So I finally finished 'The Rules of Attraction'.
And it's really interesting how different Patrick comes across in this one chapter written from his perspective. He seems like this serious person who has his life put together, who is the reasonable one unlike immature Sean.
His internal monologue doesn't show signs of turmoil and anxiety – he isn't so detached from reality yet.
And it's funny (but also sad) to compare it to the part where Sean makes his appearance in American Psycho.
Patrick flexing (lying) about being acquaintances with Trump just to impress his younger brother; once again humiliated that everybody but him can get a Dorsia reservation, too. His mental state is a mess and he admits to it.
I mean, that all makes sense considering this book was written before American Psycho, before Patrick became really himself as a fleshed out character.
But also P & P and the Yuppie lifestyle must have been fucking him up so much worse in only a couple years.
(I somehow was under the impression he's been working there for much longer. But he only graduates from Harvard in 1986, and the events in American Psycho take place from early 1988 to 1990.)

zoology is so fucking funny. what do you mean we’ve never seen a baby great white shark. what do you mean we’ve never documented a single melanistic cougar despite it being entirely possible. I dunno man. Anyways a new amphipod was just discovered 92639273947294729 meters beneath the sea

I think one big reason why we don't consider the stars as important as before (not even pop-astrology anymore cares about the stars or the sky on itself, just the signs deprived of context) is because of light pollution.
Tumblr media
For most of human history the sky looked between 1-3, 4 at most. And then all of a sudden with electrification it was gone (I'm lucky if I get 6 in my small city). The first time I saw the Milky Way fully as a kid was a spiritual experience, I was almost scared on how BRIGHT it was, it felt like someone was looking back at me. You don't get that at all with modern light pollution.
When most people talk about stargazing nowadays they think about watching about a couple of bright dots. The stars are really, really not like that. The unpolluted night sky is a festival of fireworks. There is nothing like it.
