Yes this is EXCELLENT, all of it
I would argue that not only is Monkey consciously moving towards more substantial relationships- he is actively trying to learn to be a better person from them, too.
When he realized he couldn't beat Shadow Monkey, he slowed down and thought things through and was able to trick him into letting his guard down. He used his head instead of his fists, and not to turn every little thing into Tripkey, but when he says "it was all her fault" he's not talking about hypothetical failures or fates worse than death, he's talking about himself. Monkey is different now, compared to the version of himself that played at being guard to the Master all those years ago; he's smarter, he's better. He understands self sacrifice and the idea of something bigger than himself now.
And it's because of her. And Pigsy and Sandy, too, of course- but Tripitaka was the one who woke him up and dragged him into the quest and showed him what it really means to live for something other than yourself.
first season tripitaka versus second season tripitaka
So I’ve been thinking about how to put this into words.
It struck me that Tripitaka’s characterisation seems subtly different in season two. There’s a harder edge to her, and she’s a lot more practical and grounded, and seems a lot less willing to rely on Monkey. (She literally fights her own battles this time).
Which… actually makes a lot of sense, if you consider that for most of season one, she was trying to be Gaxin!Tripitaka, who had an insane level of faith in the gods.
It was only when she no longer felt compelled to live up to that impossible standard that she was comfortable showing more of her true self. And Tripitaka’s true self is not the kind of person to wait for other people to solve her problems. If we go by the first episode, she’s the type to take ugly reality by the hand, lull it to sleep and steal its stuff.

who has brain cells: tnlom edition
Tripitaka has her own brain cell, it's just that 60% of the time it's devoted to her trying to keep her gods (read: Monkey) from running off and doing something stupid, and the other 40% of the time nobody listens to her anyway. Including herself
Sandy also has her own brain cell but it's almost exclusively used for anxiety
Pigsy and Monkey share one. Pigsy has it most of the time and Monkey only borrows it to protect Tripitaka

There's only one way to destroy the Shadow Scroll. Fly it into the Sun.
No, Monkey, you can't.

I am. Fascinated by the decision to have Tripitaka be the one to chronicle their adventures this season instead of Sandy
Like, is it a retcon? Is this supposed to be a "whoops we decided we want Trip to be the one writing it down the whole time lol"?? Or is Sandy still writing her own (potentially different) version? Are we eventually going to see the rest of the party take up the mantle of recording the journey to the west? If so, will we eventually see them playfully bickering over whose version is the best/most accurate???
Is the series going to end with Monkey writing his own version of the story down and no longer being Monkey, 19, never learned how to read
