When I started this fic I knew it was a big undertaking, but sweet hells. The comments and messages I get of people re-reading this fic inspire me, warm my heart, and baffle me considering just how long it is becoming. Chapter 41 is already written, so I'm aiming to post that next Tuesday!

I’ve got a whole fanfiction written where I roll along with a character sheet through CR Campaign 2, and it’s like 39 chapters and counting. But so you don’t have to read that,

For the first time in almost a full year, I posted another chapter of my fic, Critical Playthrough on AO3–where I play along through Critical Role campaign 2 as my own character! It is surprisingly one of the only fics to have a named OC in Critical Role, so I’m proud to fill this niche.

How I Write Combat

My combat notes:

I have the initiative order at the top right. I roll and add Serasai’s bonus to see where she lands.

I have notes in the top left corner, in this case that Molly has +2 more health than in canon and Fjord has a spell slot to cast hex if he wanted to.

I have columns for each enemy in the fight, small one-word-two-word descriptions of each.

On the left side I write everyone’s actions on their turns. It they do damage to an enemy, I mark it on the table.

If there’s a surprise round, I write it out as normal and then draw a dark line under the last action to show where intitiative kicks in.

When someone KO-s an enemy I draw a dark line underneath the last attack as a cut-off, and I write KO! by the line of action.

When an enemy is KOed, if Serasai did damage to them before, I do some calculations to see if they would have died earlier in battle. If they would’ve, I give the KO to the correct character, and shift the following attacks to other enemies that are still standing.

In this fight, Fjord’s hex was something I had to keep track of, so I marked it on the chart. But if it happened in canon, then that’d be Travis and Matt’s job, and I wouldn’t have had to mark it down.

When Serasai attacks, I pause the show, and I roll and add what I would in a normal DnD game. I also check out the board onscreen to see where she would stand, what enemies are in range, flanking, etc.

I also usually swear at whoever onscreen goes after me as if they’re skipping my turn before I manage to pause it 😂
