went to an elementaryschool musical production and they started the show with the director saying: "Now there's some very small viewers here today, so just so you know. There will be a scary character later in the show. This is her," and a girl in a kinda scary ghost outfit did a creepy walk across the stage, the stood up straight and did a cheery wave, "but remember, it's just Nina. She's pretending to be scary."
Aaaand i would very much like for horror movies to have that as a little bonus feature you can chose. Let me start a movie with Guillermo del Toro showing me a scary ghost that might jump at me, but don't worry, thats just Doug!

You always follow the rules. But it's not because your sense of morality tells you to. You just don't know how much rule breaking you can get away with.
You're quiet when expected to be quiet. But it's not because you actually understand why it's important to be quiet at the time. You just have no one to talk to.
You don't gossip. But it's not because you understand that gossiping is wrong. You just have no one to gossip to, and you don't know how much gossiping you can get away with.
You never use drugs. But it's not because you understand how harmful they are. You just don't have access to them because of your lack of social interaction.
You never get angry. But it's not because nothing bothers you. You just don't know how to express your anger, or you don't know how much anger is allowed, or you're afraid that getting angry could make your situation worse.
You never lie. But it's not because you value honesty. You just don't know how to lie in a way that will be believed.
You always go out of your way to do nice things for people. But it's not because you're a genuinely nice person. You just don't know how to socialize and you hope that doing nice things will cause people to like you.
Adults who see this assume you're a "good kid". They assume their job of teaching you or raising you will be easy. Then, when you get tired of being outcasted and taken advantage of, you stop living up to the expectations. You start lying. You start using drugs. You start getting angry. You stop doing nice things for people. Adults who saw you as a "good kid" think you did a complete 180. They tell you to "be yourself" and go back to how you were before, even though you were not even close to being yourself.
Also, because you're labeled as "nice" when you're seeking approval, you learn that that's what being nice means. When you see others getting angry or standing up for themselves (even if there's a good reason for it), you assume that they're not nice people, because that's literally what you've been taught.

My coworker asked me a question about Queer culture the other day and it was a really good question but I couldn’t think of a polite way to tell them that they didn’t have the foundational knowledge required to support full comprehension of the answer

what annoys me about explaining evolution to people who don’t think it’s real is that everyone’s idea of how it works seems to be from this

>First, we’ve discovered that about a quarter of all the internet connection in or out of the house were ad related. In a few hours, that’s about 10,000 out of 40,000 processed.
>We also discovered that every link on Twitter was blocked. This was solved by whitelisting the https://t.co domain.
>Once out browsing the Web, everything is loading pretty much instantly. It turns out most of that Page Loading malarkey we’ve been accustomed to is related to sites running auctions to sell Ad space to show you before the page loads. All gone now.
>We then found that the Samsung TV (which I really like) is very fond of yapping all about itself to Samsung HQ. All stopped now. No sign of any breakages in its function, so I’m happy enough with that.
>The primary source of distress came from the habitual Lemmings player in the house, who found they could no longer watch ads to build up their in-app gold. A workaround is being considered for this.
>The next ambition is to advance the Ad blocking so that it seamlessly removed YouTube Ads. This is the subject of ongoing research, and tinkering continues. All in all, a very successful experiment.
>Certainly this exceeds my equivalent childhood project of disassembling and assembling our rotary dial telephone. A project whose only utility was finding out how to make the phone ring when nobody was calling.
Tumblr media
>Update: All4 on the telly appears not to have any ads any more. Goodbye Arnold Clarke!
Tumblr media
>Lemmings problem now solved.
>Can confirm, after small tests, that RTÉ Player ads are now gone and the player on the phone is now just delivering swift, ad free streams at first click.
>Some queries along the lines of “Are you not stealing the internet?” Firstly, this is my network, so I may set it up as I please (or, you know, my son can do it and I can give him a stupid thumbs up in response). But there is a wider question, based on the ads=internet model.
>I’m afraid I passed the You Wouldn’t Download A Car point back when I first installed ad-blocking plug-ins on a browser. But consider my chatty TV. Individual consumer choice is not the method of addressing pervasive commercial surveillance.
>Should I feel morally obliged not to mute the TV when the ads come on? No, this is a standing tension- a clash of interests. But I think my interest in my family not being under intrusive or covert surveillance at home is superior to the ad company’s wish to profile them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>Aside: 24 hours of Pi Hole stats suggests that Samsung TVs are very chatty. 14,170 chats a day.
>YouTube blocking seems difficult, as the ads usually come from the same domain as the videos. Haven’t tried it, but all of the content can also be delivered from a no-cookies version of the YouTube domain, which doesn’t have the ads. I have asked my son to poke at that idea.

Hey everyone, remember that being sick or healing from injuries is a hard time for your body. You have to eat a lot and lay still and be kind to yourself! [large neon sign that says HYPOCRITE descends from the ceiling and points at me] Hey what the heck what's this who put that there
