SOUTH EAST SALON 07 - RACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE
Monday, 29 June, 2020
“The child not initiated into the village, will burn it down to feel the warmth. “ – Jeff Fard referncing an ancient African Proverb
South East Salon 07 was a smash – a discussion around issues of race and social justice with a wonderful panel of activists, artists and operators to discuss this topic as well as the arts, regeneration, economic empowerment, safe spaces and more. Despite some technical difficulties it is safe to say it was our best online event yet, and possibly the closest possible version to the in-person Salons we had been having for the better part of a year.
Shereener Browne, founder of Orisun Productions and barrister, spoke about the need for leadership in our communities to bring people together. Keep up with Orisun on Instagram.
Yvonne Field, founder of Ubele Initiative spoke eloquently about the need for intergenerational programmes and intergenerational wealth development. Follow them on Instagram here.
South East London’s own Nicholas Okwulu, repping PemPeople had strong words about not taking no for an answer and how to work with councils to make opportunities for people to empower themselves. Watch PemPeople move from Strength to strength here and support their endeavours financially here.
Marketing and branding consultant and entrepreneur Ashanti Bentil-Dhue spoke about the need to promote Black owned businesses and how she does just that with EventMindPro. Learn more about EventMindPro here.
Brother Jeff, an activist and space holder in the Five Points District of Denver, Colorado in the US talked with other guests about how we can follow what is happening in the hotbed of Denver, Colorado, at the centre of the United States. Follow Brother Jeff on his Facebook page here and catch his show daily from 9PM London time. And support his grassroots efforts by making a donation here.
Marque Gilmore, the inna-most, a producer, percussionist and founding partner of the CLF Art Café, our host venue for the Salon, gave insights about how this conversation has been going on for a long time, harkening back to the Black Leaders ’73 event. He spoke about original music that is on offer through his platform, including an exclusive release that will incorporate the Salon discussion with his original music – Inner Saloni-ity. Make sure you visit his Bandcamp every other Friday, to ensure Bandcamp’s revenue share goes direct to the artist. We will be promoting this original work later in the week. Check the inna-most out on Facebook and Instagram. Last, we want to shout out the enigmatic Mickey Smith, who has preserved Peckham with the maintenance of CLF Art Café in the Bussey Building. Mickey and his team have been incredibly supportive of the Salon even though their priority has been to ensure the safety of their staff and that they can continue operating, just like thousands of small businesses throughout London in the face of a bungled response to COVID-19 by a racist, classist government. Love and hugs to Mickey and his crew. Thank you for hosting. Follow CLF Art Café and CLF Art Lounge for future events.
In closing, I would like to thank everyone who viewed the Salon, responded and gave us love online and in person. I always say, the Salon is bigger than one person. It is a global network of people with South East London at it’s centre. And we are at your service. Watch this space for upcoming Salons on storytelling, creators and their responsibility towards social change and something special devoted to the Deptford Docks and the hidden embarrassing historical link to the International Slave Trade. If you would like to be involved, please email us at [email protected] check us out on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Thank you for supporting the South East Salon.

SOUTH EAST SALON 06 - The Future of Fine Art in a Post-Pandemic World
Wow! What an incredible event. We had our 6th Salon on Monday evening, and 2nd online. W partnered with Nexus Creative, a private members club in Croydon.
We had a wonderful conversation about the future of visual artists and the creation, exhibition, marketing and sale of their artwork. We were blessed to feature the work of Ainsley Burrows, Roxanne Williams and Natasha Caruana, as well as arts practitioners Swakara Atwell-Bennett and Kimberly Knox.
Ainsley, while producing numerous collections of painted artworks, produces The Sweet Spot, with his partner Laurielle, which is a Black erotica event that is known worldwide. During the lockdown, they have been running weekly shows on Thursday nights. And South East Salon and Ubiquita Worldwide is producing preview of Ainsley’s Maroons Rebellion in the fall in Croydon. Roxamme Williams is a painter and entrepreneur who produces large scale portraits in brilliant colour. She produces Merging Inks across the globe, an interactive cultural event featuring live art. Natasha Caruana is a photographer, instructor at University of the Arts London and founder of Work Show Grow, which supports emerging artists with skills, mentorship and exhibition support. Swakara Atwell-Bennett, founder of Better Shared, is a curator who makes opportunities for artists of the global diaspora to market and sell their artworks to larger audiences. Swakara is also a member of Nexus Creative. Kim Knox is founder and CEO of Ubiquita Worldwide, Ainsley Burrows’ representation, and a movement of people from the worlds of fine art, fashion, film, television, music and theatre who converge around a common love of urban alternative lifestyle.

SOUTH EAST SALON 05 - WOMEN BEHIND THE SOUND
South East Salon held it’s 5th Salon this week, the first online. The theme was Women Behind The Sound, following plans in conjunction with Ubiquita Worldwide to programme shows at CLF Art Lounge. Because of the pandemic we were unable to hold the Salon in person. However, after consulting long-time supporter Disentangle Productions - NORM! - we decided to hold the Salon online, hosted by the Upper Norwood Hub’s Facebook page.
The event was a successful first attempt to have this event in an online space. featuring five wonderful artists that fit the theme and hosted by Emma Warren, author, with a guest appearance by Kimberly Knox, founder of Ubiquita Worldwide. Norman, Emma and Kimberly have been early supporters of South East Salon. So it was only natural that they each play a part. Norman, handling the Zoom platform with grace, Emma, bringing her hosting skills to the fore and giving everyone equal time and space and Kimberly adding a realistic perspective about how we connect ,what we need and what we happen next.
The artists were a great mix of genres and voices. Saint Rose, a Brazilian-based singer songwriter duo, currently living in Deptford; Griot Chinyere, a brilliant storyteller; Jasmin Rodgman, a producer and composer who’s next project explores climate and migration. Death In Gloria, a rock singer/songwriter who also brought her tech skills in producing the ting. And Kimberly Nichole, former contestant on the Voice US, current superstar gracing the stage at CLF Art Lounge and who now has a song featured in Self Made: Inspired By The Life of Madam C.J. Walker.
The conversation was beautiful, the topics eclectic, yet relevant. The stories that generated from these wonderful minds fit to inspire and teach and spread the love that is need as we all make sense of what is happening around the world. We heard about how I am because we are. That we should move fast and fail first. We discussed the light at the end of the tunnel. We discussed funding opportunities and how the technology is simply a stepping stone - that the quill was once a piece of tech that took some understanding.
I am thankful to everyone who took the time to make this happen. It was a truly unique experience and one we will definitely replicate again. And we will put out short clips of the event on Instagram periodically over the next few days. Thank you for supporting South East Salon.

SOUTH EAST SALON
South East Salon is a physical network that connects people who are interested in celebrating this vibrant sector of the capital by elevating inventors, creators and entrepreneurs. The Salon is an opportunity to connect creativity and enterprise with resource; a platform for the burgeoning, unknown or hyper-local.
We are a warm hug on a Monday night, a comfy couch in the front lounge. we are a clearinghouse for creativity and access. Taking the links offline and into the living room, The Salon is a place to share vision, creation and stories, getting support from like-minded folks and potential clients and customers.
South East Salon is an opportunity to come together on a Monday evening to stay connected and remind ourselves of what we have in common, what makes us unique - and how the ‘tween can meet to accomplish great things.
Each Salon takes place in a location that offers something special - a piece of home, familiarity and comfort. When you enter, you will have a small bite and ample introduction to people you may have never met, but who will enrich your life, your work, your passions. Each gathering is a collective opportunity to stay connected to the hyper-local as we navigate changes to the global.
A few words from Jason, creator of South East Salon:
“I created South East Salon because connecting people is in my blood. My parents spent their careers empowering marginalised people all across America and because of this, I was always moving, always the new kid and constantly hosting. I blame them for my ability to connect and include people. From Seattle to Washington, D.C to Chattanooga, Tennessee to Denver, Colorado to Brooklyn to lewisham, my network is deep and diverse.
My professional career has been centred at the intersection of government, cultural institutions and community engagement, with a keen awareness of how to make a space or experience pop. Lucky enough to land in South East London at a pivotal time a decade ago, I am blessed to live in and serve a community that is not only familiar, but one whose changes are keenly familiar.
Every day I hear about a new thing - movie theatre, work space, community group, development - all the while speaking to people who’re unfamiliar to one another yet doing amazing things in their circles. I aim to connect these people in a physical space where we can comfortably build, make connections and thereby enact social change, build personal professional agency and grow our individual and collective enterprises.
My goal is to grow this network so that it becomes a destination for people seeking to develop their ideas further and get safe and positive feedback, a customer base, funding and support.I want South East Salon to be the best night in the diary and one that is coveted by those who seek to stay connected. I want the elected officials, the developers, the influencers to come calling, to be on the waiting list. And I want South East Salon to be the access point for those seeking to enter and eat off South East London, the greatest collection of communities I know.”
Follow the Salon on Instagram.
