A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
The Destiny Path – Part V
Luke Skywalker recently lost his lightsaber in duel with Darth Vader.
The Dark Lord revealed that he was actually Luke’s father, the former Jedi Anakin Skywalker. Luke fled instead of joining his father and turning to the dark side of the Force.
Luke is more determined than ever to become a Jedi despite the shocking revelation. He has embarked on a quest to find a figure who has appeared to him in several visions through the Force. This mysterious woman may be a Jedi and may hold the secrets to shaping Luke’s destiny….
Interior. A cantina. “Luke Skywalker,” wearing some totally rad 80’s style shades, is bragging how to a couple of bored looking patrons how he’s the best pilot in the galaxy, just ask his trusty astromech, Ardee. She was handling the targeting computer for that last run. If he can blow up the Death Star, surely he can get the patron’s shipment where it’s going….

© Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel
Vader appears and breaks “Luke’s” neck for claiming the name Skywalker.
Vader tells the rest of the cantina patrons they survive because he wishes it. That claiming the name Skywalker also claims his crimes against the Empire.
© Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel
An Imperial Officer approaches Vader. “Did you find the Rebel you were seeking?” Vader instructs the lieutenant his intelligence is very much in doubt.
“No more false leads. Make sure every officer knows. If you find Skywalker, be certain before you call me in to apprehend him” Vader states. “I have business on Vendaxa, and while you have wasted my timer here, Skywalker could be anywhere.
(Note: This statement, from a timeline perspective, puts the start of this issue in between Darth Vader (2020) #1 and Darth Vader (2020) #2).
Space. Luke’s X-Wing approaches a planet. He thinks it may be the one in his visions. “Serelia. Never heard of it.”
A dock on Serelia. Luke approaches a hooded figure, and, well, in typical Luke fashion, just blurts out, “Are you, by chance a Jedi?”
The hooded figure responds as you’d expect. Dumps a net full of fish on him and R2 and takes off in a boat.
Luke takes another boat and tries to catch her.
Luke has a bit of trouble, that driving a boat isn’t as smooth as flying a ship. They are tossed overboard, and R2 is able to help them to shore.
It seems Luke also lost his blaster. “If something happens, I don’t know what --- uh-oh” and there is an explosion. Luke uses the Force to push R2 out of the way. He sends R2 back so that if Luke doesn’t make it back, someone can tell Leia what happened.
He continues through the cave.
He gets to a point where he is below the woman. When Luke says “Do… or do not… there is no.” he is cut off by the woman, who has “heard that one.” Luke states he means her no harm, he is training to be a Jedi. She says “I’m no Jedi” and that anyone who wants to be is a fool. She hits a panel.
She tells Luke he is stronger in the Force than she is, but she has one thing she is pretty good at. She can read people and tell when they are lying. He is telling the truth. He isn’t one of those “hunters.” Her name is Verla.
“So, you’re all caught up in this Jedi business, huh? Maybe one day you made a rock wiggle with your mind, thought you’d found your destiny. You’re a sucker.”
Luke questions her on the hunters and she replies, “Wow. You are really in over your head.”
She goes on to say someone told you all the good stuff about the Jedi, but left out all the bad. Doesn’t he wonder why there aren’t more Jedi around? Every hear about the purge? The Inquisitors?
“You know nothing, Luke Skywalker” (OK, she actually says, “You don’t know anything, do you?” but I like my Jon Snow reference better).
She tells him of Order 66 (RIP Aayla Secura, again. How many times do we need to see her die?), of the Inquisitorious, and their boss. The Monster of Monsters. Pure Evil. Darth Vader.

© Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel
She senses something. Why is Luke lying? What is he hiding from her?
“You’re Darth Vader’s son?” and she taps the panel again, and the water starts rushing in again.

© Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
I love that we got a bit of Vader hunting Luke in this issue. I’m also very interested to find out more about Verla. Was she a padawan or a knight at the time of the purge? If a padawan, who was her master? What is she doing on this planet? I have so many questions, and I can’t wait for the ride.
This issue also had a few Easter eggs, like a speeder like Han stole in Solo.
I’m interested most in the Luke side of what happened, so this issue was a treat. While Lando/Chewie/Leia getting to Han is going to be good to learn, I want to see what made Luke go from cocky “I have to save them” at the end of Empire to confident Jedi Knight in Jedi.
So, until next time, MTFBWY.

Darth Vader (2020) #3
I SENSE SOMETHING; A PRESENCE I’VE NOT FELT SINCE….
….well, early March.
This week Darth Vader (2020) #3 was released. Written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Raffaele Ienco.
No witty banter. It’s not the way of the Sith, so, without further ado….
SPOILER WARNING: This review/summary may contain spoilers for this issue, as well as any previously released Star Wars media (Films, TV Shows, Novels, Comics, Video Games) released to date, including #NotCanon. Also, this post may CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
Dark Heart of the Sith – Part III
Darth Vader revealed the truth: He is Luke Skywalker’s father. But Luke refused to join him and escaped.
Enraged, Vader has taken a squad of death troopers and the Imperial forensics droid, ZED-6-7, on a quest of revenge against everyone who hid Luke from him. Vader’s bloody journey has revealed an unlikely ally – Sabé, Queen Padmé Amidala’s former handmaiden.
Sabé has sworn to avenge her fallen queen. Now, Vader’s quest into his son’s past becomes a hunt for the truth of Padmé’s death. A hunt that compels Vader to return to Naboo….
Vader stands on the hill overlooking the lake on Naboo. He flashes back to when he and Padmé had their picnic there. Sabé interrupts. They are heading to the Naberrie lake retreat.
Vader instructs Zed to come along, and the Death Troopers to remain with the shuttle.
Entering the retreat, Vader flashes back to the scenes from Attack of the Clones that took place here. Upon entering, Vader senses….
An ATTACK! He quickly Force pushes both attackers. Sabé tells Vader to stop, these people are with her.
It is Captain Typho and Captain Tonra, formerly of the Royal Naboo Security Forces.
The assumed that Sabé was under duress when they saw Vader. When Zed asks if they actually thought they could defeat him, the respond no, but hoped to create enough time for Sabé to escape.
Vader states he’s had enough of this. No one attacks him and survives, unless they prove useful. Sabé explains she left the security footage with them.
As the proceed to a lower level to get the recording, they discuss the Padmé and Anakin centric events of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. They travel under the water to retrieve the recordings, in a ship like Jar Jar, Obi-wan and Qui-gon did in The Phantom Menace. The discuss what they have been doing, and Tonra states that Padmé sent he and Sabé to Tatooine to get Shmi. Unfortunately, she had vanished long before they arrived. They were able to free a few “pour souls” but not Shmi. It remains Sabé’s greatest shame.
They are then attacked by a Colo Claw Fish. This fish destroys their ship. As they swim to safety, Vader ignites his lightsaber and kills the beast. They then find one of the Gungan bubbles and get to safety.
They come across a mural of the final scene of The Phantom Menace celebration, with Boss Nass holding up the Globe of Peace. They reflect on Anakin and how, even as a child, he served their queen. They mourn his loss as they do Padmé’s.
Vader ignites his lightsaber and destroys the mural. He has had enough.
They retrieve the recording. Zed takes it and begins playing it.
It is a recording of Sabé and a group of mourners, including Typho and Tonra. They call themselves the Amidalans, and pledge to find who killed their queen, and kill them.
Vader tells them to explain themselves. They know that Padmé was heading to Mustafar to find Anakin. They later learn that Mustafar is Vader’s Domain. They accuse him of killing Padmé and Anakin.
He responds “Of course I did.”
They attack “For Padmé and for Anakin!”
The last page is a Sando Aqua Monster opening it’s mouth to eat the Gungan bubble.
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
This series is my favorite of the three mail titles launched so far. I love the “behind the mask” feel of it. Zed was quite most of this issue, but continues to impress. Now that Sabé and her crew have sprung their trap, what happens next? Turn in next month to find out. It’s sure to be epic, and hope that we see Vader struggle with (I assume) killing Sabé because she looks like Padmé.
With that, it’s time hope in my TIE Advanced x1 and return to Mustafar.
You don’t know the power of the Dark Side….

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
The Destiny Path – Part IV
Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian have returned to Cloud City.
While Leia investigated the carbon freezing facility that imprisoned Han Solo, Lando found his old friend, Lobot, and began to pollute Cloud City’s tibanna gas with his help, attracting the attention of Imperial forces.
While Luke searches through Cloud City’s waste for his lost lightsaber, Lando and Lobot are hunted by stormtroopers, and Leia has been captured by the Empire and frozen in carbonite....
Cloud City. Imperial Navy Officer Captain Tanch argues with a tech from Cloud City about the gas. They are interrupted by a Stormtrooper reporting in that they found the source – Lobot and Lando. Lando tries to get in touch with Leia and Luke.
Luke, meanwhile, is searching the trash for his lightsaber.
Lando decides to deal with the Stormtroopers. Lobot has a series of mouse droids attack the trooper. This allows Lando and Lobot to escape.
Meanwhile, two Stormtroopers are pushing the frozen Leia, debating on who she may be.
Back in the trash, R2-D2 encourages Luke to use the Force to try and locate the lightsaber. It doesn’t work, but as he reconnects with the Force, he realized Leia is frozen.
Elsewhere, Lobot and Lando are cornered by Stormtroopers. The troopers are then Force through a window, much like Luke was in ESB. It’s Luke!
Lando realized he didn’t find his lightsaber, but Luke replies “I stopped looking. I realized something important. A Jedi isn’t his lightsaber. A lightsaber is just a tool.”
Cut to the Ugnaughts in the trash where the Stormtroopers land. One of the Ugnaughts stumbles across the lightsaber.
In a hanger, Lando, Luke and Lobot see Luke’s X-Wing, an Imperial Transport, and many TIE Fighters. Stormtroopers are loading several prisoners, all encased in carbonite, onto a transport. Luke asks how they can free them.
Using the Force, Luke reverses the process, freeing them all. Since it’s been a short time, they do not suffer from Hibernation Sickness.
Luke liberates the weapons from the troopers, into the hand of Leia and the recently freed captives. Once the Stormtroopers are defeated, Leia invites the former prisoners to join the Rebellion.
They escape in the shuttle, and Luke in his X-Wing. Aboard the shuttle, the freed captives praise Lando for coming back for them. That he is a hero.
Luke tell Leia that there is something he must do. He has R2 look for all the world he saw in his vision.
“Destiny’s Calling.”
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
So, we are still waiting for the story of how Maz got Luke’s Lightsaber. This issue did a good job of moving the plot along, informs how Leia knew how to free Han from the Carbonite, and why Lando started to come around to the Rebellion.
Where is Luke going? Who will he meet there? I guess we will find out next issue.
So, until next time, MTFBWY.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
The Destiny Path – Part III
The Empire has broken the Rebel Alliance's security codes and is using this advantage to expose and destroy their dwindling forces.
Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia narrowly avoided Darth Vader's trap on Cloud City. But Han Solo was taken by the bounty hunter, Boba Fett, and Luke learned that Vader may be his father.
Luke's path is now uncertain. Strange visions of a robed figure with his lost lightsaber compel Like to return to Cloud City with Leia and Lando Calrissian to retrieve the blade....
We start with a shot of the Tarkin's Will destroying another Rebel ship. We learn that the Tarkin's Will was once called the Fortitude and was at the Battle of Yavin but sustained heavy damage due to the Death Star explosion. The ship was to be recycled for scrap before Vader gave it to Zahra with the purpose of hunting down the Rebels. Everyone on that ship lost someone on the Death Star.
Bespin. Lando and Luke approach in a shuttle, with R2 and Leia in tow. Lando questions why Leia tagged along. She says she has her reasons, which include keeping an eye on Lando. Upon approach, they are fired at by turrets, but Lando tells Luke to get closer. Lando then produces his "winning hand" and he presses a few buttons. The currents immediately stop firing.
When they land, they are attacked by Stormtroopers, but escape. Luke and Leia go on their separate errands. Luke heads to the point where he lost his hand. Leia heads to the Carbon Freeze Chamber, and Lando stumbles upon Lobot, who is connected to dozens of tubes in what looks like a server room. (For a bit of continuity, there is a deleted scene from Empire Strikes Back that we see Lobot captured by Stormtroopers). Lando connects to Lobot and turns the processed "bad gas" right back into the city ventilation.
Leia is trying to learn how to reverse the carbon freeze controls when she is stunned by Stormtroopers. More Stormtroopers arrive at Lando's position, he calls Luke to create a distraction. Luke says, "I'm about to enter the smelting room where my lightsaber should be, I'll grab it and be right there."
The next panel is Like in front of this massive pile of junk that looks like the Lestrange vault after the protections begin. Luke simply says "Fantastic."
We then see an Imperial officer being informed that they've caught a saboteur, what should they do. The Captain complains "Can't anyone take initiative?" and tells them to deal with it. We cut to two Stormtroopers in the Carbon Freeze Chamber chatting. "Prepare the prisoner for transport. Save the Empire a few credits, use the new method." They discuss Vader. "Don't get me wrong, he's terrifying, but you can't argue with the results." The final frame is Leia, frozen in carbonate.
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
So far, I am loving this book.
That last image was fantastic, Leia in carbonite. A nice little twist, and a perfect cliffhanger. I think this is the midway point on this story arc, so I'm excited for the next few issues to see where it takes us.
Anyway, until next time, MTFBWY.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….
The Destiny Path – Part II
The Rebel fleet had been scattered following the Battle of Hoth. After losing Han Solo to Darth Vader's bounty hunter, Princess Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian returned from Clout City aboard the Millennium Falcon to find a rebel fleet under attack.
But Leia's daring plan allowed the fleet to escape. In the battle, a wounded Luke tapped deep into the Forde to destroy an entire squadron of enemy fighters.
And after learning that Darth Vader is his father, Luke now questions his destiny as a Jedi....
Leia and Lando discuss whether Lando can be trusted. Luke, still missing his hand, an Leia discuss with Lando how they can find Han. Lando and Chewie prepare to leave to head to find out if Jabba yet has Han.
Han and Chewie, in the space above Tatooine, encounter a squad of Tie Fighters. The Ties are defeated by another squad of ships looking for Solo, assuming he is on the Falcon.
We learn that these are pirates, looking for Solo to settle a score. Lando strikes up a deal with them.
Back at the Rebel Fleet, discussions on how to move forward occur. The Damerons are once again in this briefing room and they discuss how to go about communicating under the assumption the Empire has their codes.
Lando is now meeting with Jabba to sell Jabba on some Tibana Gas. Jabba isn't biting, because he knows Cloud City is now under Imperial control. This was all a ruse to see if Jabba had Han.
Back at the fleet, we get a little history lesson, courtesy of Commander Grek Dameron. He talks of the time of the HIGH REPUBLIC (I didn't, obviously, pick up on this in my first reading back in January) and how the galaxy wasn't as settled, and the outer rim was more dangerous. They briefly discuss how beacons were used to communicate. That they can use this method for now. That there was a huge space station, and the station had an inspiring name. He then goes on to discuss Operation Starlight.
Back at Jabba's Palace, it is discovered that Lando arrived in the Falcon. He is threatened with being fed to the Rancor, unless he has something to offer. He tells them Han was frozen in carbonite and agrees to pass on any information he thinks would be of interest to Jabba from the Rebels. He is allowed to leave. Back on the Falcon, he tells Chewie that he is no use to the Rebellion and to drop him off.
We then see Luke training with a blaster and his new hand. Lando comes in and tells Luke he wants to return to Cloud City, but that Luke should be the one to say he wants to return. When Luke asks why he would ever want to go back, Lando indicates he may be able to help Luke locate his lost lightsaber.
We then cut to a black gloved hand, the person in what appears to be Jedi Robes, and black gloved hands. The hand reaches out to the falling lightsaber and grabs it and reaches out to Luke to "Follow your destiny."
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
Since I plan to post all four issues at the same time, I will save my thoughts for the Issue 4 review, and make it a cumulative Thoughts.
‘Til the Spires.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....
THE DESTINY PATH - Part I
The Rebel Alliance has been scattered following their defeat at Hoth. To evade the Empire, Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, Chewbacca and C-3PO fled in the Millennium Falcon in hope of finding refuge with Han’s old friend, Lando Calrissian.
But Darth Vader arrived at Cloud City first and forced Lando to take them prisoner as bait to lure Luke Skywalker into a trap. Leia managed to lead the others in a daring escape, though Han Solo was lost to Vader’s bounty hunter.
And Luke now reels from his defeat at the hands of Darth Vader....
“No. I am your father.”
Issue 1 picks up just as Vader slices off Luke’s hand during their battle on Bespin.
We are then abord the Millennium Falcon, just after Luke has had his hand enclosed in the cuff from the deleted scene.
Chewbacca and Lando are arguing about going after Han. They all made their choices, Lando points out. They maybe could have gotten Han if Leia didn’t insist on going back for Luke. Lando asks what makes him so special.
“His name is Luke Skywalker, Lando. He destroyed the Death Star.”
The Falcon crew (Leia, Lando, Chewie, R2 and 3PO) discuss next steps when Luke seems to clear from his thoughts. “Where is Han?”
After bringing him up to speed, Leia realizes they can’t save Han just yet, but maybe they can save everyone else. They will return to the fleet.
The Mid Rim. Rendezvous Point Delta-Three
We then cut a fleet getting destroyed by the Imperials. We then are introduced to Commander Zahra of the ISD Tarkin's Will. She is the one coordinating this attack, and she appears to enjoy hunting and destroying the Rebel ships.
Next, we are introduced to Green Three, pilot of an A-wing, and a Rebel Army soldier watching the events outside. These are the Damerons, mother and father to one Poe Dameron. The Millennium Falcon arrives, and ultimately turn the tide of the battle, with what appears to be Luke destroying/disarming several Tie Fighters through the Force. There is an attack run on the ISD, which allows the remaining Rebels to make the jump to lightspeed and escape.
Commander Zahra then contacts Darth Vader to inform him of the events. Vader makes clear that in the future, he does not want that ship destroyed.
At the Rebel rendezvous point, there is discussion on how two Rebel fleets, in different locations, were found at the same time. They determine that the Empire must have broken the Rebel codes. They try to determine how they can communicate going forward.
The issue ends with Luke talking to R2, reaching out to try and contact Master Yoda or Ben, and getting angry they don't respond. This causes Luke to question what he is to be.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
Since I plan to post all four issues at the same time, I will save my thoughts for the Issue 4 review, and make it a cumulative Thoughts.

Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars #2
Today I’ll be talking about Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars – Battle Tales #2. To remind folks, this is a younger target audience book by IDW Publishing. But it promises some great Clone Wars action, so I am in! this issue is written by Michael Moreci, Artists are Derek Charm (main story) and Megan Levens for the flashback.
SPOILER WARNING: This review/summary may contain spoilers for this issue, as well as any previously released Star Wars media (Films, TV Shows, Novels, Comics, Video Games) released to date, including #NotCanon. Also, this post may CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT!
The path to unity is guided by trust
<TomKaneVoice>
As the number of systems falling into Separatist control grows, Republic forces launch an aid mission on Hisseen, determined to halt their enemy’s progress. But as the Jedi pursue Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress, the clone arm is left to wage war without their generals…
</TomKaneVoice>
This issue picks up back on the planet Hisseen. Obi-wan and Anakin are engaging Dooku and Ventress while Plo Koon is trying to get a transmission to Commander Wolffe.
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
The transmission is unstable, but the coordinates Plo Koon sent arrive. Commander Cody tells Wolffe it’s his General, his decision. “Do I think the general would trust us clones to execute a mission on our own? Yeah…”
LOST FLASHBACK SOUND
The Nexus. A Trading Outpost floating above the planet Quarmendy.
Plo Koon and Commander Wolffe discuss their mission. The Wolfpack will be trying to take control of the outpost back, and save any hostages, while Plo Koon and other clone pilots provide a distraction.
Wat Tambor is here directing the battle droids. He sends Vulture Droids after the ships. He then brings in the one hostage, the Custodian of the Nexus, Orkle. She has managed to evacuate her people from the outpost. Tambor says the people hold no value, however, she may as a hostage.
We then see the Wolfpack jet over to the floating outpost. When discovered, they are attacked by D-Wing air support droids.
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
Wolffe manages to place a detonator on one and throw it back at Tambor and the droids. Tambor decides to flee, and destroy the outpost as he leaves. The clones manage to save Orkle and all return safely.
Upon returning to the LAAT, Wolffe apologizes to Plo Koon for failing. Plo Koon notes that he rescued the hostage and all his men returned. The destruction of the outpost was not his squad’s doing. And in war, you can’t hope for much greater.
Back to the story on Hisseen. Cody and Rex and their troopers get to the coordinates. There, they discover that the Separatists are holding the parliament hostage. They may not get another chance to rescue them, but it will be risky. They need to move on them now….
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
This series has already established a pattern. A few pages at the beginning and end of the book for the A story, and a B plot in flashback form for the majority of the book. This also allows for the primary artist (Charm) and the artist of the week. I am enjoying this so far, as I dig any Clone focused story.
It also seems as though there will be a lesson each week, which, again, since this is a younger focused book, makes perfect sense.
I should point out that though Anakin has the bit longer hair from earlier The Clone Wars episodes, but the clones are in their Phase I armor. So no Ahsoka yet. But I think we will eventually get there.
Until next time, May the Force be with you!

Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars #1
HELLO! YEEAAAHHHHH! THEY’RE BACK! Comics, that is.
Welcome to This Week in Comics – Star Wars Style!
This week marks the return of new books, starting with Bounty Hunters #3, which drops tomorrow. Today, I thought I would put together a quick review of a new series. Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars – Battle Tales. This is a younger target audience book by IDW Publishing. But it promises some great Clone Wars action, so I am in! this issue is written by Michael Moreci, Artists are Derek Charm and the team of Arianna Florean & Mario Del Pennino. The issue is a main story with a flashback in the middle.
SPOILER WARNING: This review/summary may contain spoilers for this issue, as well as any previously released Star Wars media (Films, TV Shows, Novels, Comics, Video Games) released to date, including #NotCanon. Also, this post may CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT!
Loyalty is not a virtue given; it is earned.
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
<TomKaneVoice>
A planet under siege! The Separatists continue their march across the galaxy, fueling the flames of war. Determined to prevent another system from falling into the Separatists’ grasp, the Jedi Council sends three of its most trusted Jedi and their clone battalions to stop the enemy in its tracks…
</TomKaneVoice>
This issue starts on the planet Hisseen. Timeline? Before the battle of Christophsis. We see the 501st attacking battle droids. Commander Cody comes into frame to ask Captain Rex about backup, so we have the 212th as well. As the battle droids keep pushing, Commander Wolffe joins Rex and Cody, so we also have the 104th battalion. Rex says they are getting terrific backup…
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
And we get the three Jedi Generals for each of these battalions: Master Plo Koon, Master Obi-wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker!
As usual, the arrival of the Jedi help end that particular battle fairly quickly. As the Jedi discuss going after Dooku and Ventress, they tell the clones to hold the position. Cody talks to Rex about “General Skywalker sticking to the plan.” He understands Anakin is “a bit of a loose cannon.” Rex states that while he is unconventional, he “always comes back for his men.”
IS THAT THE LOST FLASHBACK SOUND I HEAR???
Most of this story is a flashback, and illustrated by the team of Arianna Florean & Mario Del Pennino. It tells the story of Anakin and the 501st on the planet Benglor. It is a hot planet, and Anakin and the clones appear to be following something they realize may be a trap. Turns out it is a creature that ends up eating a clone whole. Bells for Bellow!
Hardcase disobeys an order to fall back and is attacked by the beast. Anakin orders Rex to get his men to safety and goes after Hardcase, saying “No one gets left behind.”
He quickly Force slows the beast, allowing Hardcase to escape.
Anakin thinks he has bested the beast, but when it turns to be more formidable, Rex returns and the two defeat it. Rex uses Anakin’s words “no one gets left behind” against him.
On their way back to the battalion, Rex mentions how they could have left Hardcase, he disobeyed an order. He also mentions “to be frank, this is what us clones are made for”
Anakin replies that they are more than soldiers, they are men whose lives are in his hands, and he doesn’t take that lightly.
© Disney/Lucasfilm/IDW Publishing
Back to the story on Hisseen. Cody, Rex and Hardcase are battling a few stray battle droids when a static filled transmission comes through. It is General Plo Koon calling for backup as we see Anakin and Dooku battling in the background.
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
This is going to be a fun series. Lighthearted, but totally on the Clone Wars brand. I believe the next issue comes out this week, so that will be good. Not sure if it will be 2 issues a month or one ongoing.
That’s all for now, and May the Force be with you!

Darth Vader (2020) #2
HELLO! YEEAAAHHHHH!
Welcome back to This Week in Comics – Star Wars Style! The second installment this week.
With the three releases this week, I will end up doing three posts. I had thought about waiting, but after reading all three, I’m more excited than I thought I would be about Bounty Hunters #1, a new ongoing series telling stories of a band of bounty hunters in the time between Empire and Jedi. I will review that one on Friday or over the weekend. One of the primary characters I know of from the 2015-2019 run of Star Wars Comics, but I bounced around those titles, so need to do a little more digging on him after reading the issue last night.
Also, if you haven’t already, check you my summary/review of the limited series The Rise of Kylo Ren, which I posted Wednesday night. Great conclusion to a good limited series.
This post, however, will focus on Darth Vader (2020) #2 by Greg Pak, illustrated by Raffaele Ienco.
Dark Heart of the Sith – Part II
Darth Vader revealed the truth: He is Luke Skywalker’s father. But Luke refused to join him and escaped.
Enraged, Vader has taken a squad of death troopers and the Imperial forensics droid, ZED-6-7, on a quest of revenge against everyone who hid Luke from him. Vader’s bloody journey led him from Tatooine to Padmé Amidala’s abandoned apartment on Coruscant.
And now he stands face to face with a ghost from his past. Does Padmé somehow live?
We start the issue in the great red POV aspect. Slight tangent here, and minor spoiler for the novel Thrawn: Alliances. I listened to that book, I didn’t read it. In that book, when Anakin would be using the Force in a fight, we’d get “double vision” and descriptions of what was about to happen. Something about it bugged me every time. I think it was the vocal direction. I wasn’t a fan. I get why it was needed, but it bugged me throughout the novel. Talking to others, mostly readers of the book, they didn’t have the same issue. Yet something here that is very much in the same spirit, I love. Guess it’s the difference between a visual medium and an audio one. (bleh, just thought of John Lithgow as Roger Ailes in Bombshell (a movie I enjoyed, actually). Bleh).
Back to the summary. We start in the red POV. It is the final act of Attack of the Clones. Padmé and Anakin about to be take out to the arena on Geonosis for execution. Padmé speaking, Vader responding. It seems our Dark Lord is still haunted by that kiss she never should have given him.
Vendaxa. Padmé asks, “What did you call me?” Zed scans and her and is amazed at the similarities. When she asks who he is, Zed responds, “Why, this is Darth Vader, the Emperor’s—” BLASTER FIRE!
Vader stops the bolt. He questions who she is. She says “Padmé Amidala, you said it yourself”
She continues on a four-panel page – all in red POV.
“…Queen…” – Padmé at the end of The Phantom Menace during the celebration, with R2, little Jedi Ani, Obi-wan and a handmaiden (Sabé) behind her.
“…Senator…” – Padmé in her apartment on Coruscant with Anakin and Obi-wan behind her.
“…daughter of Naboo…” – Padmé on the terrace by the lake.
“…back from the dead to haunt you to your grave.” – Padmé on Mustafar.
Back and forth over the next few panels of Anakin Force choking Padmé and Vader doing the same to “Padmé.”
They are then attacked by Vendaxan land squid and “Padmé” appears to escape.
Vader follows her. “Who are you? Tell me. Don’t be afraid.” Another parallel scene from the tunnel on Geonosis – “I’m not afraid.”
“Padmé” continues. “I’m angry”
Vader puts down his saber. “I see it now. Padmé is dead. But you wear her face. Speak with her voice. You’re the queen’s shadow. A handmaiden from Naboo.”
Zed kicks into gear, begins to point out the differences only a droid looking would notice.
It is revealed to be Sabé. She and Vader go back and forth over the events since Padmé’s death. They come to an agreement to make those that hid her pay.
Suddenly, they are surrounded by more creatures. Sabé admits that they opened the gate to let them in when she wanted Vader and Zed dead. “But now, maybe we’ve all got a reason to go on” and the fight off the brood together.
We get more red vision of events from Attack of the Clones side by side with the current events.
“You…fought well. Now come, we leave at once.”
Zed notices Sabé lingering. “When Lord Vader says we leave, we…”
“Droid, help me bury them” Zed protest, but Vader makes it clear he is to help.
When they are done, she comments that they were good soldiers who walked with her at Padmé’s funeral. “and they will be mourned. Not like you, Lord Vader. And not like me. No come, so you can serve your Emperor and I can have my vengeance.”
She informs them that after the funeral, they knew they didn’t have the whole story, so the went to Coruscant, and broke into Padmé’s quarters, and stole the security recordings. They were never able to decrypt them, so they hid them….
…on Naboo.
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
Just want to state the obvious one last time. In my review of Issue #1, I said, “That final page, though! Obviously, this will turn out to be Sabé.” Not going to get too big of a head here, it was the only logical conclusion. But it feels good to be right.
This series is my early favorite of the three mail titles launched so far. I love the “behind the mask” feel of it. Zed is an all-star caliber droid. Seeing Padmé/Sabé team up with Vader was great, too. Just like old times, so to speak.
With that, it’s time the deactivate the lightsaber and clip it to my belt.
Remember, the Force will be with you, Always.

The Rise of Kylo Ren (2020)
(This post was originally posted March 11, 2020)
HELLO! YEEAAAHHHHH!
Welcome to This Week in Comics – Star Wars Style!
As mentioned last week, this week there are three books. First up is the new ongoing series, Bounty Hunters #1, telling stories of a band of bounty hunters in the time between Empire and Jedi. There is also the second issue in the ongoing Darth Vader (2020).
Then, there is the conclusion of the limited series The Rise of Kylo Ren (Issue #4 (of 4)), by Charles Soule, illustrated by Will Sliney. This review will be a summary/review of the entire 4 issue series.
SPOILER WARNING: This review/summary may contain spoilers for this issue, as well as any previously released Star Wars media (Films, TV Shows, Novels, Comics, Video Games) released to date, including #NotCanon. Also, this post may CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT!
Long Ago.
The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 (of 4)
“I am called Ren. But that is not my name” The issue opens with a mysterious masked figure. He wears a cape, but no shirt. His mask is non-descript. Silver with some red markings. No facial features to speak of. Chunks of flesh missing on his arms and torso.
He is crouched in front of two brothers. They are hiding from the battle around them. Seems that Secsec and the Knights of Ren have both been looking for these two.
“Ren” appears to be Force sensitive, what he calls “touch the shadow” and he believes that one of the brothers is, too.
The young man shows that he can. The offer to “follow” Ren, who responds, “You don’t follow me, friend, you follow this.” And he ignites a red lightsaber. “The Ren.”
“The Ren doesn’t stop to worry about what it’s burning or the right or wrong of it, or the goals it might achieve. The Ren just is. It lives, and it consumes, and it doesn’t apologize. It is its nature and nothing else.”
Ren believes in that principle on a deep, DEEP level. He grabs the blade with his other hand “SSSizzle” He has, in fact, dedicated his life to it.
The brother could have all this, too. All that is required is a death. When the brother proclaims he’s killed more people than he can count, Ren say, “No. A good death.” It is understood Ren means his brother. As the boy questions this, we see a blaster fire. The young man falls to the ground, his brother the one who fired the blaster. He wants out. Ren comments that he’s “got the attitude. I respect that.”
“But you can’t touch the shadow” and he leaps, lightsaber ignited and kills the other brother.
Now, the Knights of Ren are gathered, dead bodies everywhere, they’ve ended the battle.
“Didn’t work out?” one asks.
“No. If it was easy to join us, everyone would do it. The master will find us someone soon enough”
Now. The Jedi Temple of Luke Skywalker.
We see a burning temple, with Ben Solo looking over it. A starship arrives, carrying Hennix, a Quarren male, Voe, a human female, and Tai, a human male.
They get no readings. Just Ben. They approach him and ask where Master Luke is. Ben responds that Luke attacked him. Tried to kill him in is sleep. “Now he’s dead.” Voe exclaims that this can not be.
Ben replies “What? Don’t think I could do it? I’m stronger than the three of you combined. Skywalker made us act like we were equal, but we’re not. I was the prize student”
Tai tries to speak to Ben. Says it couldn’t be as bad as he says. Ben responds that he is leaving, and they should, too. Hennix and Voe ignite their lightsabers (Blue for Hennix, green for Voe) over Tai’s objection. They can talk this out.
Ben tells them “None of you are Jedi.”
They battle. Tai eventually ignites his blue lightsaber.
Ben tries to leave. The three take him on. Reaching out to the Force, Ben causes debris to fly everywhere away from him, injuring Hennix. He initially looks a little shocked, but he tells them as he walks away “I warned you.”
He then returns to his ship. The three follow.
Ben’s droid asks where they are headed. That he hasn’t entered a destination. He suggests Hosinan Prime, to return “home”
Just then, a dark voice says “It happened, did it not? We both thought it might. Skywalker feared you, your strength. He was always small” and we get Ben’s view of the event as we did in The Last Jedi.
We then see a bit more. Just before the temple explodes. Ben watches it happen, cries NO! and runs to try and save people. “I never… I didn’t want this.”
The voice responds “And you did not choose it, Ben. The Jedi did. Skywalker.
Ben tells his droid that they aren’t going home, they are going somewhere else.
On the ship of the three others. They try to figure out what happened, how Ben could do this. They debate if they should tell Leia. The resolve to try and get to Ben.
Elsewhere.
A holographic planet surrounded by metallic rings yet connected by what appear to be roots.
Ben approaches Snoke, his throne made of stone, surrounded by lush plant life. He is pleased Ben came to him. Ben tells Snoke he’s been thinking….
….about the Knights of Ren.
The Rise of Kylo Ren #2 (of 4)
Issue 2 picks up right where the last issue ended. Snoke speaking to Ben on this strange planet. Snoke implies that while Ben Solo might be interested in the Knights of Ren, they may not be interested in Ben Solo. Ben responds that he hates that name because it is the name of two legends. Feels everyone expects him to BE Obi-wan. They are interrupted by a droid alerting of an incoming transmission from General Hux. Snoke tells the droid that Hux will have to wait, he’s in the midst of an important conversation. Ben is intrigued. Who is this Hux? Snoke states that while he is not the most social person, he does have other friends. He then gets back on point. What is Ben’s true name, then, if not Ben Solo? Snoke says “I was not born Snoke, I became Snoke. Who will you become?” Snoke can sense what Ben is thinking and thinks that is good, very good.
Snoke tells Ben that when he is ready to be called by that name, when he actually kills that part of him, he will be read. Ben leaves the planet.
Years Earlier
We are on a starship. Inside, we have a young Ben Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Lor San Tekka (Lightsabers and wands up, and bells for Max von Sydow). They are looking for a lost Jedi Outpost that Lor has heard about, and he mentions that it is probably High Republic era. Young Ben is visited by the dark voice, showing that it has been with him a while.
They land at a temple on the planet Elphrona. There are some touching scenes with Luke encouraging Ben. They enter what turns out to be a treasure trove of artifacts, including a Jedi Holocron. Luke comments that it may be better than Jocasta Nu’s cache. Just then, both Ben and Luke sense…
Cold.
It is the Knights of Ren. Claiming ownership of all that is there. Luke tells then how wrong they are, that these belong to the Jedi Order, which right now means him. He is the Last Jedi, though not for long.
“Ren” from the last issue states they will show this “old fool” what they can do. Ben interrupts by yelling “This is Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. He is a LEGEND!”
“Ren” responds that the Knights of Ren are LEGENDARY and ignites his red lightsaber.
Luke tells Lor to take Ben. Ben asks “What about you? There are seven of them!”
Luke responds “Oh, I’ll be just fine.”
A fight ensues. Luke handles them handily. It is down to Luke and Ren. Ren tells Luke to come get the blade. He probably can, but that he just activated the kill switch. If it leaves his hand, it will blow everything away.
Ren says he thinks he’ll just take his men and leave. On his way out, he says to Luke “you said you could sense the shadow in all of us – that’s right. We’ve all got it. But you know your apprentice does too, right? Powerful. Can feel it. Better be careful, Jedi Man.”
He then takes off his mask. He questions Ben if he is sure this is the path for him. That there are other paths. As he leaves, he leaves his mask and tells Ben if he ever wants to learn more of the about the shadow, come look them up.
We then are in the “present” – in the same temple on Elphrona. Ben enters and picks up the helmet. He puts it on. The helmet speaks to Ben. “Hey kid. Was wondering if we’d ever hear from you again.” He then tells Ben to go to the Vanrak system.
As he takes the helmet off and is approached by the three padawans, telling him “you have nowhere left to run.”
The Rise of Kylo Ren #3 (of 4)
The Mid Rim. Varnak.
The Knights of Ren are at what appears to be a bar. In walks Ben Solo. The two talk. Ben is presented with the “good death” from Issue #1. Ben says he’s killed a Jedi. Not Luke Skywalker. Ren says maybe the boys would like to hear this story.
Most of this issue is the story of Ben and the other three. Voe “thought the Force was a contest she could win” – Hennix thought the Force “was a Puzzle” and Tai “was just Tai”
Ben is explaining who these people were to him. During the flashed to the fight, it is clear that Ben just wants to leave, but they, especially Voe, won’t let him. At one point, he screams “you think I’m a murderer, Voe? IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT ME TO BE?” It looks like he kills Voe, but in actuality, it is Hennix. He then destroys the outpost.
Ren states that it was a death, but not a good death. Not good enough. Ben protests, but Ren says that he didn’t really want to kill him. But since Snoke vouched for him, they will let him spend some time with them. Maybe he’ll get that good death. But he needs some clothes. He looks like garbage, and the Knights of Ren have a reputation.
We then see Ben in an all-black getup.
We then return to the outpost. Voe and Tai force their way out. They vow to find Ben and end his path. Tai comments that he think’s Ben is already lost.
The Rise of Kylo Ren #4 (of 4)
Mid Rim. The Minemoon of Mimban
Ben, Ren and the Kinghts of Ren have a group of people on their knees. Ren is threatening to kill the leader if he won’t give him the information he desires. Ben stops him and says there could be another way. We see Ben reach out, causing the man great pain. It is the first time he’s done this.
Ben has obtained the information. Ren compliments the move. He then orders the Knights to “release them” Ben is shocked that they have killed them all. Ren says he did.
Ren expresses disappointment in Ben. Perhaps Snoke was wrong. Rai and Voe arrive. When asked who they are, Bn responds “The Past”
Tai tells Voe to go help the people while he takes on Ben. Ren goes on the attack, and Voe stops him. They fight. Meanwhile Ben and Tai are fighting. Ben explains that he has no choice. He is the son of the light and the dark. Tai explains that all paths have two directions. That it’s never too late, there is always hope. Ren and the knights are having a tough time defeating Voe.
Ben and Tai eventually are over a lava pool. Tai pleads with Ben. “Be who you---” and his neck is snapped – by Ren. He once again states that Snoke was wrong about Ben. They have the following exchange.
Ben “You killed Tai”
Ren “I sure did. Snoke was completely wrong about you. You’re fighting this every step of the way.”
Ben “You think so?”
Ren “You don’t want to live in the shadow.”
Ben “True” uses the Force to pick up Tai’s lightsaber. “I am the Shadow”
They fight. The Dark Voice returns “Now you will be who you are. Who you were always meant to be” and it appears to be Palpatine.
The fight continues. Ren saying Ben thinks he’s special. Ben responds that, no, it is everyone else who thought he was. This is a great double page spread. I’ll include it as the image from this issue.
Ben finally understands what Ren meant. “Here’s your good death!” and he kills Ren.
Then, he finds Voe. She says, “you killed the master.” Ben responds “of course I did. I’m a murderer, remember?” and kills her with Ren’s lightsaber. The Knights then all kneel around him.
We then see a shirtless Ben crafting a new lightsaber. He takes the blue crystal, clutches it in his hand, and with a raged strain, fractures it and it “bleeds”
He places it in the saber, and it is wild. It is coming out in odd places. He has an idea. He adds the now iconic hilt. He ignites the saber. The Dark Voice says, “What is your name?”
END
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
This was, overall, a good mini-series. Similar in the tone of the inner voice/conflict of the current Vader run. A good back story that still leaves plenty of room for further expansion. The final issue was exciting, and had some real stunning visuals.
I want to point out that this is the second mention of High Republic that I have come across in my re-reads for these reviews (the other was in the Star Wars title). It’s cool to note, because these issues came out before they announced what Project Luminos was.
When Ren first removes his helmet in issue #2, I originally wrote this. “He looks exactly like an older Ben, with grey hair.” – but I can’t find any corroboration online that this was intentional. In Issue #3 when they are together, they don’t look the same. So maybe it’s just me. Would be curious to hear from others who’ve read it.
‘Til the Spires, and May the Force be with you!

Darth Vader (2020) #1
(this post was originally written on March 6, 2020)
HELLO! YEEAAAHHHHH!
Welcome to This Week in Comics – Star Wars Style!
This week there are no new books. Next week, however, there will be three. There will be the conclusion of the limited series The Rise of Kylo Ren #4 (of 4), which I will do a summary/review of the entire 4 issues; Bounty Hunters #1, a new ongoing series telling stories of a band of bounty hunters in the time between Empire and Jedi; and finally Darth Vader (2020) #2. Since I didn’t do a review of the first issue, this week I will dive deep (DEEP!) into Darth Vader (2020) #1 by Greg Pak, illustrated by Raffaele Ienco.
Dark Heart of the Sith – Part I
Darth Vader failed to turn Luke Skywalker to the dark side. Luke escaped but now knows the truth.
He is Darth Vader’s son.
For the first time in many years, Darth Vader’s path is uncertain….
“Power. Strength. You are my son.” We open this issue with a POV of the lightsaber battle on Bespin. Right before Vader slices Luke’s hand off. As we progress through the fight, we get insight into what Vader is thinking. “Pain. Fear. This is what you need.” As the battle reaches its end, Vader is left watching, thinking how strong, yet how weak Luke is.
Vader, from aboard his Star Destroyer watched as the Millennium Falcon escapes, with Luke on board. We see Vader approach his shuttle, along with a few Death Troopers, and the comic relief of the issue, a Forensic Droid, Zed Six Seven. Zed is pleased that there are Death Troopers present, apparently on the same mission, as it will provide Zed with “plenty to analyze.”
As this is happening, we see Mas Amedda, via hologram, contact Admiral Piett on the bridge. He informs Piett that the Emperor requests Vader to make contact immediately. A nervous Piett, notices Vader’s shuttle leaving. He informs Mas Amedda that “Lord Vader is currently unavailable.” We cut to the Emperor, on Coruscant. He cackles in amusement.
Aboard Vader’s shuttle, we see Zed inquire about the mission. Before saying anything, Vader opens a panel on Zed, adjusts his motivator, and tell Zed “If you ever reveal what you learn on this mission… you will self-destruct.” Zed’s response? “Wonderful! I do appreciate thoroughness! Tell me everything!” to which Vader simply responds “Skywalker.” Zed states that he has disappeared without a trace. Vader replies that for now, the mission is to “track down everyone who made him (Luke) weak and destroy them.” Zed responds “then I imagine the best place to start is…”
The skies over Tatooine. We see a band of pirates intrigued by the Imperial shuttle with only four life forms aboard.
On the planet surface, Lieutenant Ardo Banch has assembled a small welcoming unit. He offers Vader assistance for whatever… as a Death Trooper comes up and starts “speaking” – I put this in quotes because the dialogue of the Death Troopers is illegible. Lieutenant Banch even remarks “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch –”
They locate the data terminal with local records. Zed plugs in and we are off to the Lars Homestead. As we look around the homestead, seeing familiar sites, Zed makes some commentary (there is little about Luke. He was adopted by Owen and Beru Lars, was known to have an affinity for flying) and we are treated to several POV visions/memories, all in the red & black style. Those visions/memories:
Shmi telling young Anakin to be brave and don’t look back
Meeting Owen and Beru
Telling Padme about the Tusken slaughter
Yoda “Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering”
Padme “Come away with me. Help me raise our child. Leave everything else behind while we still can.’
Anakin “We don’t have to run away anymore. I have brought peace to the republic. I am more powerful than the chancellor!”
Luke’s face when Vader tells him “Come with me. It is the only way.”
Padme “I don’t believe what I’m hearing”
Luke falling – turning into Shmi – turning into Padme.
Back to Zed. “You came to punish someone. But unfortunately, there’s no one left”
They come to the grave of Shmi. Vader uses the Force and clears the area.Red & Black vision. Anakin kneeling at that grave. “I wasn’t strong enough to save you, mom. I wasn’t strong enough. But I promise. I won’t fail again.”
Zed then notices Lieutenant Banch coming toward them on a transport. It seems they’ve picked up some transmissions--- BOOM!
The pirates from earlier have attacked. Out of the flames, it appears just Vader and Zed have survived. Vader clenches his fist. Zed “Ah! Of course! They may not be the specific traitors you were looking for, but you did come to punish!” as he brings the pirate ship crashing down and destroys it, and the pirates. The three Death Troopers (who were patrolling) come running, but the situation is over. Zed asks if they are done. Vader responds, “No, Droid… we have just begun.”
Coruscant. What appears to be Padme’s apartment. There is a large bust of her blocking the entrance. Vader tears it in two and enters. Everything is covered – sealed since her death. Zed says he is confused why they are there. Vader responds, “She was the mother.” Zed, thinking, “Ah, yes. This makes sense. Searching my data bank… a Jedi named Skywalker frequently served as her personal guard. Anakin Skywalker. They must have become…friendly” and we get a red vision of them kissing. Vader is asking if there are any traces. That only those closest to her would have know she was pregnant and stolen the boy. We learn the security recordings from around that time are missing. Zed then finds an insect size “scout transmitter.” Zed picks it up, tells it not to worry, they just want to find out to whom the insect droid is reporting.
The planet Vendaxa. A bunker under attack from some aliens. A Gungan comes in and tells the commander they must evac. “Not without the crew” a shadowy figure responds. “Crew’s gone!” the Gungan exclaims. Red fills a small frame. Vader enters, cutting down these aliens. Vader then turns. “What…”
The last page reveals who the shadow figure was. Vader, “Padme?”
To Be Continued.
Master Shast LeLow’s Thoughts
I have high hopes for this title. Like the prior two Marvel runs of Darth Vader comics, it really helps you get inside the helmet, find out what is going on in that scarred head of our fallen hero, Anakin Skywalker. Like the Clone Wars animated series, these comics really help fill in the story we know from the films, and how we got from a ruthless villain to a redeemed former hero.
What I loved about this issue is the way they handled the POV shots. The entire panel is black and shades of red. It’s why I used the image I did this week versus using the cover art. I just love the look of it.
That final page, though! Obviously, this will turn out to be Sabé, but thinking about the initial shock it must cause Vader is pretty cool.
Next week, I plan to do the full review/summary of The Rise of Kylo Ren series.
May the Force be with you!
