WOMEN OF THE RESISTANCE POSTER PORTFOLIO

San Francisco Poster Syndicate has teamed up with the artists of the Women of the Resistance mural in Balmy Alley to produce a portfolio that seeks to bring further awareness to the important fight of the activists represented in the mural. 

The portfolio complements the mural, which was completed in 2018, by creating screenprints of all 38 women portrayed. This project highlights this group of women who are powerful beacons of hope during these dark times and hopes inspire others to continue moving forward along their path of resistance.

The 38 screenprints in the portfolio includes one poster dedicated to each of the women plus a screenprint reproduction of the mural printed by Sun Night Editions. All prints in an edition of 20 were printed on Cougar Natural Smooth 100# Cover paper. The portfolio case is bound and designed by Sam Companatico with assistance from Asa Nakata, also has an explanatory graphic of the mural that shows who is represented, who the artist is and where the activist is in the mural. The portfolio is available for $350. Individual prints from the series will also be available at the exhibition for $45 each.

On Saturday Jan. 19th, over one hundred students, allies, and community members came out to a picket and rally to support a vote on unionization for adjuncts and lecturers at Santa Clara University. On the day when women marched around the world to support women’s rights, social and economic justice, and workers’ rights, faculty at Santa Clara University demonstrated outside of a black-tie fundraiser and demanded that they be allowed a voice and a vote. 

Students, faculty, and community members marched and chanted as over 2,000 donors ($10,000 minimum donation to enter the event) entered a private James Taylor concert in downtown San Jose. Many donors and faculty attending the event wore buttons inside the fundraiser in a show of solidarity. Particularly inspiring were the students who made sure that every donor who entered the event was confronted by SCU's failure to live up to its professed Jesuit values when it comes to how it treats its faculty. The rally featured speakers from the South Bay Labor Council, Silicon Valley Rising, the University of San Francisco's part-time faculty union, SCU's student body president, SEIU 521, and SEIU 1021. 

Non-tenured faculty at SCU have been fighting to win a vote on unionization since 2017. The administration has refused to partner with faculty to create the terms for a fair vote on unionization, instead insisting that faculty go through the National Labor Relations Board, a process that has been compromised by the Trump administration and its policies against workers. “A union will give us—adjunct faculty and lecturers—a meaningful voice at the bargaining table. We believe that holding this vote in-house would allow the university to live up to its Jesuit values. Granting adjunct faculty and lecturers this opportunity would demonstrate that SCU treats our voices with respect, which a lack of response to this reasonable call for a vote denies,” Madeline Cronin, Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Philosophy.
