Unpopular opinion: Joe and Nicky aren’t obsessively flirty every moment of their lives. 

Hear me out, they’re definitely in love with each other and they care about each other, but they’re not….in each other’s arms every second of the day making everyone uncomfortable with their shameless flirting. 

The worst Joe did was wink at Nicky across the table at dinner when Nicky said he thought finding other immortals was like destiny. That’s…it? 

They don’t sit next to each other when they eat their meals. They don’t have their arms over each other’s shoulders, or hold hands as they walk around. They don’t make kissy faces at one another or make obnoxious relationship jokes that really are staples of a honeymoon phase. They don’t even tell relationship-specific stories. 

Nicky and Joe tell Nile the truth: they met by trying to kill each other, and it’s obvious they’re amused by it/accepted it, and Booker/Andy are familiar with the story. But…they’re not outwardly flirty lovebirds that are being flat out Bad Friends by just being trapped in their own Joe/Nicky world every five seconds. 

You know the kind. The ones that sit on each other’s laps and only look/talk to each other as if the rest of the world exists - that’s not them. 

It’s only when they’re by themselves do they tease and flirt with each other. 

With the glaring exception of Joe’s Declaration, they’re not That Couple. And frankly? They just got kidnapped and tossed in a van with a bunch of meat-head bigots and Joe was having A Bad Day and was not Here for them. 

What they do show…is a very mature relationship. They can sit across the room from one another without the desperate need to be in each other’s pockets. Joe can laugh at the fact Nicky just lost 500 euros on a bet, (They look like Euros? If it’s 500 Sudanese pound that’s like…$10 and while that’s funny in it’s own right, I can’t imagine Booker being like “ALL IN” over $10…but that is kinda funny in retrospect). EITHER WAY, whichever version of currency, he’s perfectly pleased to laugh at Nicky’s expense. 

He looks over at Nicky to make sure he’s okay when they’re fighting, and Nicky looks back. But at the end of the fight they’re not making out in a corner to affirm they’re both alive. Like. They move on. They keep it to themselves. Even in Merrick labs, they aren’t all over each other the second they get free from the beds. They just go into mission mode.

And in the get away car- they don’t sit next to each other. 

NONE of this means that they aren’t stupidly in love with each other. But…it also means they’re not so wholly dependent on each other that they cannot function.  I see a lot of fics where they’re just like, making the whole room SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE with how in love they are. 

and that’s fine. You’re welcome to your headcanon and I still think it’s cute!

This is just another perspective. I struggle to think they’re the type of people who wouldn’t be aware how uncomfortable they made someone. Nicky especially just seems far too cognizant/polite to be that much of a dick. 

And really, purposefully being snog-happy is a pretty dickish move.

Except, that is, by one fan in particular. Because ever since he found out that Mickey writes all of the band’s songs, Ian Gallagher has been harboring a bit of a crush.

Comment: 

Oh lord, I adore this fic. I was warming up dinner while I read it, and I am unashamed to say that I did a happy dance in my kitchen for Mickey. I kept yelling "GET THAT DICK, BOY. GET IT."

This was wonderful. This author in general is wonderful. WONDERFUL.

It even has Iggy as a character, and what else do you need in life but Milkovich siblings? NOTHING, THAT'S WHAT. NOTHING.

I adore this fic, it tugged on all the right heart strings and it was written completely in character. Mickey was a little overdramatic and Ian was placating but they were both still assholes in love and it was amazing.

A little dramatic, but Ian has been especially over the top this season, so I think it fits.

This is one of my older bookmarks, but it's still so damn great. It's awesome for a quick read, and the author has amazing comedic timing. I love seeing Mickey getting irrationally angry about his jello, and the ending is just adorable. Mickey's threatening and hilarious and so in love WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED IN LIFE?

Lord, this made me cry my eyes out. In this fic, we assume Mickey's still unable to come out, but really, who saw 4x11 coming? I adore this fic, and protip, don't read it while listening to Shelter by the XX. You might cry. A lot. More than a lot. This was beautiful and well-written and jealousy is so easily to fuck up with a character like Mickey but this author just did it...right? The author got the characterization down pat, and I loved that so much. And some of the oneliners in this and just ouch, my heart.

A crossover between Shameless and Pacific Rim. In which Mickey and Ian are Jager Pilots.

Comment: 

The short summary for this  does not do it justice. I've never watched Pacific Rim, but after this fic, I had the strongest urge to screw the rest of my day so I could. The fic follows Mickey and Ian growing up separately around these monsters - Kaijus - that the human population have been at war with. Mickey and Ian join the war effort, and the bond that these two grow to share is so perfectly encompassed, I was left breathless (and crying on the bus to school).
