ok i have beef with this new elphie dress.
doing all monochromatic black looks bad on camera. in general you loose a lot of detail in an all black look when you aren't looking at it up close and in person.
the broadway version of this dress solved this problem in a really beautiful way that i wish they would have tried to replicate for the movie. i have had the honor of seeing the broadway costume in person in a museum and you can still see it if you zoom in- there is actually a lot of color and texture in elphabas dress. there's reds, greens, purples, oranges layered with various blacks. there are ruffles, sequins, lace so much layered together to give the dress dimension even if you are seeing it from the back row, but in a way that still mainly reads as black. after all black is not the absence of color but all of them at once.
all that to say there's no dimension to this new dress, it's flat and black and boring. but dimension seems to be lacking in much of this movie so 🤷🏼♀️
anyway i don't have anything as intelligent to say about ari's dress. it just looks like an AI generated pile of deli meat by zac posen for senior prom. (sorry zac posen i do love you)

I was thinking recently about how "alt" subcultures are so aestheticized now but they used to be much more about your societal views than the clothes you wore or even the bands you listened to, and my brain connected some dots. Idk if this is anything
