the importance of creating characters with flaws is not talked about often i fear. i feel like every fanfic or book i read are so chock-full of mary-sues that it makes it nearly impossible for me to enjoy it. just the other day i saw someone talking about how they were beginning to hate their characters because of 'imperfect' they were -- reading the post made me genuinely sad.

theres nothing wrong with imperfect characters. you're creating a skewed narrative if your characters are so perfect that nothing can ever go for them. make characters with flaws -- because its normal. flaws are a normal thing, and we shouldnt throw them to the wind just because its fiction.

im not saying that we should make our characters murderers or villains, but i dont want to read a book where a character bats her pretty eyelashes and all world conflict ceases, or the male lead is so attractive and nice that everyone falls for him. make them mean, or anti-social, arrogant, impulsive and reckless, so on. it makes the characters more relatable, makes the conflict more realistic, makes the plot more interesting. a character without flaw is more unrealistic than the magical worlds we're putting them in.
