Reached out to a biologist to request some info about an extinct species of freshwater shrimp and the email she sent in response was not only lovely and helpful but also kind of poetry to me? People who study invertebrates are actually the most hopeful and compassionate scientists that we have.

No tech CEO or NYT bestselling novelist will ever match the creativity of a humble French postman who decided on a whim to spend thirty-three years building a surreal, majestic palace with the bricks and mortar of his dreams.

I live in complete poverty and disability. Trying to make art to sell as prints as I am not getting commissions the way I used to. I am disabled and diabetic, immunocompromised from recent surgery, and I live in a traditional filipino house partially destroyed by storms and termites. I work 3 jobs, but they are all very unstable. Please please please, if you've ever derived joy from my art or insight from my posts or book recs, if you could pick up a print, send a tip, or subscribe to my patreon where I have 400+ exclusive drawings / early access, it would help keep me alive, in the most literal sense. I have been given a second chance at life, and I would like to keep living. Thank you so much

Let's play guess that deep-sea drifter! Can you tell what animal this is from the super-close-up view? 🧐 (Stay to the end of the clip to get the full view).

This species of jellyfish, Deepstaria sp., often has a bag-like appearance, no tentacles, and a bell that can open more than a meter wide. These jellies were named after the submersible DEEPSTAR 4000, where they were first observed intact in 1966. These large and fragile jellies can’t be collected effectively with nets but have been observed on over 30 dives in the last 25 years using MBARI’s remotely operated vehicles.
Surprisingly, this species is closely related to one of the most common jellyfish in the ocean, the moon jelly, Aurelia aurita. Deepstaria’s adaptations—extreme size, mesh-like digestive system, and lack of tentacles—are actually typical of several other deep-sea species in the same family. But Deepstaria has another amazing adaptation: it can pull the opening of its bell closed, like a giant kitchen trash bag to trap things inside.
