Okay I am angry and frustrated so let me just get this out now:

I am not here to hold your hand while you scroll through the app.

The amount of posts I have seen these last few weeks make me so angry and I really could not put my finger on it why but I think I know now: Stop coming for content creators.

I have seen many different posts by different people across different fandoms always talking about one issue or another (some of them absolutely justified, some of them ridiculous) and they were all in some form or another blaming content creators for content that an OP had consumed but did not want to consume. Be it OP does not want you to write about character xyz or not about a triggering concept unless the creator themselves had experienced a similar thing or they want you to write more/less smut in a fandom and I am so so sick of it all.

The following functions are genuine tools for you to use to make your tumblr experience better:

unfollowing/blocking an account

blocking certain tags

asking an account to tag a certain trigger.

But what you cannot do is complain about the lack of content in a fandom and then also shame authors who do not produce the content you want to read.

An example: I write smut. I like writing smut. And I will continue to write smut until this hell site will perish in the fires of the internet and no sooner than that. Making elaborate posts about how there is “too much” smut in fandom will only achieve one thing: People do not post smut. But they will not suddenly start posting fluff/angst/whatever genre you want because they stopped writing smut. The only thing you will have achieved is that there is less content.

The amount of asks I have gotten about how I write smut and should start writing more “real” stories is sickening and frustrating and just because we have apparently now stopped comparing creators to nd does not mean we should start comparing authors to other authors (some of which I know personally so fuck off, ‘kay?)

The same goes in a reversed setting or with different aspects as well. There is discourse that is important and needs to be had but there is also an entitlement that makes me sick to my stomach. You cannot make long callout posts again and again and expect the fandom to mould the way you like. That is not how real life works and we should all be mature enough to recognize that we are responsible for our own content consumption. Do not like something? Don’t fucking read it. Read the tags (if something is not tagged properly, reach out to the author) and then just unfollow if you think the content is not for you.

What we are not going to do is read my (or anyone’s stuff) and suddenly try to hold it against a moral or quality standard that you invented for the fandom and try to make me abide by it because hell no.

Maybe you aren’t annoying, maybe they were just annoyed. Maybe your entire personality can’t be boiled down to actions others found disruptive. Maybe peoples feelings are subjective views of you, not objective. The same way we teach kids to say “I feel angry when you do this thing” instead of “you made me angry!” maybe you should consider that people, due to their own personal beliefs about social interaction, felt annoyed in response to your actions but that that doesn’t necessarily mean you did something bad or are something bad. And while its sweet that you want to make sure people don’t have negative feelings, there’s a lot of humans in this world and we’re always going to be stepping on each others toes so maybe don’t let people feeling annoyed with you define you.
