Celebrating a #FirstDayOfSchool win but also a #SanDiegoTheatre community loss. I was so lucky to have been able to help workshop this new TYA work #HOOPLA in 2021 with a rockin’ cast & now we’re finally bringing it to full life in 2022! Forever thankful for the team at @lajollaplayhouse 🎭 But today, I also woke up to a message asking if it was real that a theatre in San Diego just opened an all-white cast… to which the answer is, unfortunately, yes. It has been a dream to get to step away from the San Diego theatre community since we moved. To see the diverse works and artists working and thriving in other communities. People don’t believe our stories when we talk about the problematic things that have happened in San Diego. Alas, they’re all true. We need to do better. We need to produce more equitable, inclusive, and diverse works- otherwise our art form will die. We need to stop catering towards one audience demographic- we need to have our stages represent our world if we to continue to have artists interested. WE NEED ACCOUNTABILITY in producing trauma-informed work that creates SAFE environments for all artists to work. How? Hire consultants. LISTEN to the community members speaking out. I got the sweetest reminder the other day. During this #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth, it’s important to celebrate & uplift #FilAm stories & voices. But sometimes you’re reminded that YOU have been that spark of joy for a young mind watching you work. Incredibly blessed to have had all the opportunities that I’ve had in this career thus far- I personally didn’t have many Fil-Am artists to look up to so the idea that young Fil-Am artists are able to push through & find success (personal & professional) is awe-inspiring. 10+ years ago was JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT @sandiegomusicaltheatre. Truly an incredible experience with this cast & crew that I’ll never forget. Getting to meet & work with the young talent in the Children’s Chorus was one of my absolute favorite parts of this experience. Literal STARS were in this children’s chorus (thanks to you @kidzonstg)! One of the kids (now an adult) was Filipina @kayleepaigee. It is amazing to see the incredibly articulate & talented person she is today as a Fil-Am artist ready to take over the world! Feeling nostalgic since #InTheHeightsMovie is out NOW @hbomax. #TBT to it being one of my first #Broadway shows I saw. @brandonjoelmaier and I had tickets to a matinee preview. I didn’t know anything about it, except that it was amazing because @rachelhochroth worked on the workshop (thank you for the hospitality as well!). Show time rolls around… we’re holding. 10 minutes after show time became 15… became 20… the show was on hold due to technical difficulties. Some more time passes, #LinManuelMiranda comes out on mic to explain the situation as they tried to fix the problem. And since he had the mic, OF COURSE he just had to freestyle to entertain us. His 4th grade teacher was in the audience with her class. It was amazing to witness. Someone runs onstage with bad news- the sound board lost ALL the sound cues and the show had to be cancelled. I was crushed. They let us sign up in the lobby to receive a free Cast Album that they had just recorded the previous week. We were also able to schedule a new day in the week to see the show. When we finally saw it a few days later, LET ME TELL YOU I WANTED TO GIVE A STANDING OVATION AFTER EVERY NUMBER. And I mean it. It blew me away. It changed the way I saw “Broadway” and what storytelling could do. I will never forget. I also think it was the first Broadway stage I ever set foot on thanks to @robinofjesus! And I told myself I would do this show one day- I didn’t care what role… and later that became a reality! (See upcoming post on that.) Post #3! GALAXY’S EDGE & Virtual Queues. I’m leading with the positive... #RiseOfTheResistance is MAGNIFICENT. It blew any other attraction I’ve ever been on clear out of the water. With that said, Virtual Queue (as of RN for RotR) gets a boot. Nearly impossible/all luck in the timing for grabbing the 7am Boarding Group. I was literally on at 6:55am watching the clock, but by the time the system linked my tickets, they were gone. We luckily had luck for the 12pm release (and the cheers from the other lucky people were hilarious and even more hilarious were the people like... “What’s going on? Why are people cheering?”), but it kinda really sucks there isn’t a standby way if you either A) don’t know about it, or B) don’t get lucky enough to get a group. This may have been my only trip in a bit and I would have been V upset if a boarding pass wasn’t secured. I look forward to when it, at least, goes back to needing to be in the park to be able to secure a Boarding Group. The virtual queue was good, however, for #IndianaJones (even the it broke down right before we got to the steps inside). This trip was also our first time in #GalaxysEdge. It was one of the first places we hit, & while the construction & theming were exquisite, we felt like we were missing the hype a bit. Is it different because of this COVID Edition of Disneyland? Large spaces with nothing going on... is it usually this boring? Juztine at least spotted some repurposed Mediterranean lanterns from the now DEMOLISHED Aladdin’s Oasis (😭 the last thing Walt dedicated to the park is now GONE [first a tree, then a stump with a plaque, now nothing]). I also spotted this hidden Mickey heading into Smuggler’s Run. I feel like we missed out on the full Smuggler’s Run experience because of COVID? Was there supposed to be more storytelling in the beginning before you sit down and start?
