i think a fun way to interpret sa2 shadow is that he is Supremely Out Of It. the whole game takes place over the course of, what, two or three days? he JUST got out of being in the tube for 50 years (pointing at egghogs) following major trauma and brain scrambling. hes constantly getting triggered and having full and partial flashbacks. hes so distracted talking to rouge he casually calls her maria. theres no way he has a complete grasp on where he is or wjat hes doing. not to say he's entirely unaware, i just think he's going through all this in a haze of derealization + dissociation. hes still a funny little guy hes just not internalizing all this

also folds nicely into explaining his amnesia in heroes/shth. he didn't hit his head on reentry or anything, he just wasn't present enough to remember most of that ordeal anyway.
