side note, I am sooo deeply obsessed with the reveal of John's love for Lilly as an explicitly nonromantic thing- as familial. I personally feel like that beautifully removed expectations of her owing John anything, and instead allowed her (accidental) gift to him to be just that: a beautiful gift of humanity. the way he feels about her is not something he expects her to return - after all, she is a stranger - it was a gift. she gifted him life, gifted him a name. she was instrumental in his birth into John Doe, and she owes him nothing for that. he loves her, yes, and she gave him a start, and that's enough.
