Been watching some Franklin Expedition content and one thing is really starting to rile me up. People keep describing John Franklin as a 'good' man, a likeable man, even, at one point, a 'humane' man! He wasn't!

He and the 'esteemable' Lady Franklin KIDNAPPED *two* Indigenous Tasmanian children, sent one back to an orphanage after 'failing to civilise' him and *abandoned* the other when they left Tasmania.

This is NOT UNKNOWN, documentary and video makers! Don't fall for the late-Victorian trap - he wasn't even a good man *for his time* (there were other 1830s people who didn't kidnap any Indigenous children, and people who thought kidnapping Indigenous children was a bad idea!)

This is what the child the Franklin's kidnapped then abandoned said about what happened to her after they left:

John Franklin ain't some pacifist humanitarian hero -- I love the Terror & thoroughly have the brainworms but as an Australian, I want people to be a bit more thorough in their research into who this guy was *before* he was on that expedition. I *hope* a polar bear ate him - it's no less than he deserved! There were better men on those ships and they deserved better than their leader!

I was lucky enough to get chosen for the November page of 2024's Terror pin-up calendar :) I wanted to draw an ode to Stephen Stanley's old man beauty, while sticking close to the Terror setting.
