I really enjoy every bit of your analysis. I just want to ask, ahh this is so embarrassing but what is your rank of flower boy in SD? so far, I realised that Mitsui (pre-injury), Fujima, Sendoh and obviously Rukawa have their fangirl moment in the manga and anime. imo fujima should have more fans bcs dang, that boy is too beautiful!

Hanagata but tbh, I find all them boys to be good looking lol Like Mikio is so, so sweet and he looks so cute too!! I just wanna pinch his chubby cheeks !!
