"It seems natural to face the season of the High Holidays with trepidation and anxiety, especially for women living with serious illness. Prayers about a ledger book where our deeds from the past year are recorded. One reading after another about women crushed by their desire to have a child. A roster of ways that people suffer. Just the name of the holiday Yom haDin, Day of judgment brings us up short." Chapter 3/3 The Road to Survivorship The hardest part of Aliza’s cancer diagnosis was the last day of treatment. Aliza wondered how she would be able to just pick up where she had left off and continue to live her life. Aliza wanted to settle down and move forward, but dating after cancer was a scary experience. “There would always be scars, and medicine, and hot flashes, and a dark cloud hanging over my head. Who would ever want to date someone who had been through what I had gone through?” While Aliza’s cancer was behind her, Sharsheret remained a constant in her life. Through Sharsheret’s survivorship program, Aliza had the tools to accept and adapt to her new normal. “Sharsheret gave me the hope that one day, despite cancer, I, too, would find my happy ending.” And a happy ending is exactly what Aliza found! Two years later, Aliza met Ian, the love her life, and got married shortly thereafter. And Sharsheret was right all along. Aliza’s cancer is the furthest thing from what defines her. Aliza is not only a proud cancer survivor, but also a wife, daughter, sister, friend, physician assistant, medical school instructor, and Sharsheret supporter. This Rosh Hashanah, join Aliza and become a Sharsheret supporter, too. Ensure no woman has to face breast or ovarian cancer alone. Chapter 2/3 Navigating Fertility And Cancer Before diving head first into treatment, Aliza’s doctors informed her that her treatment regimen would compromise her fertility. If Aliza wanted biological children in the future, her doctors suggested freezing embryos. “When I was 36 and single, I imagined getting married and having kids. Breast cancer stole all that from me.” With a long road ahead of her, Aliza found it hard to relate to her friends. One day she was visiting a friend in the hospital who had just given birth, and the next she was waking up at 5 AM for radiation before going to work. But there was a place where Aliza could turn where she was understood. Sharsheret’s social workers and peer supporters provided Aliza something no one else could – real empathy and the courage and strength to imagine a life after cancer. This Rosh Hashanah, give courage to women like Aliza and ensure every woman facing breast or ovarian cancer has somewhere to turn. https://ift.tt/2N13x1t from Sharsheret https://ift.tt/1YlG5Ik
