Delivering Happiness
Now that the competition is coming to an end, how was your experience? How much do you know about the company prior to the competition, your initial impression and expectations, and how have these changed?
We started this competition without having much knowledge regarding SingPost except for thefact that it is a postal service provider. Though postal demand has been on thedecline, we are really impressed that SingPost has managed to diversify andinnovate itself to provide more ways of serving its customers. For examples, its foray into online shipping service via vPost, and also POPStation (Pick Own Parcal Station) as a new way for customers to pick up, pay or return their parcels securely at any time they want.
How has the process been? Is it something you expected?
Telling engaging stories though animated films is something we are experienced in but this is the first time we have the opportunity to work so closely with such an established company. It is definitely an exhilarating experience of being able to bring the rich and long history of SingPost to life.
When doing this project, we also challenged ourselves to go beyond our comfort zone. We started exploring print and exhibition designs, to see how we can convey the theme and concept of “Delivering Happiness” into something that everyone can experience.
It is definitely been a long and intensive learning journey for us, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work, passion and unlimited support from my two team members in Team IDM, our school NYP, School of Interactive and Digital Media (SIDM) as well as SingPost. Description of your finished product
We have created a short animation that chronicles the journey of SingPost and how it has been delivering happiness since the birth of Singapore to modern times. In addition, a set of postcards will be available for visitors to send for free, with postage included, to experience the joy of delivering happiness to their loved ones. They'll be able to customize it with stickers featuring characters in our animation or bring home a bit of the SingPost story with a limited edition button badge.
There'll also be more information and activities available at our exhibition booth so do come down to see more!

Delivering happiness, the theme and name of our project, is not only just about showcasing and telling the story of SingPost. We want to let everyone including you, our readers as well as our booth visitors to experience for themselves how it is like to be Delivering Happiness.

1. The oldest post office still operating in Singapore today is Geylang (opened in 1930). Today, SingPost is remodeling its post offices to serve the new generation of customers. Suntec City Post Office is one of the new concept post offices that integrate all key digital services under one roof.
2. Every day, a postman covers more than 35km daily. Altogether, postmen from SingPost cover more than 20,000 km in a day. In less than two days, they would have gone round the globe once.

3. SingPost processes over 3 million mail items a day. With more people shopping online, the number of mail packages has gone up over the years, so SingPost has invested in S$45 million new integrated sorting machines to cater to the changing mail profile.
4. SingPost’s vision is to be the regional leader in ecommerce logistics and trusted communications. It is building a S$182 million eCommerce Logistics Hub which will begin operation in second half of 2016.

SingPost provides brands such as adidas, Philips and Triumph with end-to-end ecommerce solutions including ecommerce technology, warehousing solutions, delivery and returns, regional customer care and performance marketing. It also runs its own online marketplace, Omigo. What does SG50 mean to me?
Having been a Singaporean for all my life, it is a proud moment for me to see my own country reach its jubilee year. Singapore has achieved, grown and been very successful in these 50 years. Being a part of this competition also reminds us all of the various people, ideas and determination that helped laid the foundation of our young nation. SG50 is a chance for us all to look back and celebrate how far we have come and also to unite ourselves and reflect on how we can help build the Singapore we want to be a part of.

Idealization and Visual Development
​Idealization
The first thing on the agenda is a topic and theme we found true with SingPost and wanted to show. After researching on SingPost, it came to us that SingPost has been delivering our mail consistently through the times, and has learnt to adapt to the changes of technology. This is why we chose “Delivering Happiness”.
At the beginning there were a few variations on the storyline. One of them was to have SingPost’s postmen walking through a growing Singapore to deliver a parcel, another one was to show how happy the community was to get mail from their postbox. In the end we concocted a combination that held the best parts in our story ideas!
Visual Development
With a solid idea and clear direction, we had to head back to research; this time to find an art style, one that is appealing and builds on our message. We also got down to trying out different looks for the characters, tweaking to improve the final look. Style guides were made so the look and colours would stay consistent throughout the animation, giving information from the type of tones to the shape of fingers.

Another important step were storyboards; putting down words into panels to give an idea on how the story will flow.

From there we also referenced these thumbnails to make the necessary backgrounds, characters and effects. It is no small number! We separated the elements to give more flexibility in terms of camera movement, and ready for animation.

Introduction to team IDM
We are Team IDM from NYP, School of Interactive & Digital Media. Team IDM consists of Andrew Chen Zhiquan, Marisa Yuen Xin and Javon Chan Yi Da, all third year students of Digital Media Design (Animation).
We enjoy storytelling through animation because it allows us many possibilities in executing our concepts and imaginative content while keeping the audience entertained and captivated.
All of us jumped on the chance to join this competition as we thought it would be a good opportunity for us to use our talent to showcase the growth of Singapore and important companies who have grown alongside with Singapore.
What is SingPost about?
We are delighted to be working with SingPost! SingPost is a company with a rich history and heritage that goes all the way back to 1819.
SingPost is a trusted household name, providing essential postal services and connecting people and businesses regardless of distance. With the emergence of new communication tools, demands for postal services have been declining worldwide. People are now able to communicate with each other at faster speed and lower cost.
SingPost moves with the times and adapts itself to the needs of customers. In addition to physical postal communications, it provides secure digital communications solutions. It also goes into the online shopping space. For example, it delivers online purchases from overseas to Singapore through vPost shipping service. It runs its very own own Omigo marketplace. It even sets up online stores for brands and manages the whole fulfilment process for them.
SingPost also provides convenience and meets lifestyle needs through its post offices and 24/7 self-help kiosks. They have POPStations for customers to pick up, post, pay or return their parcels. Their SAM machines enable customers to weigh packages, buy stamps and even pay their bills, etc. It also has mobile applications to for customers to track their parcels, find the nearest post offices, etc.
SingPost has greatly shown the Singapore spirit of “never-say-die”, persevering through the changing postal landscape and pushing the envelope with innovative products and services to stay relevant. More than a local champion in postal services, SingPost is also a regional leader in ecommerce logistics. It has been recognised locally and internationally for its excellent quality services, its push for innovations and its inclusive workplace initiatives.
What we hope to achieve
We hope to be able to tell the story of SingPost’s extraordinary journey and innovations alongside the history and growth of Singapore, reminding Singaporeans of the joy and positive emotions they experience with the service of SingPost
This is also an exciting opportunity for us to explore and understand more about one of Singapore’s well-known brands and also how they have contributed greatly to the growth of our country.
Gathering research
SingPost has a rich history and offers a wide range of products and services. There will be a lot of information for us to work with and it will be a challenge for us to showcase them all. As such, we will be focusing on how has SingPost grown with Singapore and also how their resilience and innovative efforts have benefited Singaporeans. We have met up with SingPost and will continue to work together in close partnership with them. We will also be visiting their post offices, facilities and possibly interviewing and getting long-serving employees involved in our production to gain a deeper and more complete understand of SingPost. Through all this research and information, we would be able to showcase the SingPost story through our storyline and production content.
