“Work” day // jjk & ksh

Knocks echoed through the hallway of the apartment building as Seolhyun paced in front of a room on the fourth floor. It was a few days after Jungkook released a stunning single, so she wanted to surprise him with something other than unplanned-performances. (She knew those sucked.) After an unusually long hunt, she had found her friend’s manager and asked what days he had off. He was actually supposed to have a performance today, but after a ton of begging, she’d convinced his manager to give him a day off.

But the thing is- Jungkook didn’t know.

It was around 6:00am when Seolhyun had arrived at the building; she wore a large hoodie with her hair tucked into a cap and a face mask. She also held a clipboard in one hand and had a black (and fake) walkie-talkie in the other.

When his door swung open, she quickly cleared her throat and looked down, trying to hide her face. Getting her voice as deep as it could get, she greeted him, “Hello, Jungkook. Are you ready for your schedule today?”

As soon as Seolhyun stepped into the shiny building, she already felt dread. Dread for the job, dread for the costumes, mostly dread for the person in charge. Her heels clicked on the clean floors as she made her way to the customer service desk.

“Hey- yeah. I’m supposed to be a guest star for a future show? Do you have any idea where the rehearsals take place?” She asked, trying her best to smile at the receptionist. After all- it wasn’t their fault that the owner of the theatre was none other than her worse rival. Seol didn’t even know if Yoori even counted as a rival. Yoori didn’t seem to know the rivalry even existed.

Making her way to the vocal rooms where Yoori was supposedly at, Seolhyun sighed. She simply needed to survive the next few months. She’d only agreed to participate in the musical (or whatever it was- she forgot.) because of the offer that she would get a break from her hectic idol schedule. It was an easy yes at first- but now she was wondering whether or not she’d be able to stand a few months with the girl.

Knocking on the room’s door, Seol called from behind it, “Yoori? Are you in there? I’m here.”

Seolhyun had been sitting quietly in her room on one sunny day when the most brilliant idea seemed to pop into her head. Okay, so maybe not the most brilliant, or brilliant at all, but it was something she felt the need to do with her dear mom-friend. 

That was how a beaming Seolhyun and a sulking Juhyun ended up sitting in an empty restaurant- in the busiest section of Seoul. 

“Lighten up Ju,” Seol smiled, taking bites from the pancake she ordered. “It’s been like- what- a billion years? Since you even stepped outside.” She made a wide gesture with her arms, “See, no one’s even here,” She started, as the door opened and a small group of adults walked into the area. Seolhyun pulled her arms back toward her, laughing nervously.

As a matter of fact, Juhyun did say that ‘someone was going to bust their asses any minute now’, multiple times during the trip to the restaurant, but Seolhyun was having too much fun to care. She was amused at the older girl’s paranoia, being sure that nothing terrible could possibly happen.

“Juhyun, eat your food before it gets cold, I’m pretty sure the people coming in won’t notice.”

venturing into the city is a task in itself. seo juhyun has long learned that a harmless crowd can easily become overwhelming if she isn’t careful enough; an accidental glance, a smile to a passerby, not shielding her face in the second it takes for someone to recognize her. nothing’s quite as bad as having numerous phones pushed into her face at once, demanding some form of reward for their acknowledgement, when all she intends to do is go from a to b unnoticed. 

so truth be told, juhyun is usually reluctant in exploring her city. unless she’s covered head to toe, leaving little to no hint as to who lurks beneath the giant coat and baseball cap (how original, she’s aware), there’s no way she’s eager to set foot outside of her apartment. these are the precautions that must be taken, and it’s precautions she’s unwilling to part from as long as she remains in the public eye.

except life has a weird way of working sometimes— or more specifically, the people in it. a simple lunch could be had at home; private, separated from curious eyes and nosy individuals. it’s not as if seolhyun had to drag her away to a public place to a restaurant that’s currently empty, although it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong. 

“okay,” juhyun begins, clearly unimpressed as she eyes the other, suppressing the urge to throttle seolhyun right then and there. that wouldn’t do good for her image. “i still think that someone’s gonna bust our ass any minute now, as you’ve probably heard the whole time we got here.” 

the food before her remains untouched; her attention too focused on every time the door swings open, fearing it may just be the person who’ll expose them which will lead to a stampede rivalling that in the lion king. this rare day off isn’t meant to go like this, and she’s pissed.

“i’m still thinking that, by the way.”
