Typography #4
For this piece, I wanted to follow in the style of #3 but simplify it so that it would be more appropriate to use alongside the rest of my word rather that being a point of focus which is more worthy of a front cover like #3.

Typography #3
Inspired by Cocorrina’s typography, I wanted to try merging the capital letter ‘V’ with an image. I think this worked quite well and allowed me to add “The World is” at a slant alongside the image following the direction of the ‘V’. I chose to fill in the lager letters with my print designs so that it was a similar concept to my photo montage pieces.

Typography #2
Again, block capitals filled in with my print designs. Arrangement inspired by Fimbus’s typography I studied but I made “Vivid” italic so it would stand out from the other words. I don’t think this layout worked too well for my title as the length of the words are so varied.

Poster by “Fimbis”
What I like most about this typography is that each letter is a different colour to the one next to it with some form of texture behind it so it isn’t just a simple block colour. This adds texture and character to the poster. The actual font used is very simple and, because all of the letters are in block capitals, this means that they are all even in height also. There is also a pattern in terms of layout; the sentence has been broken up into pairs with the first word always being on the left and the second is offset to the right and always slightly overlapping the last. Each pair of words has a slight gap before the next pair begins and all of the pairs have been positioned so that they’re central to the poster. I chose this typography as it is simple and yet effective.

Cover for Showroom Magazine. Issue Two 2007.
The concept behind this cover is very simple yet very effective. The fact that the model is wearing a completely monochrome outfit allows the colourful ‘S’ to be even more dominating. It has been coloured in a rainbow-like effect with very rich and vibrant primary colours which in itself is very powerful in effect. The ‘S’ is to presumably symbolize the title of the magazine and so the directors of the magazine will have wanted this to stand out. The chosen font is in all block capitals and is very minimalistic in style which in this case compliments the other elements of the cover. They have used only one font type for all of the written elements on this cover which gives it a sense of unity. Also, everything in this cover has been positioned in the centre of the page - especially the ‘S’ which is completely central which would draw your eyes to it even if it weren’t so huge in proportion to the rest of the cover.

Illustration and Typography by Corina Nika aka Cocorrina
The style of this piece is very minimalistic both in terms of fonts used and colour pallet. I particularly like how Cocorrina has combined an image with a simple letter ‘h’ to summarize the theme of the project. The choice of imagery works well with the shape of the letter as well as creating a narrative. All of the colours in this piece are fairly muted with it mainly being made up of soft greys, whites and blues. However, Corrina does draw attention to the main title of the project by firstly using a hand-written styled font which is drastically different to the other fonts used because of the irregularities in terms of lettering size and the letters not being level to one another and also because of the fact that this is the only word written in jet black. This instantly draws your attention when looking at the piece but because it is only written quite small it doesn’t completely distract the audience from the other elements. The fact that the letter ‘h’ and the photograph are so big in comparison almost balance this.

“The Munchies Project” by Luke Choice
For this piece, Luke Choice has really tried to encapsulate the theme of the project with the typography by making it appear to be written out of cake icing with some of the letters even having “sprinkles” for effect. Because of this, the words look almost 3 dimensional in appearance like they are lifted from the screen. The colour scheme consists of pinks, purples, blues and yellow which are bright yet almost pastel like simultaneously. Choosing such bright and playful colours compliments the subject matter which strengthens the theme of the project. It makes sense that the font has been created graphically to compliment the superficial elements of sugary, artificially produced foods. This choice of typography is very bold which is why it can be a stand alone piece without the need for a background.

Work in Progress…
Like most of the examples I looked at, I wanted to hand draw my illustrations and then colour them by using a mix of materials. This is the start of my first sketch which I started by sketching in pencil and then using pen to outline and define.

Illustrator: Brooke Hagel Illustrations of Marchesa’s 2016 collection.
The style of these illustrations reflects the feel of the garments illustrated - sleek, elegant and feminine. Although all the hairstyles have been kept uniform, each illustration has its own unique position and they have all been places together in a way which creates a balanced, unified collection. I particularly like how subtly Brooke has illustrated the faces of the models by using a mixture of lines and facial features. This makes the face easily identifiable and yet keeps the style simple and minimalistic. To create the illustrations, Brooke first creates a sketch and then from there uses paints to add colour, texture and detail. As seen in the photograph above, she uses an extremely fine brush which allows her to create the fine lines on the garments which give the impression of a floral pattern or even lace. This can be very difficult to do in the media and needs a lot of patients and precision to make it work.

Designer: Rebecca Minkoff Spring/Summer 2014 Collection
The style of Rebecca Minkoff’s fashion illustrations are very sketchy by giving only hints as to the features of the model. There has been no use of photoshop for these illustrations which appear to be made up from a mixture of materials such as pencil, pen and pro marker. I like how she has kept her style very linear with next to none of the lines are drawn with a curve - instead choosing to create the illusion of cures by using a variety of short, straight lines. I also like how she has kept the use of colour quite simplistic also with only hints of flesh tones apart from on the garments where the colour can become very bright and intense. This draws the audience’s attention immediately to the garments.

Designer: JC Munoz Graduation Collection May 2015
When I first came across these illustrations I thought that they must have been rendered completely by using digital methods. However, upon further inspection, I realised that the style of the illustrations appeared more hand-drawn and that (although the look symmetrical) there are slight differences between the left and right sides which means that they have been drawn out as a whole rather than flipped and repeated on photoshop like I had previously thought. In contrast, the figure has been drawn once and then repeated for each design which is rather fitting for this line-up which is already so meticulous. I believe JC Munoz used pen to create the completely monochrome illustrations. He has also used a variety of drawing techniques to create texture and pattern to differentiate between the different fabrics which is essential with a  completely back and white collection.

Illustrator: Hayden Williams “Floral Fantasy”
What I like most about this illustration is how Hayden has managed to imitate the floral print and simplify it down in the process. He appears to have done this by drawing a few ‘squiggles’ in a rose shape in pro-marker and then added depth to them by adding a touch of black or dark blue to the centre. This may or may not have been done by hand as when you look at the rest of the illustration everything else (especially the skin and hair) look like they have been computer generated so I imagine he might has just used a brush in photoshop that give a similar effect to that of a pro-marker. The pose of the model is very stylized and has an almost ‘air-brushed’ effect to it. Although this gives the illustration a very bold look, I’m not sure it is the style that would work well to illustrate my collection. I would, however, like to try to recreate something similar to the floral print when it comes to illustrating mine.

Illustrator: Alex Tang “Street Style”
Alex Tang creates very beautiful and detailed fashion illustrations. From studying her work, I imagine she either uses pen to initially draw out her sketches and then colours them using a program like photoshop or does them straight onto the computer making them completely digitalised. Although her sketches follow the illustrative proportions, she somehow manages to make her creations appear quite realistic. This is perhaps due to the amount of detailing which goes into each illustration - you can see this just from the floral printed trousers in the illustration above. I also quite like how she has only coloured the garments, eyes and mouth of the model and left the hair and skin black and white with some greys for shading. This allows the focus to be on the garments and less on the model as a whole.

Illustrator: Ekaterina Koroleva “Serpentine”
I like the simplicity and sketch nature of Ekaterina’s style. For this piece, she mentions that she has used only two materials to make up this illustration - pen and ink which she has used in contrasting effects to make maximum impact. For the pen, she was kept the lines very think and delicate using it only to outline the features of the face and then add depth to some select ares by using a combination of straight lines drawn closely together. In contrast, she has been very bold with the ink choosing a vibrant orange to highlight to colour of the cheeks and using a bold zig-zag print and the bottom in black to signify the print of the top. To apply the ink, I imagine she has used a very thick brush as you can almost see the individual strokes used to make up the zig-zags.
