thinking about a hypothetical scene in season 2 where frank get's overwhelmed his first day back and scared that he's fucking his second chance up, and mel finds him sitting in the break-room. she sits with him and it's a parallel from season 1, except this time she tells him that it's okay to be sensitive, that he's needed there, and he's doing a great job, and then i immediately explode into a thousand pieces.

remmick and the vampires present a false dichotomy
Hogwood (the man who sold the twins the mill) and the KKK are very obviously bad, they are outright malicious bigotry, they use the n-word and plan to lynch the moore's and their community, they are so blatantly racist and hateful it's unavoidably obvious
remmick and the vampires however say that they believe in equality, say that they want to create a community, and yet remmick's goal throught the movie is to both metaphorically and literally steal sammie's ability for his own goal of reconnecting with his irish ancestors, a white man wants to harm a young and upcoming black man and use talents for his own goals without giving any regard to said black man's autonomy or agency
when sammie sings 'I lied to you' in the juke joint and calls forth the spirits from the past and future, it's a blend of cultures; west african, east asian, native american, and african american song and dance blend together across time and space to tell the stories of blues; where it takes its inspiration from, the music genres it then inspired, the complex history of black american culture and its intersections with other peoples of colour in the USA
when remmick and the vampires kill and turn the people in the juke joint, and then perform rocky road to dublin, only remmick's irish culture is on display, there is no influence from the black and asian people he has forcibly assimilated into his song, it's juxtaposition with the earlier scene is blatant, remmick is more than happy to assimilate people of colour into his 'community' of 'equals', and yet its only whiteness that is celebrated, that is normative
remmick claims that he's doing people a favour by turning them immortal, conviently ignoring that he literally has to suck the life out of them to do so, trapping their spirits on earth, he claims that he's the good guy, that the KKK were gonna come and lynch everyone at the joint in the morning anyways, conviently ignoring that he's doing the exact same thing; a white man leading a mob to kill a bunch of black people
in the final confrontation with sammie remmick repeatedly dunks him into the river, a forceful baptism. both the celtic irish and enslaved west africans had their religions suppressed and destroyed by colonialsm, had christianity forced upon them by the british empire, and in that scene we see remmick repeating that cycle, using christianity to inflict harm, and sammie reclaiming christianity, despite all the complex emotions he has arround it, as many colonised peoples have and still do, when he recites the lord's prayer
remmick and the vampires are no less racist than hogwood and the KKK, are no less predatory or evil, they're just less blantant about their bigotry, they represent the system, the normalised white supremacy that is seeped into the very foundation of culture in america, the point isnt that remmick would call any of the black characters in the movie the n-word, i dont think he would, the point is that his exploitation and desacration and inserting-himself-into-when-he-wasn't-invited of the juke joint is a microcosm of what white people have done to black american arts and culture since ever since there have been black and white people in america, and even before that
theres a reason vultures are shown early on in this movie

The strongest theme of The Pitt for me is how nothing is how the public expects it. You think you know how unhoused people look like? No, he can be a fourth year med student doing his best. CSA survivor with a best friend who committed suicide? she's the meanest R1 who is not letting injustice slide and gets so excited about every procedure. The addict and the woman going through a miscarriage are the most competent senior residents you've ever seen. The attending saving the day at the last minute is an amputee.
Noah Wyles and his team really said "Nothing in ER departments is how it's supposed to be from the 12-hour wait times to the lack of blood, but people going through what would be anybody else's worst day are the only thing keeping the american healthcare system together"

something i noticed and really liked in the pitt is how, despite these characters being great doctors, etc, they are still just people, and they bring their prejudices, the gaps in their knowledge, their unconscious biases to their workplace. i dont mean this to sound like "im glad doctors have biases" just that its a realistic (i think) way of showing how common and frequent these gaps in knowledge can be, and part of portraying a realistic medical environment.
the way whitaker treats joyce (the sickle cell patient) when he believes her to be an addict/"drug seeking". the way langdon interacts with terrance (sprained ankle patient) before he learns that a different approach may have worked better because he is autistic. the way mckay misdiagnoses paula (endometrial infection who recently gave birth patient) due to her weight.
in all these cases, these doctors (and whitaker) didn't Intend to not treat the patient properly, didnt Intend to make mistakes like this, but they did.
and i think its equally important that its pointed out. mohan tells whitaker that he made wrongful assumptions about joyce's pain (because of his assumptions about her, potentially because she is black and because the paramedics introduced her as homeless and drug-seeking). mel shows langdon how she interacts with terrance, because he assumed a patient being autistic would be unrelated to a sprained ankle. collins pulls mckay aside and asks outright if an unconscious bias against paula due to her weight impacted mckay giving adequate care.
i think its both valuable and interesting that each of these cases, not only is it made clear to the audience that these doctors have made a mistake, but that that assumptions they each made are pushed back on when it happens.

preach. the amount of people hating on santos for exposing langdon is infuriating. yeah she went after him out of spite but she did a good thing. i bet you in season 2 we see them have a conversation where he acknowledges that her actions actually helped him. also her threatening to kill that molester was iconic i fell in love
“dr santos is such a bitch but she gets better” skill issue i was her number #1 fan since episode 1. sorry you can only appreciate nuance if the character is male

trinity santos managed to attract every hot woman in the er, uncover a drug diversion scheme, infiltrate princess and perlah's chismis operation, perform a successful reboa that all the senior residents and attendings are now gossiping about, and put a roof over a homeless sopping wet kitten's head, all on her first day on the job
