The thought of a child accidentally seeing something of a gruesome nature through a phone screen alone is upsetting. The thought of a child witnessing something of that sort, even for a singular moment, is horrifying.

The knowledge that Gazan children have been endlessly living through unspeakable trauma for over 400 days now, waking up to it, falling asleep to it, experiencing it through themselves and through their loved ones is bleak beyond words. Nothing else seems to matter anymore beyond that.

Today I'm thinking of my friend Nader @abdelsalam1990 who is only 17. On the precipice of adulthood. One of many of an entire generation of Gazans who are growing up through this genocide. When he should be discovering more of the world and himself, pursuing his passions, studying new things, making memories, he is instead restlessly appealing to strangers on the internet for his family's sake because their lives depend on it.

Sex Worker Super Bowl Bail Out in New Orleans

Every year, around this time, the airwaves in whatever city is hosting the Super Bowl are flooded with public services announcements about sex trafficking. Billboards go up. Police officers receive special training. Media asks organizations that work to reduce trafficking to comment on the “biggest sex trafficking event of the year.”

There is no evidence that the actual volume of sex trafficking increases as a result of the Super Bowl. More importantly, we collectively try to make the point that the hype often leads to a damaging response - arresting people who are directly selling sex.

If ICE Shows Up at Your Door, Know Your Rights!

Do NOT open the door. ICE does not have the right to enter your home without a valid warrant signed by a judge.

Remain calm. Don’t run and most importantly do not lie about your name, age, immigration status, etc. Anything you say or do can be used against you.

Do not sign anything. Ask to have documents translated. If you do not speak English ask for an interpreter. Have an attorney look over any documents that ICE gives you.

Make a family plan. If you have children, identify a caretaker.

Record. If you witness someone being detained by ICE, you have the right to record as long as you do not interfere with the arrest. Pictures, videos, and any information you can gather, can help verify an immigration raid and also help someone’s immigration case.
