Keith falls for Lance the day he watches him fall in love with someone else.

Sounds dramatic, he knows; he and Lance are barely acquainted, barely seventeen, and Keith can barely stomach friendship, let alone love.

Lance is more object than person, and in a year he’ll cringe at his idealistic notion of ‘them’. But they’re barely seventeen, and Lance is a wild smile and tussled hair and late to every class. He’s a distinctive voice in the hallway and an overt laugh in the cafeteria, he talks at the speed of sound and has won the affection of the determinedly shy boy in their physics class (Hunk, Keith thinks his name is). Lance plays volleyball in spare period, and Keith grows attached to the way his voice cracks on the cheer during their pre-game huddle, and to the blue tank top adorning his tanned shoulders. As the match progresses it bleeds bluer as sweat makes the fabric heavy; Keith feels the same weight sinking his stomach.

It's a hopeless affliction. That’s Keith’s problem: he can never touch the things he cares about. He’s too brash, only knows how to push and grab. It draws the wrong kind of attention; nothing he grabs wants anything to do with him.

He watches Lance from afar, because if he makes his move he knows it’ll only come out as a push or grab, as a fight he wasn’t even asking for, because that’s the only way Keith knows how to get anything. So he watches and he slips, and though his fingers grapple for the slope, eventually he falls. He falls for Lance and the day he realises it, Lance drops to his knees in the middle of the library and unabashedly begs Cindy Owens to go on a date with him.

They become the talk of the Garrison, largely because they’re the most insufferable couple Keith has ever had the misfortune of laying eyes on (and he considers most couples a misfortune to lay eyes on). They spoon-feed each other lunch in the cafeteria, and trade kisses in the back of calculus class, and pass encrypted notes over the public messaging system while the whole class is learning to navigate star clusters. By the time Lance is spotted crying into Hunk’s shoulder cause they’ve broken-up, Keith is so sick of his disgusting romantic gestures toward Cindy that he’s blown their relationship to shit. He pushed, didn’t even attempt to grab, and from that moment on it’s Lance and Keith, neck-and-neck, finger on the nerve, and they don’t stand a chance.

Keith talks about how he hates children,

He thinks they're annoying little parasites. At least, that's what he says.

One day, Lance decides to bring Keith over for dinner, and his entire family is there, including the little ones. They immediately rush over to Keith and start tugging on his sleeves, urging him to come play, and to Lance's surprise, he laughs and goes along with them.

Keith spends most of the evening playing with the younger kids, giving them piggyback rides and chasing them around outside, all that fun junk, and by the end of the night, Lance is completely bewildered. On the drive home he turns to Keith and they have a little conversation that goes something like this:

"So, Mr. I Hate Kids, you looked like you were having a lot of fun out there."

"Well, it's your family, I can't exactly not play with them."

"You were enjoying yourself, weren't you, you big softie?"

"I was not!"

"You totally were!! I know that look you had!!"

"Just shut up and drive, idiot."

It doesn’t take long for Keith to arrive at the piano bench, unfolding his arms and pulling it out with both hands. He sits down, hair bouncing, and lifts the cover from the piano keys. Reverently, Keith’s fingers hover over black and ivory like a sinner kneeling at the pulpit.

Nobody moves, thinks, or breathes, they give the entire space that they take up to Keith. His bare fingers touch down on the keys and never stop moving.

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
