Abstract
Nowadays Indian drama serials are very popular in Bangladesh. Young, old even children are interested to watch these serials. These people watch and imitate the life style portrayed in these daily soaps. This is gradually destroying our prolonged and enriched cultural norms and values. This study reveals that these Indian drama serials provoke sexual behavior, instigate pre and extra martial affair, educate criminal activity, rouse eve teasing, and nurture conflict between family members. This study also discloses that these daily soaps impose Hindu culture in every sphere of life of Bangladeshi people. This study was carried on 100 families of Dhaka city corporation area on the basis of random sampling. At the end the paper suggests some remedial measures that are indispensably needed to save our viewers from the negative consequences of Indian drama serials and stop cultural intrusion.
Introduction
Drama is a unique tool to explore and express human behavior, feeling, and emotion. It highlights the picture of a society in a dramatic style which seems to a spectator or viewer that he is performing himself as Shakespeare quoted ‘All the world's a stage’ (As You Like It 2/7), “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players”. However, drama serial is one of the most popular forms of entertainment for all age group what can be defined as series of television programs and radio programs that rely on a continuing plot that unfolds in a sequential episode by-episode fashion. Serials typically follow main story arcs that span entire television seasons or even the full run of the series, which distinguishes them from traditional episodic television that relies on more stand-alone episodes. (Wikipedia, 2012). It consists of series of events having vivid, emotional, conflicting, or striking interest or results (Dictionary.com:2012). Indian Drama originated and developed from storehouse of Sanskrit in India. Indian drama has given its incredible impact and limit to perfection (Mirsha, 2012). Nowadays Indian drama serials (Hindi and Indian Bangla) have become the most popular entertainment in our country and it is getting more popularity. A good percentage of our population now watches Indian drama serials. Young and the old even the children are also interested to watch it. The family is hardly found where these serials are not viewed regularly. These viewers are blindly following the Indian culture what are portrayed in these serials. It is destroying our culture, values, beliefs and traditions. Bangladesh is the second largest Muslim majority country. Around 90% people of Bangladesh are Muslims which influence its culture and history (Bangladesh.com, 2012). Likewise, Hinduism is the dominant faith in India, practiced by over 80% of the population (Asian Info, 2010). It is evident that, Islam and Hindu are not only two religions but also two social orders. Because, their eating habit, clothing, speaking, script, sculpture, in a word, their entire culture is totally different. Bangladesh is a Muslim majority country mentioned above but her population is losing their local culture gradually due to Indian drama serials (Mirsha, 2012).
Literature Review
Datoo (2010) examined, these daily opera texts portray such images where a woman may have multiple relationships during her lifetime. Apart from the above, both locally and globally produced TV commercials expose females as highly contributing members, both, at home and at places of work and also show men as subordinate. Thus the image of the woman is represented as self-sufficient, confidant and an opposite equal to men a depiction that often comes into conflict with the local gender-based social structures.
Ruwandeepa (2011) identified, modern fashions and beautiful actors have become the most attractive items in these dramas for 40% of women. They tend to select the same fashion that they see in these dramas while they do shopping. The counterpart that has created about women by these dramas is a very artificial one. It emphasizes to clad with very nice clothes if you are a woman. The counterparts of women in these tele dramas are similar to artificial dolls. One woman respondent said that her grandmother whose age is 74 is getting ready for a tour to India and is trying to find a similar sari that is worn by Tulsi at “Mahagedar”.
Anthony (2011) found much stringer culture which was presented in a vivid way highly adoptable and often admirable in the Indian drama serials. Majority of women responded the attraction toward hair style dress and dishes presented and worn by Indian models and tired to do and look the same way. With dish antenna society was adopting new ways trends and lifestyle.
Butt (2005) pointed out in his research that the same operas directly and indirectly are giving maximum coverage to Hindu religion through the projection of names of gods and goddness, religious verses, religious words and history, different scenes in religious background, sounds and prayers. The researcher indicated that the projection of religion is some times the requirement of the scene but most ot the time the religious projection of Hinduism is unnecessary.
Anwar (2005) observed that the people who actually see these shows are delusional, because what these serials show are too far fetched. They are all basically the same. It is manipulating the minds of the people in our country, and as a result, India is only gaining more money. Instead of people utilizing their time, and engaging in productive activities, people indulge in this mindless drive. Indian T.V shows hardly give Bangladeshi shows a chance. He added " These shows are not in tune with reality, they are not only impractical, but are inappropriate for young children who have impressionable minds."
Morshed (2012) suggested that, we are moving away from our traditional belief and values and so every now and then we are facing numerous problems in our family and society due to addiction to Indian drama serials. But we need to be aware of such a critical situation. We must spot buying ideas from Indian serials and should not imitate the actors. We must not try such attitude in our lives. The more we will be involved in Indian serials the more we will face difficulties in our personal life.
Objective of the Study
The main objective of the paper was to identify the main subject matter of Indian Drama serials and measure its long terms effect on Bangladeshi family system. The study also included some additional objectives such as:
• to know the people’s perception toward Indian drama serials
• to find out some disorganizations of these serials that differ from our local culture
• to suggest some possible solutions to prevent negative consequences resulted from Indian drama serials.
Research Question
In order to serve the purpose of the study the respondents were asked following questions during interview:
What is the main subject matter of Indian drama serials?
How are these drama serials affecting the family system of Bangladesh?
Materials and Method
This study followed both quantitative and qualitative methods on the basis of primary and secondary data. Because, a quantitative component of a mixed research assumes the usage of deductive scientific method while qualitative component assumes inductive scientific method. Moreover, a quantitative approach collects quantitative data based on exact measurement applying structured as well as validated information collection. For instance, rating scales, closedended items and responses (Articlebase, 2007). Personal information especially democratic aspects were identified through quantitative method whereas qualitative method was used to know the in-depth information regarding Indian drama serials using introspective approach. As the main purpose of the study was firstly, to know the main subject matter of these drama serials and secondly, to measure its long terms effect on Bangladeshi social system, this interview took place in two stages. In the first stage the researcher tried to know the main subject matter and in the second stages the researcher endeavored to know the long term effects of Indian tele serials on Bangladeshi social system. Data were accumulated from five significant areas of Dhaka city corporation on the basis of purposive sampling namely Mirpur, Agargaon, Taltola, Firmgate and Tejkunipara. Later on, twenty (20) respondents from each area were selected snow ball sampling (especially who are fond of these drama serials) and total one hundred (100) people were interviewed. The significant statements of the interviewer were tape recorded by the interviewer which was interpreted in verbatim method. Besides, secondary data were collected from national and international books, articles, newspapers, published and unpublished thesis, and browsing internet.
Indian Drama Serials: Source of Entertainment or Social Degradation?
Entertainment is something that is for fun, enjoyment or relaxation. In that sense, Indian drama serials are definitely entertaining (Morshed, 2012). Due to increasing number of Indian channels and television networks, people have acquainted themselves with different kinds of daily operas. These Hindi drama channels are easy to access: Star Plus, Zee TV, Sony, Colors and Star One, Life OK and some Indian Bangla drama channels Star Jalsa, Z Bangla, ETV Bangla are popular among the people of Bangladesh. Among the drama serials ‘Saath Nivana Saatia’ Is pyer ko keya naam Du’, ‘Ek hajaro mai mere bahna hai’, ‘Ye rishta keya kehlatahe, ‘Payer ka dard hai’ and ‘Bir ki bira’ telecasted on Star Plus, ‘Love marriage ya arrange marriage’, ‘Muskan’, ‘Parwarish’, ‘Kuch to loke kahenge’, ‘Bari acchi lagtihai’ ‘Keya hua tera wada’ telecasted on Sony, ‘Rashi’ telecasted on Z Bangla, ‘Ma’, ‘Tapur tupur’, ‘Care Kori na’, ‘Sangshar sukher hoy romonir gune’, ‘Achol’, ‘Binni Dhaner Khoi’ telecasted on Star Jalsha are very popular among all ages specially women and young generation. These serials are not only a source of entertainment but also show fatal family problems. As people very carefully follow these serials they get mentally affected by what they see every single night. The point of impact is that, those serials create a bad image in their mind that; they try to compare the serial situation with their own family (Shuvo, 2009). Evidence confirms that Indian drama serials are consisted of events, full of sexual harassment, revenge, aggressions and sorrowfulness (Shuvo, 2009). Extra marital relationship is one of the common features of Indian serials. To sketch an example, despite having wife and three children the hero maintain a illegal relationship with other lady in the serial “keya Hua Tera Wada” telecasted on Star TV. Sometimes this affair is presented in a nice way by which the views of these serials are being easily influenced in this illicit affair. “Ma” is another serial which is very popular among people of Bangladesh but it teaches family dispute. It presents the cruelty of Aunts and her daughter on the heroin as well as the dispute over property. ‘Amrit Manthan’ is another popular drama telecasted on Life OK where main issue is jealousy. Besides, it is the story of two sisters who become each other's enemies. Discrimination between rich and poor is the subject matter of these serials such as Tapur Tupur and ‘Saat Pake Badha’ telecasted on Z Bangla. This serial also shows the conflict between mother in law and daughter in law like another serial ‘Rashi” and telecasted on the same channel. Indian drama also teaches revengeful behavior and criminal activity as well such as “Is payeer ka Kya Naam Do”. Apart from these, dramas entertain most of the Bangladeshis with their vulgar and absurd stories and characters and performances. It also exposes some unnecessary things such as blackmail, a higher degree of suspicion. The issue where Indian drama serials are a source of entertainment or social degradation has turned out to be more important these days. Although our people have divergent opinions about it, most of them have agreed on the common concept that these drama serials are broadcasted on the television in the form of entertainment are indicative of moral degradation. Use of vulgar words in dialogues, women’s vulgar dress-up, obscene appearance, unethical deeds undoubtedly defile the normal characters and mentalities of our people.
Educate criminal activities
Hindi drama serials educate and train people in committing criminal activities confessed by 7 percent respondents. It shows how to do harm to counterpart, how to originate discord among family members even how to kill people. It teaches to kill opposite person by mixing poison in food or hiring hoodlums to success operation. The technique of child abduction is also taught in these serials. Mamun Hossain, student of Computer science of Stamford University, resides at Mirpur told, Social crime can be learned from Hindi daily soaps. Because it demonstrates how offensive activities are occurred. So an ill person can easily get idea to commit criminal act through these serials.
Impose cultural aggression
It is alleged by 12 percent participants that Indian drama serials impose cultural aggression on our local culture. Bangladesh is the second largest Muslim country in the world where 80% people are followers of Islam (Helal, 2012). But these serials spreading Hinduism culture among Bangladeshi people. It can be observed in case of food habit, dress up, speaking style, rituals and festivals. In addition, these garbage serials are silently changing our culture, our behavioural and thinking pattern (Shahriar, 2012). So, these are silently undermining our local culture and increasing the sense of Hinduism. According to Mehedi Hasan Tanim, who lives at Taltola area of Dhaka city, the student of Textle department of Northen University Bangladesh, reported that, due to mass popularity of Hindi Drama serials, we are losing our local culture. These only reflect the culture of India which is not in accordance with our Bangladeshi culture. Thus, our blind people who have keen interest on Hindi daily soaps cannot distinguish between Indian and Bangladesh culture. Gradually they are following Hinduism avoiding our domestic enriched culture. This is very dangerous consequences of Hindi drama serials. Now it is question of identity. Because there is a proverb, if you lose your culture, you will lose your identity

Conclusion
Indian drama serials are not only popular in India but also it is much popular among the people of all age in Bangladesh. The family is hardly seen in Bangladesh where Indian drama serial (Hindi or Bangla) is not seen. People enjoy these dramas and imitate the life style depicted in these serials which is undermining our culture and spreading the culture of Hinduism. Our culture is at a stake now due to the addiction in Hindi drama serials. There is proverb, “If you lose your culture, you will lose your identity’. So, time has come to think what is telecasting in this Indian daily soaps and what we are learning. Otherwise, if we fail to identify the negative consequences of these serials we will lose our identity as Bangladeshi in the course of time.

Project 2: MSJ11211 Mass Communication
Course Code and Name: MSJ11211 – Mass Communication Project Name: The Oppressed Box
Project Description: Students were required to create a mask as part of this course. The mask's theme was based on the term's Curriculum Integration theme, "Pedagogy of the Oppressed." This was a group project that served as the course's final project. For this project, we developed a plan and chose a friend to make a mask on his face. After designing and painting the mask, we displayed it at Shilpakola Academy.
Project Date: 2018, Spring 181 Project Justification: The project was created for the university's Curriculum Integration Program. Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a theme that refers to the education system of cost colonial societies. We were expected to learn how to make a mask and communicate a message through it. We reflected the message that our post-colonial mentality always binds our interests and goal of our life.

Project: The Oppressed Box
CI Theme: In this semester our CI theme is Pedagogy of the oppressed. Pedagogy is a colonial education system. It is a very bad practice for an education system. In these system student became oppressed by their teacher or the system of their studying. In this system student has no right to tell his opinion. He cannot express anything that can make his understanding easier. The thought of teacher is considered as last word. We can know about the theme in details by attending CI forum. We can also know that this system is not only applying in our education system but also in everywhere of our society. We always influenced by the powerful in our society. But it’s time to change the system. And we are the new generation we will started the change.
Our Message: Under the theme of CI we made a mask in this semester. The title of our mask is The Oppressed Box. By making this mask we are trying to give a massage to the mass audience. Our massage is our student’s brain becomes an oppressed box day by day. And it controlled by our teacher. Our teacher always told us to think different, think big and think outside from text book. But they always rapped our mind with our curricular activities like assignment, presentation, project, exams etc. For this curriculum pressure students can’t think outside the box. It affects his brain and kills his different thinking that might be help our society or his own life makes better in future.
We chose this because we face this scenario in our daily life. There are so many students who are really good at different types of extra-curricular activities like music, art, acting etc. these could be their future profession or if they attached with those things they should do on these sector. But the pressure of our education system cannot allow them to give some time on this. On the other hand our teacher our parents always tell that u cannot do anything cannot think outside the box.
Layout: when we first think to make the mask we decide make two mask. One will be teacher and another one will be student. Then we think about our theme and chose our theme which is the oppressed box. We are planning to install some pin in student’s head and attached some piece of paper top of the pin and write some word in the paper like assignment, presentation, project, exams etc. then we decide to put red color to teacher’s face which describe him as a oppressor and put blue color to student face which describe him as an oppressed who are trying to find peace. And we planned to add a text on the top of teacher’s head as a message he gives to his students. The message is think outside the box. By doing all these we are trying to express that our teachers always suggest us to think or doing something different but they rapped our mind by the curriculum activities.
Tumblr media
Painting and Installation: we use acrylic color to paint our mask. We use some printed image and cotton for make brain of student. We use symbolic image like guitar, book, camera, painting tools that we use in the brain of students head. We improvise our plan during the painting.
When we started to paint our mask we made a big change to our theme. We use cotton and printed symbolic image in student’s head. We change the color of teacher’s face. We make it dark brown to describe him as a statue who is also influenced by our education system. And we paint our board by black color. By using black color on board we are describe that it’s our education system and the teachers and students are influenced by the system. We also remove the plan of install pin to students head because it’s risky to put pin on masks head. We replace these by using stick on the top of student’s head. And it also describe that the teacher controlled student’s head. And we put black and white color to students eyes for describe that he is in a hallucination because of the pressure in her head.
We face some problem while we make color. It’s our first work where we have to do painting and we have not any idea about color. So we face some problem to do painting.
Finally after facing so many problems we think we make the thing which we want. It is not fulfilling our expectation but we tried heard to visualize our thoughts. If we get some knowledge for painting we can make it better.
Exhibition: we showed our work in an exhibition which held on Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy. This exhibition organized by the Media Studies and Journalism department of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
We think our display was very good. This show means a lot to us. It’s a great opportunity for us to send our thoughts to the mass audience. By using this platform we can prove ourselves in front of our society and share our thinking. What our generation can think.
Most of our spectators are student from different institution. But there was a different type of spectators who belongs from different ages and cultures. There was so many guardians, teachers and some people who are interested in different form of arts. But the majority spectators are students.
If we can get any chance to showing our work in any other platform obviously we displayed our work. Because we want to share our thoughts to more people for grow these kinds of thoughts in their mind.
Feedback: we interviewed some of our spectators. We interviewed two students and one guardian.
We chose them because they are related to our work. The students can relate directly to our work. And the guardian is indirectly related to our work.
We ask them what are the first thing came in their mind when they saw our work.  What are they understand by saw this? And how was our work, is it good or bad?
We ask this question because we want to know how our work was and how they relate with this.
The students were clear about our massage. They understood the theme easily and also they like it. But the guardian said he take some minutes to understood the themes. He was not pretty much clear about it but he also likes it.
We get feedback as we expected. Because most of the spectators like our works and also they said the message is clear. They got the message easily because we are trying our best to add more details to make our message easier.
Realization: At the end we realize that we learn a lot to do this work. We thought how generate an idea. This work increases our visualization power. We got idea about color. It also thought us how to do a team work. We also introduced with a new term which is Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
If we do it again we thought deeply to make our message stronger. The strength of our work is now we know that we can think different if we gave us some time for thinking. Because before doing this we cannot imagine that we can make this type of things which carry a message.
Our biggest fault is we cannot paint properly. If we make this type of thing in future we will gathered more knowledge about color and do it properly.
Self-Reflection:
In this project, I have learned
1. How to make a Mask Making 2. Craftsmanship 3. How to use a mask to present any theme or message.

Course Code and Name: MSJ11213 Principles of Public Relations Project Name: Is staying home always safe?
Project Description: My poster refers the domestic violence during this pandemic. I tried to focus on the violence which women are facing. Not only this, those maids who work at home they also faced a lot harassment. People used their own frustration on someone else. This is one of the main reason that made to do this poster.

Project 4: MSJ11203 Communication and Technology
Course Code and Name: MSJ11203 Communication and Technology Project Name: Online Blog Writing
Project Description: I was assigned to write a 1000-word blog post as part of this course. This was an individual project. The topic of the blog post can be anything. As a result, I'm writing about a Young Businessman.
Project Date: 2018, Fall 183 Project Justification: Students were expected to learn how to create and share a blog using a free blogging platform available on the internet as part of this project.
Project: A Young Entrepreneur
Success is easy, but become a successful person is much easier than you thought. Because it’s only possible if you get it during youth. As it’s the right time to commit mistakes and by growing your age you recover with those mistakes which helps you to become successful. These words have been said by Kazi Rakib, who is a young entrepreneur of an online shop “Axaro” in the E-commerce business of Bangladesh.
Axaro is an online clothing store which sales their products on both e-commerce and f-commerce sites. Axaro is one of the popular online stores in facebook with almost 1 lac likes. The main product of their business is t-shirt. Most of their designs are own made and very unique. They mainly focus on trends and youth culture.
Tumblr media
Axaro’s journey wasn’t that much easy. He started his business at 2011 but couldn’t stablish it for lack of investment and not knowing things properly. There was no one beside him to guide properly and his family don’t want him to do business. Right after two years he came up with new idea of business which is based on E-commerce. Rakib always wanted to do something unique and challenging. His thought makes him to start this business. Asking about his inspiration he said, “the world is quiet dependent on Amazon and Ali Baba and I just tricked it with my own idea.” At the beginning he wasn’t satisfying with his new business and he was pretty much on the depression. There were not customers on online as it wasn’t much popular that time. Obviously if you don’t exist physically how you’re going to gain customers trust. And during that that time it became more challenging for him to get customers on online. While having conversation about trust he said, “I don’t do business with my customers, I make relations with them.” In the early time he used to buy products from Gulistan and sell them on online. He only got a couple of orders in a month, where he was buying more than fifty of his products. When having a zero knowledge about the market he started to roam into the market and settled with producing goods instead of buying and with his own design. So he started to buy raw materials and contacts with the local garments to make his products. This helps him to move further in his journey.
People started to like his design as he come up with some trendy and fancy, which focus mainly the young generations.
Tumblr media
While he was making things good he got introduced with facebook marketing, which was the turning point for his business. Suddenly he realizes about growing his business as it was the right time. He appointed an employee in the marketing sector for his business to look over the other side. The facebook boosting works magically to become highlighted within the customers and it also made people to trust and rely on them. Day to day their shop is getting popular among people and they also started to receive orders from outside the Dhaka. While asking about the orders from outside Dhaka he said that he take help of S.A. Paribahan to send goods to the customers and it is one of the reliable courier service in Bangladesh. Inside Dhaka he appointed to two employees on a monthly basis salary who delivers those products to the customers.
Tumblr media
Setting up a business is quiet tough and especially when you’re going to do it on online it become more challenging, obviously when there are plenty of shop available near us. At present Rakib got a business partner to work with him as a investor. They also came up with new products like Glass Frame and Posters. They also got sign with “Daraz” which is an online market platform. When I asked him that the whole thing was a risk. He replied with a smile that “business means taking risk and I just took it.” He started his capital only with ten thousand taka, where now yearly he is making a profit of 10 lac taka.
Self-Reflection
In this project, I learned,
1. How to open a blog. 2. How to write a blog post. 3. Interview writing 4. How to write a blog with embedded videos, hyperlinks, and other options.

Project 5: MSJ11201 English for Media
Course Code and Name: MSJ11201 English for Media
Project Name: Draw Attention to The Nature & In to The Sea
Project Description: For this course, we were told to write a feature article for any free online blog platform, such as Tumblr. The topic of the blog post can be anything. As a result, I'm writing about Travelling.
Project Date: 2018, Summer 182
Project Justification: Students were expected to learn how to create and share a blog using a free blogging platform available on the internet as part of this project. I wrote an article about my Sylhet trip.
Project: Blog: 1 “Draw Attention to The Nature” Blog: 2 “In to The Sea”
Blog:1 Travelling is one of the key part of my life. It gives you a relief from all your busy and regular life and helps you to spent some quality time in bliss. From my childhood it attracts me to visit new places and I try to find stories from each of the places. So, my camera is one of my mate to get those beautiful moments and scenarios. I try to become a storyteller, but if I tell you my experience only just by describing things, I am pretty sure that you won’t be able to feel the situation properly. So, I try to take photos to create life in my story.
Tumblr media
Well if I start about my story then I have to get back to a couple of years ago when I visited Sylhet. It is situated in the northern Bengal right bank in the Surma River. If you want to get some proper country site, then I must talk about Sylhet. If you’re going from Dhaka, then it won’t take a long time to reach Sylhet. I like to travel at night, because when I woke up in the morning a new day just to start. Just like the same with the morning I started my Sylhet trip and my destination is Bichanakandi and Tanua Hour. After reaching to the Sylhet you have to look for a hotel to keep your bags and important things in safe. So, we looked for a hotel which is cheap and suitable for us. When we are all set with our hotel we booked a mini bus and headed for our destination. The road wasn’t good enough, we all couldn’t sit still but it was fun for us. We sing songs together and people from outside, they were laughing by seeing us. I guess they enjoyed too. Well, after a couple of hours we see something extra ordinary scenario in front of us. We all stayed silent by seeing the beauty of Bichanakandi. There is a mountain from which lots of stones are coming through the water and the water is very cold that if you take your feet on that you will know that the nature can make peoples mind calm. All of my friends started taking shower and I started doing my job.
Tumblr media
After spending a quality time in bichanakandi we headed back to our hotel and waited for the next day.
The next morning, we woke very early in the morning cause we have to get a local bus to get in Tahirpur from which we will go to Tangua Hour. The specialty of the Tangua its surrounded by water in a acres of area and the depth of water isn’t much deep. So, if you don’t know swimming not to worry you wont sink in there.

So, I try to take photos to create life in my story.
Tumblr media
Hope you enjoyed my previous blog and please do response if you have any query about my works. So let’s go to today’s blog, where I am going to share story about the Sea. The world is surrounded by water and we are lucky that we have the world’s largest sea beach. So, I feel very lucky to see it and take photos of it. So let’s back to the story when I and with my couple of friends started the journey towards Cox’s Bazar which is the world’s largest sea beach. And as I said earlier we like to start our journey at night so that we can have the whole day on our side. When we woke up from the bus, we couldn’t belief our eyes that there is endless in front of us. The long you see just the sea and with some small boats. People are enjoying themselves with the sea. I didn’t look anywhere else, just put my camera out and took a shot.
Tumblr media
We spent some time near the sea then we headed for our hotel room. On the next day we started our journey towards St. Martin Island. And to get there you have to go by the boat. After taking our breakfast we start our journey and you wont belief that at a certain point there is only you on the sea and no one else. It would be wrong if I don’t introduce Seagulls to you, which will fly around your boat and give you a company while your going to that Island.
Tumblr media
When we reach to the island we were tired a little but honestly I wasn’t that much tired. We didn’t have that much time to spent there and specially for me. So, take out my camera and roaming around the island to get a shot of the sea, as I have to get back on the next day. The whole place was crowded I must say. Its was tough to find that peaceful and silent zone which took a lot time to find. After getting the shot I spent my time with that silence very peacefully.

Project 6: MSJ11214 Convergence Communication 1
Course Code and Name: MSJ11214 Convergence Communication 1 Project Name: Project: The Crows Around Us Project Description: Our theme is a lady wearing sari is being harassed by others. There are also some other people who are not taking any action but do comment on that issue and take pictures.
Here, by the emojis, we portray the different emotions of people who are at the scene. As for the pieces of paper, those are the different types of comments people have when they see something like this happening. This whole thing is inside a TV. We are trying to show that when something like this happens, no one comes forward to help the victim but do comments. They behave like bystanders.
Project Date: 2018, Summer 182 Project Justification: Crows are one of the common living species around us and we don’t see them flying together and screaming ridiculously, but only when any of them face any problem a huge number of them gather and fly around him but none of the crow could help him to fly back with them. They see the whole scenario just like the other species who named as human. People saw things around them, if it is good they feel proud of it and when its worst they are ashamed of it but none of them thinks to stand of it.
We tried to merge the behavior between Crows and Human.
Group Members:
1. Nur-A-Alam Kader Parag- 171012084
2. Asaduzzaman Noor Shahed- 171012086
3. Md. Hafizur Rahman- 171012096
4. Aminul Islam Sajib- 161012002
Project: The Crows Around Us
The art that we're going to present will mostly be a performing art. We will attempt to show the behavior of crows. We see that when one crow is injured, many others start flying around that place but none of those crows actually come down to help or look closer. This is somewhat similar to what bystander effect is. So we'll try to recreate that scenario through our performing art.
We will have a background video projected using a mini-projector showing a lot of crows flying overhead. We will dress up as crows ourselves with a costume that makes us look like crows. One of us will be lying on the floor with some sort of red color/cloth depicting that he is injured. While he lies on the floor, still in his crow outfit, the rest of us group members will also be in crow's outfit, wondering around. But we won't be going close to the injured one to help. We'll really be looking at him or maybe even taking pictures of him injured, lying on the floor. Just like the people on bystander effect or the crows in nature, we'll be seeing the injured person, we'll be talking about him, but we won't actually go there to help.
Exhibition: We showed our work at "Gallery Chitrak". We got enough space for our work. The show was really effective and beneficial.
There were different people from different cultures. Students, guardians, teachers and many more people came to see the show. Everyone was interested in our project. They asked many questions to know more about this and gave feedback.
We think that our installation art also should have been shown at any other renowned gallery because we want to express our message by our artwork. We want to make people understand the impact of the bystander effect in our society.
Feedback: We took many interviews of students and guardians. Here they are;
First, we talked with a student named Ashfat Hossain Rahi. We talked with him because we noticed that he was looking delighted when he saw our project. He told us, “It was amazing work. I really like it. Everyone who is seeing the theme is also a bystander. I especially like your lighting system. With these lights you can focus our character perfectly. And about bystanders I think everybody should come forward to help others. When we take a step, the criminals will take a step back.”
Then we talked to another student, Amzad Raja. He said, “I think installation art or performance art is the perfect way to express our society. We can also express our mind. And you can do it perfectly. In one TV frame we can perfectly focus all the things that are happening around us. I think we are bystander because of our lack of courage. If we can come forward, we can solve the bystander effect.”
Realization:
First of all, I am really happy to be a part of a project where we worked on a big social issue, happening nowadays.
I got much better feedback from the audience as I expected. I believe the spectators got the message perfectly because our message that we wanted to express through artwork was pretty much clear and we got a good number of responses from the audiences. I think we are successful at our work because we can give the core message of bystander effect through our work.

Project Description: As part of this course, students were required to submit a 4000-word development communication related campaign. This project was a group project and was the final project of the course. The campaign is about menstrual hygiene for the housemaids. I teamed up with Kazi Fariha Purni, Adrita Karim Drohee, Subrina Azad, Tahmina Yeasmin Laboni and Muhammad Ibrahim Mujahid.
Project Date: 2019, Summer 192 Project Justification: Through these project students were expected to learn how to convey a campaign from the scratch. We have chosen the project because 4 of our group members are female who shared that there are various problems in this field as nobody gives attention to house maids. Lack of menstrual hygiene can be an unknown issue amongst the housemaids who lack knowledge and information about such matter so we chose the campaign topic for the course.

1. Introduction
Menstruation is the process in a woman that discharges blood and other materials from the uterus once in a month. The reason why women get period is because of the menstrual cycle which causes the rise and fall of the hormones by the discharge of blood. Menstruation plays a great role in every woman’s womanhood and it is a vital matter to their health, wellbeing, empowerment, dignity and productivity.
Menstrual hygiene can be defined as “Women and adolescent girls are using clean menstrual management materials to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required, and having access to facilities to dispose of used menstrual management materials.” (UNICEF and WHO, 2014)
In easier terms, we understand that it is the practices or conditions we try to adapt or follow during menstruation in order to maintain a standard lifestyle by being clean. So, encouraging women specially the domestic workers and women from the rural side to maintain their menstrual hygiene, remove fear and briefly explain its importance and benefits of staying clean during period can set examples for development in our society.
In 2018, the United Nations (UN) reported that the shame, stigma, and misinformation that surround periods can lead to serious health and human rights concerns. That’s why they declared menstrual hygiene an issue that affects public health, gender equality, and human rights. (UNFPA ESARO, 2018)
Being unhygienic during menstruation may leads to higher levels of urogenital infection (Das Gupta, 2008).
An article also said that Infection of reproductive tract, Uninary tract infection, yeast infection, Hepatitis B infection and Risk of cervical cancer can be happen due to poor menstrual hygiene. (Bhaswati Sarma, 2019)
Housemaids or domestic workers are part of our daily urban life. They can be classified by two types, which are:
1. Permanent Housemaid
Permanent Housemaids are housemaids who stays in a single household to help the houseowner for 24x7.
2. Contractual Housemaid
Contractual Housemaids are housemaids who help the houseowner for a specific period of a day. They work at different households at the different part of the day. They usually stay nearby slum or low-income neighbourhood.
Dhanmondi is one of the most populous residential in Dhaka city, where a great number of both the male & female members of the family goes to work. So almost every houses of Dhanmondi has either a permanent or contractual housemaid. Dhanmondi 15 is a specific road which is more populous than other roads and has some nearby low-income neighbourhood (e.g. Rayer Bazar, Chorokghata). We have chosen this are because studying this area will be more accessible, efficient and accurate at the same time.
The topic of this semester’s curriculum integration is The Social Norms Theory. This theory aims to understand the environment and interpersonal influences (such as peers) in order to change behavior, which can be more effective than a focus on the individual to change behavior. This means that behavior of human beings in the society is strongly influenced by the misconceptions of how our peers act and think. In our country, menstruation is considered an embarrassment or even worse, a taboo which falls under The Social Norms Theory. For which it is something that women are not comfortable talking about or being questioned about. This attitude towards menstruation in the society can be a reason for several problems which hampers the womanhood. So, it is important to break this stereotypical thought by raising awareness and acknowledging the society about the menstrual hygiene.
Lack of menstrual hygiene can be an unknown issue amongst the housemaids who lack knowledge and information about such matter. We will conduct a campaign that will create awareness and help them to plan a set of activities which will not affect them regarding infertility or other problems related to menstrual hygiene over a period of time.
2. Analysis
2.1 Situation Analysis
In our society ‘’Menstruation’’ is often referred to as a taboo and there are many stigmas surrounding this simple and natural concept. Women from lower class feel awkward or shy to talk about their period because some have been taught that having periods is shameful. With all these negative messages, it is normal for a woman to hide their menstrual problems and not talk about it. But they do not know that because of this hiding or not being open about problems which will lead to poor menstrual hygiene and ultimately, they will be victims of greater problems. Fungal infections, reproductive tract infections and urinary tract infections and most importantly, it can leave women vulnerable to infertility.
According to National Hygiene Assessment, 2018 57% of adolescents and 65% of adult women were uninformed about menstruation before their first experience.
UNICEF conducted a survey about how Bangladeshi women manage menstruation, and found that at least one third hide their rags in dirty places. One in three girls fail to change their cloths frequently or wash them with soap after use. Only just over half of the women dried their rags outside and in full sun — the conditions required to kill bacteria. Low standards of menstrual hygiene lead to wide-spread vaginal and urinary infections. (Seymou, K., 2008)
Permanent Housemaids who live apart from there family are often feel awkward to talk about her menstruation with the houseowners. So, they remain unaware which leads to many serious problems.
Contractual Housemaids who work hard all day in multiple houses to make a living are not equipped with knowledge on how to deal with their feminine hygiene. Therefore, it is an issue that needs to be addressed in the society.
Radia Tamim, a research consultant from Magnum says ‘Lower income classes (below tk.15,000 monthly household income) mostly use cloths (constituting 4% of the respondents) as well as some other methods like cotton, tissue, papers, ashes etc. This class is usually employed as clerks, attendants or maids.’
From our survey that we conducted in Dhanmondi 15 and its nearby areas, some housemaids decided to speak up about their menstruation:
Shahida, a 17 years old permanent housemaid says ‘I have been working as a housemaid for the past three years exactly when I had my first period and since I have been using cloth.’ When we asked about her opinion on sanitary napkins she says that since she has been a regular user of cloth, she would not be comfortable using any other material for her menstrual. Ferdousi, a 15 years old permanent housemaid say ‘I recently had my first period a couple of months ago and I had no idea about menstruation so I had to seek my owner’s help for my 6 time. Then she introduced me to sanitary napkins. I also used cloths few times but now I am a regular user of pads.’
Shilpi, a 21 years old contractual housemaid say ‘I was 14 years old when I had my first period and cloth has been the only material that I have used for my menstruation. Even though I heard about it but I do not have any knowledge about the sanitary napkins.’
Sufia, a 32 years old contractual housemaid say ‘I have been using cloth since my first experience. I heard that pads are more comfortable and easier to use but I never tried them because they require a sum of money and since I have two sons to take care and pay their school fees therefore I never considered using money for buying pads.’
Another factor about the locals’ attitude about menstruation in our society was observed when we went to 2/3 buildings to conduct our surveys and talk to the housemaids, the security guards of these buildings asked us about our whereabouts and after being told about the survey is about menstruation. They did not let us in to conduct the survey in those buildings and addressed the entire matter as a demeaning subject that is shameful to talk about. This sets an example on how the males from the downgrade class reacts to menstruation.
2.2 Audience Analysis
When it comes to the audience of our campaign, we have divided them into three categories:
2.2.1 Primary Audience
The primary audience are those whose behaviour is the main indicator success. They are the main bodies of the audiences. They are also known as the target audience.
in this campaign, our primary audience are :
Who ?
Why ?
Permanent Housemaid
Permanent Housemaids are sufferer of problems for being unhygienic during menstruation period due to unawareness, shyness or taboo. Our job is to aware them and ensure to make them hygiene during that period
Contractual Housemaid
Permanent Housemaids are sufferer of problems for being unhygienic during menstruation period due to unawareness, shyness or taboo. Our job is to aware them and ensure to make them hygiene during that period
Female Member of Houseowners Family
Female Member of Houseowners Family should be aware because if the are aware than they can communicate, talk and provide hygienic materials to housemaids.
Male Member of Houseowners Family
Male Members are also important, because in this society they are one who goes to market/shops to buy all the products for family
Family of Contractual Housemaid
Family of Contractual Housemaid is also important because they are the one who can easily communicate with their wife/daughter to be hygiene.
2.2.2 Secondary Audience
People whose behaviour or action strongly influence or affect the primary audience behaviour are called the secondary audience. They are a group of people that we need to identify and activate to influence the primary audiences.
For this campaign, our secondary audiences are :
Who ?
Why ?
Family of Permanent Housemaid
Family of Permanent Housemaid is also important because they are the first one to aware their daughter during puberty. If they can aware them earlier it will be easier to evade those problems
Friends/ Peers of Contractual & Permanent Housemaid
Friends/peers can also significantly reduce of the problems by sharing information
2.2.3 Tertiary Audience
Tertiary audiences are those who are capable of indirectly help or hamper the behaviour of secondary and primary audiences.
For our campaign our tertiary audiences are clinics such as Surjer Hashi Clinic or Bidyanondo Foundation which is volunteer organization in Dhaka.
Who ?
Why ?
Surjer Hashi Clinic
Surjer Hashi will be able to provide consultancy among the primary and secondary audience
Bidyanondo Foundation
Bidyanondo Foundation who are arleady selling sanitary napkins among garments workers for 10taka only, can also be part of our campaign to provide this feature for housemaids too.
2.3 Formative Research
Formative research is to refine and determine the campaign process. It provides exact and up-to-date information to improve the planning of campaign. Formative research helps to build the campaign strategy.
For our campaign, we have conducted a formative research to understand audience behaviour to develop a campaign strategy.
2.3.1 Objectives of Formative Research
- To find necessary data for conducting the campaign.
- To identify audience behaviour.
- To analyse audience behaviour.
2.3.2 Sampling Method and Type
- For our convenience, we used purposive method as sampling technique for our qualitative research.
- We have conducted In-depth Interview session with 12 contractual housemaids, 8 permanent housemaids, 3 male members from the family of contractual housemaids and 5 houseowners
-
2.3.2
2.3.3 Sample Area
Sample area was same as the campaign area. So, we have picked up our samples from Dhanmondi 15 No, Rayer Bazar and Charakghata.
2.3.4 Survey Findings
Using cloth is more common among contractual housemaids
We have interviewed 12 contractual housemaids but none of them is using sanitary pad. Only one respondent showed her interest to use sanitary pad, but right now her menstruation cycle is off.
There are myths of using sanitary napkin among housemaids
Some of or respondent said they do not use sanitary pad because of they heard it is uncomfortable.
Most of contractual housemaid does not use hygiene products due to economical reason
10 of our respondents have said that they do not use sanitary pad because they cannot afford it
Some of them are completely unaware about sanitary pad
2 of our respondents have said that they are completely unaware about sanitary pad. They have no idea that what actually is it and how to is it.
Permanent Housemaids are more aware because of house owners
Thru our interview, we have found that 4 of our respondents is using sanitary pad and they have been aware by the house owners.
Some permanent housemaids do not use hygiene product because they feel shy
3 of our respondents have said that they do not use sanitary pads because of they have to go pharmacy by themselves to buy pads, but the present “taboo” situation makes them feel shy.
House owner often does not talk about menstruation with contractual housemaid
Though most house owners talk about menstruation with permanent housemaids, but only one of our house owner respondents have said that she talked about menstruation with her contractual housemaid.
2.4 Audience Behaviour Analysis
We have interviewed 20 housemaids for our campaign on menstrual hygiene. 10 of them were contractual and 10 of them were permanent. We asked them few questions to know about their behaviour towards menstruation hygiene and they are:
1. How old are you?
2. What do you use during period?
3. Do you know about sanitary napkins? (the ones who use cloth)
4. Why do you not use sanitary napkins? (the ones who use cloth)
5. How do you clean the cloth?
6. How many times you re-use the cloth?
7. Do you know how to stay healthy during your period?
2.4.1 Knowledge
· Permanent Housemaids:
All of the permanent housemaids that we interviewed had knowledge about sanitary napkins and 7 of them agreed to be knowledgeable about the menstrual hygiene or about the problems that can occur if one does not stay clean or following menstrual hygiene.
· Contractual Housemaids:
6 out of the 10 contractual housemaids said they know about the sanitary napkins and 7 out of them said they know about the importance of staying hygiene during period or the problems they might have to face later in life.
2.4.2 Attitude
· Permanent Housemaids:
8 out of them were very positive and interacting with interest regarding the subject and answered questions without being awkward or shy but 2 of them were extremely shy or we could see a bit of discomfort on their body language and face to even talk about their menstruation. One of them even admitted that the reason she never tried sanitary napkin is simply because she is too shy to go to a shop and buy it from a man.
· Contractual Housemaids:
7 of them showed positive response for menstrual hygiene and the rest 3 did not seem much interested or bothered about the menstrual hygiene. Their biggest concern was to earn their bread and to eat rice 3 times a day with their family.
2.4.3 Practice
· Permanent Housemaids:
Out of 10 only 3 housemaids use sanitary napkins and the rest 7 uses cloth or materials during their period. Most said it is the cost that do not make them purchase the sanitary pads and the 3 housemaids who use the sanitary pads are because their owners bear the cost and buy them their pads.
· Contractual Housemaids:
None of the contractual housemaids use sanitary pads. This was a sad part of our survey. They said since buying food and paying for their children school fees already cost them a lot. They do not want to buy the sanitary pads with some extra cost.
3. Goals and Objective
3.1 Goal
To create awareness about menstrual hygiene among the housemaids and the domestic workers of Dhanmondi 15.
3.2 Objectives

Project 10: MSJ11231 Visual Communication
Course Code and Name: MSJ11231 Visual Communication Project Name: Respect Existence or Expect Resistance
Project Description: Students were required to paint a wall art as part of this course. The art's theme was based on the term's Curriculum Integration theme, which was "social norms." This was a group project that represented as the course's final project.
Project Date: 2019, Summer 192 Project Justification: The theme for Curriculum Integration Summer Semester 2019 of Media Studies and Journalism dept. of ULAB is “Social Norms Theory”. Introduced by H.W. Perkins and A. D. Berkowitz, the theory of social norms aims to understand the environment and change behavior in interpersonal influences. The theory was first used in 1986 to address student alcohol use patterns. Subsequently the social norms approach is best known for its effectiveness in reducing alcohol consumption and alcohol-related injury in college students. The approach has also been used to address a wide range of public health issues including tobacco use, driving under the influence of prevention, seat belt use, and more recently sexual assault prevention.
Peer influence, and the role it plays in individual decision-making around behavior, is the primary focus of the theory. The theory posits that our behavior is influenced by the misperceptions of how our peers think and act. Social norms interventions aim to present accurate information about peer group norms in an attempt to correct misperceptions. Accordingly, the theory states that correcting misperceptions of perceived norms will most likely result in a decrease in problem behavior or an increase in desired behavior.

Project “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance”
This is our theme title. According to the social norms theory we tried to represent the true fact of our male dominating society towards women. So, for that reason we draw this Wall Art to resist this taboo from our society and also culture.
Tumblr media
Layout
As we can see from the layout, in the middle of the wall there is a women sitting and a hand is trying to grab her. The hand plays as the norm here and there is a key attach with the women which will be operated by the hand. Behind of this both we see a sun and a dark city. This represent that though we see the hope but we still do nothing to resist those norms from the society
Left Wall The left wall is painted with a cage and an angel. This represent as someone have to be a savior to save the women from the norms which were making women caged. As the color is natural so it means freedom than that dark city.
Tumblr media
Middle wall As we can see from the layout, in the middle of the wall there is a women sitting and a hand is trying to grab her. The hand plays as the norm here and there is a key attach with the women which will be operated by the hand. Behind of this both we see a sun and a dark city. This represent that though we see the hope but we still do nothing to resist those norms from the society.
Tumblr media
Right Wall The third wall is typography. We gave our message, “Respect Existences or Expect Resistance”. It means we should accept the living life without any narrow minded thoughts.
Tumblr media
Realization: My realization after this wall art that we should aware people though painting and where institution is giving us such kind of platform to show our work, so we should do more this kind of activities. Not only this theory, there are more norms inside our society and we need to break it down and Wall Art could be a strong weapon for this.
Final Wall Art
Tumblr media
Self-reflection: To learn visual scenes. To know the basics of visual. To improve communication skills with art. To know the basics of color, stencil and crafting.

Project
“Othoba Mrittu”
Production Type
Short film (Fiction)
Duration
5 min
Background
In our country there is several incidents happened in past twenty years, that is murder of progressive protester were killed by different extremist group. These incidents are always giving us an inner pain and pushed to thought about it. We tried to tell a story about those incidents. ‘Othoba Mrittu’ is the result of our thoughts. We always want a world where people can think and express anything they want without hurting anyone. But we know that’s not possible in a way. So we chose this story to express the pain a human feels when he got bothered to express his feelings.
Objective
In this film we try to talk about a communist protester who tries to tell the truths. We try to talk about the People who really want a world without bloodshed. But these thoughts become the cause of their murder. They are protesters. Their protest says that they want to make world better but the extremist didn’t understand the depth of their words and murder the souls to makes world tougher. We try to visualize the moments what type of pressure and pain they feel when they got pressurized by the extremist and society. Our main objective is to communicate with the people and give them the feelings that feel progressive people.
Key massage
In this film we tried to focused on the people who gets pressurize and murder by the extremist. Our key massage is to the people that we have to change our thoughts and make our acceptance skill too high so we can respect each other thoughts and make the world better.
Secondary massage
We tried to point that after 50 years of our independent we cannot get the freedom of speech properly and cannot share our thoughts freely. It’s an indication to the people of our country.
Target Audience
Our target audience of this film is basically the person who belongs to the age 18 and above. We really love to share our film to all types of people and wants to know their thoughts. So the people who are educated and able to accept anything is our target audience.
Cast
We had to act in our own production and no one here is professional. So each of us played our role for the first time.
Ashiqur Rahman Anik as Anik Da
Hafizur Rahman as Comrade Kowshik
Nowshad Ahmed as Siddique
Zopari Lushai as Comrade Zopari
Noman Zishan as Comrade Zishan
Crew Profile Ashiqur Rahman - Director Noman Zishan - Assistant Director Nowshad Ahmed Siddique - Edit and Color Zopari Lushai - Casting Director MD. Hafizur Rahman - Location Sound Asaduzzaman Noor - Cinematographer Arafat Hossain - Production Manager Location Report For this project we were searching for a vintage house then we found one which belongs to one of our friend. In this set we got all facilities that we need for our shooting. We chose our location by the scene and also care about the facilities we need for doing our shoot smoothly. And we think that we meet to all the requirements and could do our shoot without any crisis. Rehearsal Report
We do rehearse total three days before our shooting. In our rehearsal session our whole team was present and we do a meeting first. The purpose of our meeting is to introduce each and every one. And distribute all the work among the team. Also it was an eyes breaking session of our cast because we were work for the first time together. After that we were rehearse for a long time. First day of our rehearsal I try to brief my protagonist the whole script. We describe each and every emotion, depth of the dialogue, scene description. And also got the feedback from him and try to improvise things. Than second day we do each and every scene in an empty room. We do each and every scene for at least twice and trying to find out the problems. Also we do a pronunciation session that helps our cast to pronounce the word correctly. And finally the third day we repeat the rehearsal session but on that day we use the camera and try to make our protagonist camera friendly. This rehearsal session is really helpful for my whole team. It makes us fast and understandable on the shooting days.
Peer Assessment To make ‘Othoba Mrittu?’ we were decided to work with a small team. One of its reason is we are more comfortable to work with the little team. Because we believe that more we less the chaos more furnished work will be produced. We were only seven people in the team. But we were presided about our role in the production before we go for the shoot. Each of the members was playing multiple roles in pre-production, production and post-production. In pre-production stage our whole team was collecting all the resource that we need in our shoot. And in post-production session we do a lot of meeting and watch the film several times to find out our weakness and tries to recover it. It is really hard for us to evaluate our mates. Each and every member gave their level best efforts to make this project successful. Without our team we won’t be able to make this film.

Project "একজন চিত্রকরের গল্প – Story of a storyteller”

Production Dairy of Documentary
We have made the documentary on the Santal community. More specifically, we have worked on the language of the Santals and the issue of losing their land. We worked in three santal villages in Chatra Union of Pirganj Upazilla of Rangpur District. The villages are Shiptari, Kangurpara, Garopara. We were a team of five people working there for 2 weeks. In first week two of us interacted with them and collected data. Next week we started shooting with the whole team. We have found that the Santals are socially, linguistically, religiously, economically, culturally and politically discriminated by Bengali Muslims and the state. We also found that the Santals are deprived of basic rights and state benefits. But in our documentary, we focused on the linguistic inequality and linguistic inequality of the Santals as a reason for losing their land. We named our documentary 'Ajker Hull'. We all know that the Santals rebelled against the British. That movement is known as ‘Hull’. We found by this documentary is that they are still fighting with this society for their rights, for their survival. For this documentary we interviewed school students, college students, university students, teachers, missionary sisters, panchayet prodhan and local people of their community, lawyer and writer.
