When Hair Restoration Surgery (HRS) was first popularized by Orentreich, the primary graft used was the “standard” 4 mm round punch graft. However, over the past 10 years we have seen the introduction of much more diversity with respect to the size and shape of grafts.

The 'before' photo shows our male patient in his 30s with a clear M-shaped hairline, a sign of moderate hair loss. He was so bothered by the thinning of his once thick and full hair so Dr. Ron Shapiro stepped in to help.
After the initial consultation, Dr. Shapiro developed a hair transplant plan tailored to his needs and desired results with FUE as the chosen method of hair transplant surgery. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a type of hair transplant surgery that involves removing follicular units from the donor zone, typically the sides and back of the head, and carefully transplanting them into areas where hair is thinner or absent.
One of the reasons why FUE is a popular option for hair restoration is that FUE is less invasive than other hair transplant techniques, like the strip FUT method, which involves removing a strip of scalp from the back of the head. As such, recovery time is often quicker with an FUE procedure.
The 'after' photo, taken a few months later, shows a major transformation. The M-shaped hairline is now filled in, giving him a younger, more natural look. Each transplanted hair follicle has grown healthy hair. There's also more hair on the crown of his head. This case is a great example of Dr. Shapiro's expertise in FUE hairline restoration.

Feeling conscious of his receding hairline, this patient sought out the expertise of Dr. Shapiro. Thin wisps and a noticeable sparsity characterized his hair - a stark contrast to the vibrant, thick hair he once felt confident having. Determined to reclaim his youthful appearance, he embarked on a hair restoration journey through Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant surgery at the Shapiro Medical Group.
For this case, Dr. Shapiro meticulously extracted individual follicular units from denser areas at the back of the patient's head. Using a state-of-the-art FUE device, these grafts, containing 1-4 hairs, were isolated with precision, ensuring the donor site was left with minimal scarring and the grafts are viable.
Post-procedure, the patient braved a brief period of redness and minor discomfort, his scalp knitting itself back together as the new grafts anchored themselves in. The transplanted follicles settled in their new environment, slowly beginning to regrow.
Months later, the transformation was evident. The patient's hairline, once receding, now sported a healthy volume of hair. His former balding spots were replaced by thriving, natural-looking hair. The FUE transplant not only reinstated his hair but also revived his confidence. As the patient walked out of Dr. Shapiro's clinic, he wore a smile, his new, fuller head of hair a testament to the success of the procedure.

Look at this amazing transformation of our male patient who has longed to restore his hairline and regain his confidence.
Worried by the noticeable thinning of his hair and a receding hairline, our patient sought the expertise of Dr. Shapiro for a permanent solution to baldness.
With meticulous precision, Dr. Shapiro and his team performed an FUE hair transplant, expertly restoring our patient's hairline to flawlessly blend with his existing hair. The results are nothing short of extraordinary!
FUE hair transplant involves removing individual hair follicles from the donor zone, usually the back or sides of the head, and grafting them carefully onto the areas where hair loss has occurred.
This technique is minimally invasive and provides natural-looking results. Unlike FUT, FUE does not leave a linear scar from the donor area. However, it does leave “pin-point” scars that are almost undetectable when surrounding hair follicles have grown.

Patients can now choose from a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical solutions depending on their needs and preferences. One such advancement is the use of ACell and PRP as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with hair transplant procedures. If you’re not ready for a hair transplant, Acell + PRP for hair loss can be an excellent nonsurgical option.

Follicular Unit Excision Post-Operative Care
After Follicular Unit Excision surgery at our Minneapolis hair restoration clinic, a light dressing is applied and the patient returns the next day to have it removed. The scalp is inspected and afterwards, usually no dressing is needed. Patients will experience minimal discomfort and swelling of the scalp following FUE. Most patients will take oral pain medication for a few days later.
