i am still not overjoyed with child severus snape being described to look at lily 'hungrily' or with 'undisguised greed' on his face. but i think i forgot about how jo was very very poor before she got her break with harry potter.

so if you read these moments with poverty in mind, 'greed' and 'hunger' come across a bit different now don't they? severus snape reeks of desperation and it makes me think of 'parasite' when thinking of 'greed.' it doesn't seem fair to describe him like that because someone wishing to change his situation and desiring something else isn't a bad thing. but it makes me think of the sentiment of the lengths people will go to just survive, hence 'greed'. it's all messy and nasty but that's what poverty does.

it's really easy to just view these words in a purely sexual way but it's a very thin reading and, honestly, lazy. i think severus snape ultimately showcases the uglier side to what really bad circumstance can do to a person. he's not palatable at all, so everyone short circuits when trying to understand his pov.

so it is fitting that harry is the person who ends up understanding. after all, we read book after book of harry wanting something so desperately. to have his parents. to escape privet drive. that's a craving. that's a hunger. harry himself is described to look at his family in the mirror of erised 'hungrily.' and when he sees lily using the deathly hallows, she looks at him 'hungrily' also.

“Potter, when I want nonsense shouted at me I shall give you a Babbling Beverage. And Crabbe, loosen your hold a little, if Longbottom suffocates it will mean a lot of tedious paperwork, and I am afraid I shall have to mention it on your reference if ever you apply for a job.”

I mean on the one hand the whole bit where Snape is enraged because he knows that somehow Harry helped Sirius escape is funny. On the other hand, it's actually pretty mean that Dumbledore is looking amused by his whole reaction and kinda mocks and gaslights Snape and is all 'but the door's been locked. think about what you're saying. it's impossible that they could've left...unless of course Harry and Hermione could somehow be in two places at once lololol.' Especially given that he knows why Snape is so upset and that it's not actually just a petty grudge or wanting to get Harry expelled.

It’s that time of the year when seasonal Harry Potter spreads very easily and I happened to catch it.

snape clutching lily’s letter in grimmauld place isn’t supposed to be a sweet moment where you’re overwhelmed by the romance of it all, it’s supposed to be an ugly moment in which a grief stricken man tried to find comfort in the words of a friend who died decades ago. it’s supposed highlight snape’s isolation, how being a spy cut him off from other people and now he killed his last friend and was truly alone.

Is Snape nice? No. Is he an absolute comedy icon with a flair for dramatic timing? Yes! I mean he literally stood there waiting and being insulted multiple times just to reveal himself at the perfect moment. We stan.
