I really wish more movies would embrace a slice-of-life style. Forego or bury the plot, focus on the characters and the world. If you want a story, center it around the way two or more characters affect and influence each other.

I think that's why Only Lovers Left Alive is one of my favorite movies. It has a plot but you can completely miss it. What you can't miss is the level of depth given to every single person who so much as utters a word on screen. You're a visitor in their world.

I'd also really like to see more major films breaking "rules". A good example is the heavy use of voiceover in Arrival; it doesn't bring you out of the story, it pulls you further in.
