Akeelah and the Bee is one of my favorite movies that came out in 2006. It is basically about a young girl who loves to spell and starts to compete in these spelling bees. Well, I loved the movie and not just because it had one of my favorite celebrities starring in it. It was interesting to me how she spelled all those tough words. It was alot of long and complicated words that those kids had to spell. Watching that movie really motivated me to expand my vocabulary. So one day after watching the movie I started looking through a dictionary. It had amazed me of how many words there were that I did not know. Just looking at the different words in the book and reading their meanings helped me. It expanded my vocabulary. So therefore, it was easy when I started to read new books because I had learned a bunch of new words.

B is for bible. I have been a christian my whole life and I had never really just read the bible until a year ago. Of course I had always heard bits and pieces of it but I just did not read it like that. I do not think that many people just sat down and read the whole bible. At that point in my life I was reading more than usual. I wanted a challenge so that is when I decided I wanted to read the bible. For me doing that was a challenge in two ways. One way was the bible is super long of course. The other reason was because I was attempting to read the KJV (KIng James Version). The KJV is very hard to read, at least that is what I think. I just did not understand what was being said. After looking up a couple of words I fianlly understood what I was reading. It took me a couple of weeks to finish the whole book, but at the end of the day I was proud that I had accomplished my task.

Cartel series were my favorite books to read. I have read every book more than two times just because it was that good to me. "The Cartel" was written by Ashley and Jacques. Those two have wrote other books that I love too, so I guess you can say they are my two favorite authors now. How did I start reading that book? It is kind of crazy how I started reading it. I went to Walmart and went the book section. I looked at all the books but the book cover of "The Cartel" stood out to me. That night I bought it & started reading it without knowing that I would be addicted to it. I stayed up all night and read that whole book. It was like each page made me more addicted, and I was so eager for the next book. Eventually I ordered all the books, which there are seven of them. I read those books at home, at school, at work, anywhere you can think of. That was by far the most exciting & dramatic book I have ever read and I think that is why I love it so much.

Did you know I did not like writing until i was in the 8th grade? Hate is a strong word, but I hated writing when I was younger. Truth be told I felt like I was not good at writing and it was too much work. My English teachers knew I did not like writing because I would always tell them. Also, I did not like reading all that much but I still read when I had to. It seemed like the more my hate for writing grew the more I actually had to write. I had even told myself that I would not get a job that required me to write a lot. As time went by, it started to grow on me. I started to hate writing less and less each day. Eventually, I started writing for my own enjoyment and not just because I had to. Now I love writing more than anything.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors. I could read about him all day and I could definitely read all of his story all day too. Poe has a dark side and he wasn’t scared to write about it. Not many authors in his time did that. I think that is why I love him & his stories & poems so much. The first time I had heard about him and his stories was while I was in middle school. It was my 7th grade year to be exact. My teacher told us about "The Raven" and when we began to read it I fell in love. I went on to high school to learn more about him & to hear more of the things he wrote. My love for his stories grew stronger & stronger. My favorite story of his is "The Tell Tale Heart" I just loved the darkness of it & the dramatic features that it had. Poe was a brilliant writer and he inspired me so much in my literacy life.

For everyone the way you feel when you read is different. Some people hate reading, other may think that it is stressful. Other people may like reading and think that it is enjoyable. Me? personally I love reading. I would not necessarily say that I read every book but I give all books a try. Reading mysteries makes me feel like a queen or a princess, and reading romance stories makes me feel butterflies and love. The feeling I feel when I read is kind of undescribable. Reading takes me to another world with just me in it. I get a tingle feeling and it is the most satisfying feeling in the world. When I read that is my time to get away from everyone, everything, and every problem.

Going to the school's book fair were the highlights of my Elementary school years. Back then I did not like English as much as I do now, but I still loved going to the book fairs we had. I was so excited to see all the books, posters and, magazines. I would go to the book fair everyday that is was there and buy something different. The fair was so colorful and filled items that would interest me. I think that was why I was so excited about it. There were shelves of books, crazy pens and pencils, stickers, anything you could think of. Book fairs made me so cheerful and I was actually eager to find new books to read. As I got older & started junior high the book fairs stopped of course. I still reminisce about going to them & the excitement I had.

H is for high school English. Going into a new school I had heard of a lot things good and bad about high school. The more I had heard about it the more nervous I got. Everyone was telling me about the classes in high school but English had stuck to me most. There was going to be harder work, longer work, and shorter due dates. I finally got to high school and quickly found out that freshman English was not for me. Now that I look back at it it was easy. Back then I thought it was the hardest subject ever. Sadly, I ended up failing my first English class in high school. I had to go to summer school to make my grade up. I was lucky that I had a successful 3 years after my downfall. I really had to buckle down and get serious about English.

I is for imagination. Everyone uses their imagination throughout their lives. I think almost everyone uses it when they are reading something that has no pictures. My imagination plays a big part in my literacy life. Why? Well because most of the books I read does not have pictures. So when reading I like to imagine what the characters look like, what the setting looks like, and etc. My imagination roams every time I read a book, but the book that I imagine the most on is “The Cartel.” The book has no pictures at all, but the authors are so detailed about the characters appearances. So my imagination plays a big part in my literacy life. Especially while I am reading.

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park was my favorite book of all time when I was younger. It was the first book I actually liked to read. Those books were so entertaining & funny. I loved going to my school's library just to check out one of those books. I think I loved everything about the book. The characters, the situations she went through, and the funny things she said. It was absolutely hilarious. When I started reading Junie B. Jones that is when I wanted to start writing my own books. So basically reading those books inspired me to write my own. Still today I read Junie B. Jones books. Just to remind myself where I started.

Libraries are basically my second home. I am always in some library. Some people do not like it because it is too quiet. It being quiet is what I love the most about it. I feel like at a library there are no distractions. Anyone could get their work done in peace at a library and if they need information it easy to get it while you are there. While I was in high school I went to the library every single day it was open. Just to get some kind of work done or just to check out a book. I feel like the library has helped me a lot, because I get distracted very easily. Being somewhere it is quiet and less distractions is good for me. Being able to do my work and being surrounded by lots of books makes me very happy. I guess that is why I love libraries.

Ms. Coszet Jones was my favorite teacher and she was an important figure in my literacy life. During everyone's years in high school most likely they will have a favorite teacher. While I was in school my favorite teacher was & still is Ms. Jones. I met Ms. Jones when she was my teacher during my sophomore year in high school. In the beginning we didn't get along, but it ended great. She was my favorite teacher because instead of just teaching she actually helped. Ms. Jones pushed me to do better, gave me new books to read everyday, made me write until I could not write anymore. I proceeded on to my junior year and  again she was my English teacher. That year she pushed me even harder and by the end of that year I was sure that I wanted English to be my major. I went into her class barely liking the subject English and left with English as my major. I didn't have Ms. Jones as my teacher my senior year, but I visited her every chance I got. I was even her student aid for her freshman class. She still helped me when I needed the help. Ms. Jones changed my mind about English & made it my major & my favorite subject

Not a fan of Harry Potter books? I am not a fan either. It is a well known book and a lot of people have read it and found it interesting. Me on the other hand, I found it to be very boring. I love to read and I give new books a try. I finally tried to read it a couple of years ago. I started out strong with the book but I could not take it an more. I think I read at least 10 pages then I dozed off. I have tried a numerous amount of times to read the book, but failed every time. At first I thought I did not like it because I could not understand most of the words. I expanded my vocabulary and gave it a second try. I soon found out that not understanding the words was not the problem. It was just I simply was not interested in the book. So yes, I do not like Harry Potter books.

Poetry is really relaxing to read and to write. At least that is what I think. I really started getting involved in poetry my sophomore year in high school. The first piece of poetry I fell in love with was “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe. Since then I would read poems non stop. I would go even further to writing them. Every day I became more and more interested about poetry. I always tried to discover new poems to read everyday. My all time favorite type of poetry is Narrative. I love when people tell a story but does it in a poem. Dark poems, happy, sad, even romantic ones. I love all of them and will continue to read them.

Questions should be asked every time you read a book. Not everyone does that, but I definitely do it. Every time I read a book I always ask myself questions sometimes I will even ask the question aloud. I love reading mysteries because most likely you are going to have to ask yourself questions. Questions like: Who is the main character? What was the problem and how was it solved? What will you predict what will happen next? There are a lot more questions but these are a few. It is helpful to ask questions to have a better understanding of what you are reading. Who wants to be confused while reading something.
