SeniorVRLife is an ongoing thesis MFA graphic design project. This project will focus on seniors who are isolated or have mobility issues, and the people who support these seniors. The outcome of this project is to help seniors get access to VR and expand their experience of the outside world. Hers is the process web of this project.

Week 9: Poster 03 & Magazine 03
At this week 9, I started to work back on my event poster process. One of the big problems of my event posters is that the graphic element is too controlling. Thus, I need to add more diversity to my poster.

I decided to use different colors and different position to show some different and diversity in my series of event posters.

Week 8: Billboard 01 & Logo Refinement
This week I began to refine my project logos and decided to work on the billboards. Before I decided to refine my logo, I decided to do some research on logo design first.
What makes a good logo? A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic, simple in form and conveys an intended message.
Simple
Memorable
Timeless
Versatile
Appropriate

After Process 01, I decided to use circle and triangle as the graphic element of my logo. Thus, I designed more visual development to see how the logo might look like.

The reason that I decided to design a series of billboards is to promote this project to the public and let more and more people can connect VR with seniors.

Week 7:  Magazine 02
From last week’s critique, I found out that my magazine is really busy for seniors to read. Thus, in this round, I decided to reduce some useless details and use just one column for the body text. This time, I tried to make the design looks cleaner with better hierarchy.
Also, in this week, I began to think about how universal design can be applied to my project.
What is Universal Design?
Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. An environment (or any building, product, or service in that environment) should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the population. It is a fundamental condition of good design. If an environment is accessible, usable, convenient and a pleasure to use, everyone benefits. By considering the diverse needs and abilities of all throughout the design process, universal design creates products, services and environments that meet peoples' needs. Simply put, universal design is good design.
—National Disability Authority (NDA)
Although the universal design is usually be applied to the environment design or product design, I was thinking about how to make graphic design appropriate for seniors to use and look beautiful.

Week 6: Poster Process 03 & Magazine 01
From last week’s critique, I chose the Moodborad 02 as my visual system direction. In this week, I decided to refine my event posters and also apply the visual system on my other deliverables, for example, the magazine.
What is good design?
“An honest design communicates solely the functions and values it offers. It does not attempt to manipulate buyers and users with promises it cannot keep.”

Week 5: Poster Process 02
01/ MoodboardFrom last week critique, My posters look too obvious for audiences. Thus, I needed to switch my thought to find a way that can express the idea abstractly but also easy to understand.

I watched <Abstract: Art of the Design> this week and began to think about how graphic design can relate to abstract. I think I need to push myself further to find a way create more abstract works.

Week 4: Poster Process 01
This week we began to design the first posters. Because I have two moodborads for my thesis. Thus, I needed to design two visual directions to see which one looks better. For the first moodborad, I designed 3 different approaches to see which one looks better. For the second moodborad, I also designed 2 different approaches.
WHY SHOULD YOU USE A DESIGN PROCESS?
Having a design process allows us to be more efficient and transparent when we are designing an app. Since we have a plan laid out that has been tested and refined, we can make sure we’re always moving forward and not having to retrace our steps, and the client will trust the decisions and suggestions that we are making. There is a lowered risk because we’re using a plan that is tried and true — no guesswork needed. This plan also helps to keep all members of different teams on track and able to collaborate easily. When we work this way, it helps us find solutions for problems you might not even realize are there. This forces you to think through an app in its entirety, and makes sure the user is getting an engaged user experience. In the end you will have an app that works well, is easy to use, and is something the user wants to use over and over.

Week 2: Personas & Moodboard
In this week, I began to analyze my target audiences. Thus, I decided to make 5 personas card to identify my target audiences.
Personas are vital to the success of a product because they drive design decisions by taking common user needs and bringing them to the forefront of planning before the design has actually started. Personas provide the team with a shared understanding of users in terms of goals and capabilities.

I also began to design some Moodboard for my thesis visual development. In this week, I found multiple Moodboard to explore my thought further. While I was finding Moodboard for my thesis, I also start to think what kinds of visual language can work better for seniors.

Week 01: 2018 Spring Thesis 2 Schedule
At the first week of my thesis development, I planed the final timeline and millstone for each deliverable of my thesis project.
Tumblr media
My thesis project is about Virtual Reality (VR) and seniors.
As the famous actor George Burns said: “You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old.” So what can help seniors to enrich their life?
Virtual reality or VR is a good choice. There are many reports and research shows that VR can help seniors to enrich their lives. For example, The New York Times reports learning new technology skills help seniors lessen isolation. The MIT News reports that VR can help seniors who can’t leave the house to build a fun way to re-experience the world again.
In the thesis project “SeniorVRLife”, the first target audiences are seniors who are isolated or have mobility issues. The secondary audience is people who support these seniors, and this audience includes their children, grandchildren and care providers. The main goal of “SeniorVRLife” is to build a bridge between seniors and VR. “SeniorVRLife” will achieve the goal in three ways. The first way is to promote the awareness about the advantages of VR. The second way is to help seniors select the appropriate VR content suited for their taste and needs. In this way, it can make sure they can have a unique and wonderful user experience. The last way is to get seniors involved in VR programs and motivate their interested. With a few of design possibilities, “SeniorVRLife” can expand this amazing field to seniors and enrich their lives.
Virtual reality is a technology that could actually allow you to connect on a real human level, soul-to-soul, regardless of where you are in the world.
