Currently working on cleaning and coloring. Been referring back to this color script I made earlier, for things to keep in mind.

Rough color studies. Mostly focused on value but thinking about how to expand out of a monochromatic color scheme.

I always love RUDO Co.’s animated videos for SIAMÉS, and a lot of the edits in this one feel similar to how I envision my final project. The pacing is one of the first things that comes to my attention, with the way some shots linger and add to that sense of slow motion in the animation. It also uses a lot of medium and close up shots to draw focus to the characters’ expressions, as well as quite a few over the shoulder and POV shots that draw the viewer’s attention to what the characters are thinking. My focus is on character thoughts and emotions too, and I’d like to capture that similar sense of warped time.
“Summer Nights” features more characters than my project has, so it has wider shots overall, but I’d like to take some cues from the variety of camera angles. It has a lot of low angle shots to emphasize the characters feeling powerful and free, but also some hip-level and ground-level shots that vary the composition and build the space. It also has some high-angle shots and even a couple of overhead shots; it’s dynamic without feeling chaotic. I envision my project as being rather quiet, but I still want certain shots to feel powerful and dynamic, so it’s nice to see how they do it here to similar effect.

story splines
1. Once upon a time: there was a girl who went to college And everyday: she worked alone in her dorm room Until one day: she purchased a plush doll of her favorite character And because of that: she associated the plush with positive feelings And because of that: she felt a little less alone in her room And because of that: she grew very attached to the plush Until finally: the plush became a symbol of hope And since that day: whenever the girl started losing hope, the plush reminded her to hold on And the moral of the story is: the littlest things can have the greatest impact
2. Once upon a time: there was a girl who went to college And everyday: she struggled to make connections with people Until one day: she started to feel very alone And because of that: she purchased a small plush of her favorite character And because of that: she formed a very strong attachment to the plush And because of that: the girl questioned whether that character would really want to be her friend if they actually existed And because of that: the girl worked to become someone they would want to be friends with And because of that: the girl reflected a lot on what it meant to be a good friend And because of that: the girl realized that a good friend would like her for who she is Until finally: the girl stopped worrying about making connections and focused on being true to herself And since that day: the girl found it easier to make satisfying connections with people And the moral of the story is: fictional connections can be authentic and influential experiences
3. Once upon a time: there was a girl who went to college And everyday: she felt increasingly isolated and alone Until one day: she started having thoughts of dying And because of that: she sought solace in a plush toy And because of that: she formed a deep connection with the plush toy And because of that: the girl felt a little less alone Until finally: the dark thoughts went away And since that day: whenever the girl was feeling low, the plush would keep her grounded And the moral of the story is: inanimate objects can be important emotional anchors
4. Once upon a time: there was a girl who went to college And everyday: because she was insecure, she was very withdrawn Until one day: she grew isolated from her surroundings And because of that: she felt very alone And because of that: she purchased a plush of her favorite character And because of that: she grew very attached to the plush and clung to it for support And because of that: she questioned the validity of depending on someone fictional for support And because of that: she was forced to reconcile her shame over it with the reality of its substantial positive impact Until finally: she realized she needed to allow herself to feel her feelings and care about what she needed to heal, imagined or not And since that day: the girl stopped judging herself so harshly for her feelings and let herself be And the moral of the story is: your feelings are real, so as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody, it’s ok to need what you need and like what you like
